Learning through experience: Shreejita provides hands-on education for children in rural Odisha

'For example, in the mock bank and shop, children learn to interact with one another in English or Odia, learn to write their names, do basic calculations, plan expenditures, etc. There are no school books involved here but it is all about strengthening their foundational skills which will make it easier for them to integrate the knowledge into their school curriculum,' said Shreejita, who has done her Masters in Chemistry and BEd. She worked in the Azim Premji Foundation for two years from 2017 and was a teaching fellow before deciding to come to Sundargarh to teach students of remote villages for Koru Foundation.
That is not all. Shreejita encourages the children to think, write and publish their stories, comics, poems in a monthly wall magazine - Rangeen Patrika. The name of the magazine has been collectively decided by the children. 'The children, who have a lot of indigenous knowledge, are encouraged to think about their own day-to-day experiences and pen them down in the form of stories, poems and comics for the magazine,' she said.
But the learning is not confined to the four walls of the community learning centre. Forests around the village also become their classrooms. 'For a long time, many of the children did not wish to come to the centre after a long day at school. Girls, particularly, because they had to also help their mothers with the household chores. Most of them visit the forest to bring forest products,' Shreejita said. This is when she decided to join them in the forests to teach them about plant parts, different types of plants, the forest ecosystem and the environment in general.
Shreejita has also created a rubric following the learning outcomes recommended by NCERT, to assess children's progress every six months. 'Every session, there has been a considerable improvement in the learning outcome of these children which is visible in our assessment and their school results. It is a continuous process,' said Shreejita, who is now planning to approach the local government school authorities to implement the practical learning model for better understanding of children.

Kolhapur: This school, located along the Maharashtra-Karnataka border in Kolhapur rural, is helping its students rise above local language politics and get a head start in global competition. All students here are taught English and Marathi. However, those interested can also take up foreign languages, including Japanese, German and Russian in higher classes. Located barely 18km from Kolhapur city, students of this school get compulsory Hindi lessons from Std V. Kannada is also an option for students of Std V and above. The founder of the school has trained his teachers in foreign languages at the foreign language department of Shivaji University, Kolhapur. For the past four years, the students of the school have been learning to read, write and speak these foreign languages. They also appear for written and oral examinations conducted by the school to monitor their progress. Shirish Desai, founder of Anant Vidyamandir, Pattankodoli, said the aim is to help students learn multiple languages and make them more eligible for higher studies and jobs. Therefore, this language is also taught. Prerna Khot, a student in Std VIII, has opted for German, hoping to work in Germany one day. "Initially, it was tough to remember the pronunciations of the alphabet, numbers, pronouns, and proverbs. However, like any other language, I worked on the challenge by practising and speaking with my friends and family. I made it a habit to say 'good morning' and other simple phrases in German. Now I am attempting to frame full sentences. Besides, I take the help of the internet to learn the language. Learning a foreign language has helped me improve my memorising capability too." She was taught simple verbs such as drink, eat, go, stay, and pronouns such as I, they, we, him, and she. "I learned numbers 1-20 in German. Now I am learning higher numbers, which are very similar to numbers in Marathi. This was a surprise. For example, when we say 21 in Marathi, we say 1 (ek) 20 (vees); similarly, in German, we say 'ein-und-zwanzig' (eins is 1 and 20 is zwanzig)," said Prerna. Prerna also plans to learn Japanese in Std IX. "While applying for jobs in multinational companies, the resumes of our students, who know multiple languages, will stand out. It will help them secure employment more easily. Their resumes will have more weight than the resumes of applicants who know only two to three languages. The internet has brought the world together, but knowledge of international languages, besides English, is very important, and my students have easy access to that knowledge," said Desai. The school founder said choosing to learn a foreign language is optional and not mandatory. "We have developed elementary books for each of these languages. The tests are based on those books. The orals are conducted, and the students who show keen interest are rewarded every year," added Desai. Currently, 58 students are enrolled for German classes, 49 for Russian, 30 for Japanese and 50 for Kannada. Twenty-five students are also learning the Modi script.

Ahmedabad: English-medium sections in schools run by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) have been registering a sustained increase in new primary school admissions with a growing number of parents now preferring English, the most widely spoken language in the world, as a medium of instruction. AMC data revealed that in 2024, 3,953 new students enrolled in English-medium sections in its primary schools, doubling from 1,967 students in 2023. Of these, 1,629 students joined pre-primary schools, while 2,246 were admitted to Class 1, reflecting a growing desire among parents to begin their child's English education early. Dr Lagdhir Desai, municipal school board administrative officer, says the demand has increased so rapidly that eight of the 55 English medium sections are now running at full capacity, with more than 400 students on the admission waitlist. "Parents are becoming increasingly aware of the fact that English opens doors to higher studies and jobs," Desai said. "This demand wasn't present a decade ago."
