Rihanna's dad dies aged 70

Yahoo31-05-2025
Rihanna's dad has died at the age of 70. The 37-year-old pop star - whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty - has yet to address her loss publicly, but Starcom Network reported on Saturday (31.05.25) that her father, Ronald Fenty had passed away following a "brief illness". The outlet reported that "family members have gathered in California, where Fenty passed away in the early hours of this morning", but gave no further detail. PEOPLE magazine later confirmed the news, although his official cause and date of death have yet to be revealed. The news comes just days after TMZ reported that Rihanna's brother Rajad Fenty had been seen at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and claimed that the 'Umbrella' hitmaker was also with him. Ronald is also survived by Rihanna's mother Monica Braithwaite - whom he split from in 2002 - as well as daughters Kandi, 54, and Samantha Fenty, 44, as well as his 35-year-old son Rorrey Fenty. Prior to their divorce, Ronald and Monica had raised their children in Bridgetown, Barbados where he worked as a warehouse supervisor and she was an accountant. Rihanna had endured a rocky relationship with her father when she was growing up. and was at the centre of a public battle with him when he spoke to the press after she was assaulted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown in 2009. However, the in the years that followed, she noted that she had "repaired" her relationship with her father and had to learn to "come to terms" with things that had gone in in the past. She told Oprah Winfrey: "He taught me everything, and as awful as he was to my mom, at times, it didn't compare to how great he was as a father. "And I had to come to terms with that, and I was able to close that gap with him." Despite this, in 2019, Rihanna sued her dad for allegedly exploiting her name for financial gain but elected to dismiss the complaint just weeks before it went to court. The 'Diamonds' songstress is currently expecting her third child with rapper A$AP Rocky - with whom she already has Rza, two, as well as 22-month-old Riot - and Ron previously shared how much he approved of his daughter's relationship. Ron told PageSix in 2023: "He's such a cool guy. Very respectable. He's taking to fatherhood very well."

Dwayne Johnson finally hugs Jelly Roll years after his music helped him through 'hard' time

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has thanked Jelly Roll for helping him through a "very hard" time. The WWE legend turned Hollywood megastar has shared a video of the moment he finally met and hugged the Only hitmaker, whose song "moved" him around 2017 when he was "struggling" with his mental health. Alongside a video of the pair hugging and saying they loved each other, The Rock wrote: "A brotherly hug almost 10 years in the making... "Several years ago (roughly 2017) I was going through a very hard thing at the time, I was struggling. "My mental wellness turned into my mental hellness. Many of you know the drill, you put on 'the face,' show up to work, smile and get through it. "Perhaps not the healthiest thing to do, but it's what I was used to doing at the time. "Then a song came on through my headphones one morning on a random shuffle playlist. 'Only' from Jelly Roll. The lyrics rocked me. Hard core." In the emotional song, Jelly - who is also a huge WWE fan - sings: "What if the darkness inside of me has finally taken my soul?/What if the angels in heaven were sent to take me home? "Would they fight through the demons that I have in my life?/Lord, I'm believing eventually see the light." The Fast and Furious actor recalled how he was moved "so much" that he got in touch with the singer at the time, and shared how "this song of yours is helping me through some stuff I'm dealing with". and that he "just called to say thank you". He continued: "Our bond was born." When the pair finally met in person recently, Dwayne gave Jelly a gift which he admitted might seem "insignificant to the world", but would mean a lot to Jelly. He gave the singer an old postcard of the former Alamo Plaza motel in South Nashville, where Jelly is from. Dwayne explained: "When I was 15yrs I was forced (family was evicted) to leave Hawaii and make it to Nashville to live with my dad. "That didn't work out so I wound up living with a stranger in this little spot on Murfreesboro Road that has since been torn down and no longer there. "Downtown Bruno was that stranger's name and to this day, he's one of my best and most special friends. Just like Jelly. A very special friend." In the Instagram video, Jelly admitted that the postcard - which was signed by The Rock - "is real old school Nashville history". Dwayne added in the caption: "Every once in a while we all get sliced up by life, but it's amazing to see what kind of blessings and people that God and the universe will put in our lives to help us heal through our pain."

Stockton BBQ owner battles cancer, receives community support

STOCKTON — Fat City Brew & BBQ is regarded as one of the gems of the historic Miracle Mile in Stockton. Don King is the mastermind behind this popular place, and on any given day, you can find him behind the grill. But lately, King has had to take more pauses than usual as he undergoes cancer treatment. "I've only known for about four weeks now. My life changed in a couple of days," he said. In May, he was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma. "[I] have vision in [one] eye, but some of the cancer is in my head, and it messes with the muscles in my eye. That's why I have to wear a patch. I lost my voice," he said. But King says the outpouring of support kept him going. "It knocks down the nay-sayers of Stockton. It shows there are great things in Stockton. There is a community. There are great things in Stockton, a great support system. I'm living proof of it," said King. "Fat City is here because of them." People coming in and asking how they can help has been the sweetest sauce in his restaurant, King said. "People always want to do something, and I'm grateful," he said. "The biggest thing they can do is come out to Fat City. If they want to support my family, my workers, come into Fat City." On a wall inside the restaurant sits a sign from almost every local shop nearby. King said he's grateful for his employees who have stuck with him every step of the way. "I'm thankful for everybody. For all our patrons, our employees have done an excellent job keeping this place rolling, putting out great food. Exactly what I'd expect," he said. For King, personally, it's his superhero wife that makes it all possible. "Not only is she here, but she's taking care of me at home. Plus, we have two young kids. We have a 15-year-old and an 11-year-old. They're in sports and all kinds of things. I don't know how this woman does it. I'm so grateful," he said. If you'd like to support King and his restaurant, Fat City Brew & BBQ is open Tuesday through Sunday, starting every day at 11 in the morning. "I can see how people quit, but I can also see how people get stronger, and that's what I chose: [to be] stronger," he said.
