KUALA Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has issued eight compounds to road excavation contractors for violating the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974 (Act 133).
In a social media post, it said that these contractors were carrying out work in Cheras, Bandar Tun Razak, Lembah Pantai, Segambut and Bukit Bintang.
'Some of the offences are absence of road blinker lights and traffic controllers, causing obstruction on public roads as well as piling up road excavation waste in a public space,' it said.
According to DBKL, the operation was conducted with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB).
They inspected six contractors conducting road repairs across different locations in the city.
'Permit approvals, work procedures and other aspects were inspected to ensure the safety of workers, road users and the public as well as smooth traffic flow,' said DBKL.
It added that CIDB also issued two notices to contractors who did not comply with the notice of information submission for approval to commence on-site construction works.
Earlier, City Hall had also issued 35 compounds to traders who violated Act 133 around Lorong Haji Taib and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
DBKL said these traders had placed their goods in public spaces without approval, littered public areas and blocked drains with waste, affecting water flow.
It added that the compounds were issued during its anti-litter enforcement operation.
'Besides taking action around Kuala Lumpur periodically, the operation also aims to instil a sense of responsibility among traders to always maintain cleanliness around their business premises.
'A clean environment can help portray a good image to visitors.
'At the same time, DBKL has also taken action and issued compounds to traders who are still causing obstruction on walkways in front of and behind their premises,' it added.

US stock futures pause after record S&P 500, Nasdaq run

All three major indexes were on track to end the week on a positive note as recent trade deals helped propel markets to new highs. (AP pic) NEW YORK : Wall Street futures held steady today as investors took a breather following record closes for the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq in the previous session and awaited clarity on trade negotiations ahead of next week's tariff deadline. At 5.41am, Dow E-minis rose 61 points, or 0.14%, S&P 500 E-minis were up 5.75 points, or 0.09%, and Nasdaq 100 E-minis were down 1.75 points, or 0.01%. The blue-chip Dow fell 0.7% in yesterday's session, but remained close to its all-time high, last hit in December. All three major indexes were on track to end the week on a positive note as recent trade deals between the US and its trading partners, including Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines, helped propel markets to new highs. An agreement with the EU was in the pipeline, while talks with South Korea were underway as next week's Aug 1 deadline for many countries looms, with investors hoping that steep US import levies could be averted. The recent climb to a series of record highs was also aided by upbeat second quarter (Q2) earnings. Of the 152 companies in the S&P 500 that reported earnings as of yesterday, 80.3% reported above analyst expectations, according to data compiled by LSEG. However, there were a few setbacks this week from heavyweights such as Tesla, with CEO Elon Musk warning of rough quarters ahead in the wake of shrinking US government subsidies for EVs. Intel dropped 6% in premarket trading on Friday after the chipmaker forecast steeper third-quarter losses than Wall Street had estimated and announced plans to slash jobs. Next week will feature the US Federal Reserve's (Fed) monetary policy meeting, with broader market bets pointing to a 'hold' verdict by policymakers as they continue to assess the impact of tariffs on inflation. US President Donald Trump – a staunch critic of Fed chair Jerome Powell – made a rare presidential visit to the central bank's headquarters yesterday, where he criticised its US$2.5-billion renovation project. This marked another escalation in Trump's efforts to pressure Powell into cutting interest rates. The president has often mused in the past about firing the top policymaker and replacing him with someone more willing to cut borrowing costs. According to the CME FedWatch tool, traders are pricing in a 58.6% chance of a reduction in September. Among other stocks, Newmont added 2% after the gold miner surpassed Wall Street expectations for Q2 profit. Meanwhile, Paramount Global rose 2% after US regulators approved its US$8.4 billion merger with Skydance Media.

Kg Sungai Baru redevelopment starts next year, says FT minister

Kampung Sungai Baru's redevelopment was first initiated in 2016, but has been stalled largely due to legal issues, compensation disputes and disagreements among its residents. PETALING JAYA : The long-delayed redevelopment of Kampung Sungai Baru is now expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026, says federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa. In a written parliamentary reply, she said the project's layout and building plans have been approved, and the developer is currently securing other technical clearances from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and relevant agencies. 'The project is expected to be launched soon, with construction set to begin in the first quarter of 2026,' she said in response to Azman Nasrudin (PN-Padang Serai), who asked for details about the redevelopment. The new timeline marks a delay from a commitment made by Zaliha in 2024, when she told Parliament that construction would begin in the first quarter of 2025. Kampung Sungai Baru's redevelopment was first initiated in 2016, but has been stalled largely due to legal issues, compensation disputes and disagreements among its residents. Zaliha also said that the land acquisition application under the Land Acquisition Act 1960 was submitted by the developer in October 2020 and subsequently approved by the federal territories land working committee. Gazettement of the acquisition, involving 110 properties, including 37 terrace lots, 72 flats, and a Tenaga Nasional Berhad substation, was carried out in June 2021 under Sections 4 and 8 of the Act, for residential and commercial use.

Five compounds issued to businesses in Klang

Tables and chairs obstructing a pedestrian walkway in front of a restaurant at Jalan Bendahara in Klang. Five compounds were issued by Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) to businesses at Jalan Bendahara off Jalan Sungai Jati yesterday. MBDK Corporate Communications Department director Norfiza Mahfiz said three were for cleanliness (RM1,000 each) and two (RM250 each) for using back lanes as a kitchen as well as placing tables and chairs on the five-foot way. She said MBDK was acting on complaints from several residents associations and Rukun Tetangga on placement of furniture on walkways hindering pedestrians. 'Complaints were also received from neighbouring businesses,' she said. 'Most of the complaints are about restaurants 'reserving' council parking bays in front and near their premises. 'These business operators also obstruct the five-foot way,' she added. An optical shop owner, who did not want to be named, said that apart from tables and chairs, restaurant operators also placed gas tanks on the road and used the back lanes for cooking and washing. MBDK enforcement personnel checking the back lane where a restaurant has extended its kitchen. Norfiza said 95 operations had been carried out from January to July 22 where 161 eateries were inspected and 155 compounds issued for obstruction of pedestrian walkways and using the back lanes as a kitchen. Among the areas MBDK had carried out operations were Bandar Bukit Tinggi, Pusat Bandar Klang and Bandar Bukit Raja, she said. She added that enforcement was carried out under the Food Establishment Licensing By-Laws (MPK) 2007 which covered aspects such as cleanliness, physical structure of the premises, waste disposal and fire safety. 'MBDK also took action under Section 46(1)(d) of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974, which prohibits obstruction in streets or public spaces,' said Norfiza.
