Pakistani PM speaks to Saudi, Qatari envoys as Iran fires missiles at US air base in Qatar
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed concern over Iran's missile attack on a United States (US) military base in Qatar and called for efforts to restore peace in the region, Sharif's office said on Monday, following his telephonic talk with Qatari and Saudi envoys to Islamabad.
Iran launched missile attacks Monday on US military bases in Qatar and Iraq in retaliation for the American bombing of its nuclear sites, state media said, amid escalating tensions in the volatile region.
Qatar said it had 'successfully intercepted' missiles targeting the US base, and added it reserved the right to respond in accordance with international law. The US confirmed its air base was targeted by missile attack from Iran and said no casualties were reported.
Shortly after the attack, Sharif spoke with Qatar's Ambassador to Islamabad Ali Mubarak Ali Essa Al-Khater and expressed solidarity with the Qatari government and people. He then spoke with Saudi Arabia's Ambassador Nawaf bin Said-Al Malki.
'The Prime Minister urged that all efforts must be made to de-escalate tensions and restore peace in the region,' Sharif's office said, following his conversation with the Saudi envoy.
'He said Pakistan would continue to work closely with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to intensify peace efforts.'
The Qatari and Saudi envoys thanked the prime minister for expressing solidarity and immediately reaching out to them after the development that could imperil peace and stability in the region, according to Sharif's office.
Qatar earlier said it condemned the Iranian missile attack, calling it a 'flagrant violation' of its sovereignty.
'We express the State of Qatar's strong condemnation of the attack on Al-Udeid Air Base by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, and consider it a flagrant violation of the State of Qatar's sovereignty and airspace, as well as of international law,' foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari said in a statement.
The Al-Udeid air base is home to the US Combined Air Operations Center (CAOC), which provides command and control of air power across the region as well as the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing, the largest expeditionary wing in the world.
Iran's retaliation came a day after the US launched a surprise attack Sunday morning on three of Iran's nuclear sites, joining Israel in the biggest Western military action against the Islamic Republic since its 1979 revolution.
Just before the explosions, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian wrote on the social platform X: 'We neither initiated the war nor seeking it. But we will not leave invasion to the great Iran without answer.'

In Gaza, where Israel has waged war since Hamas's October 2023 attack, Bennett said the military has displayed 'exceptional' performance but 'the political management of the country' was 'a catastrophe, a disaster.' Criticizing the Netanyahu government's 'inability to decide,' the former prime minister called for an immediate 'comprehensive' agreement that would see all remaining hostages freed from Gaza. 'Leave the task of eliminating Hamas to a future government,' said Bennett, who also evaded several questions about whether he intends to run for office.

Trump Slams Israel's Prosecutors over Netanyahu Corruption Trial
US President Donald Trump on Saturday lashed out at prosecutors in Israel over the corruption trial that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has faced, saying Washington, having given billions of dollars worth of aid to Israel, was not going to "stand for this". Netanyahu was indicted in 2019 in Israel on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust - all of which he denies. The trial began in 2020 and involves three criminal cases, Reuters said. On Friday, the court rejected a request by Netanyahu's lawyers to delay his testimony for the next two weeks because of diplomatic and security matters following the 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran this month. He is due to take the stand on Monday for cross examination. "It is INSANITY doing what the out-of-control prosecutors are doing to Bibi Netanyahu," Trump said in a Truth Social post, adding that the judicial process was going to interfere with Netanyahu's ability to conduct talks with the Palestinian group Hamas, and Iran. Trump's second post over the course of a few days defending Netanyahu and calling for the cancellation of the trial went a step further to tie Israel's legal action to US aid. Netanyahu "right now" was in the process of negotiating a deal with Hamas, Trump said, without giving further details. On Friday, the Republican president told reporters that he believes a ceasefire is close. Hamas has said it is willing to free remaining hostages in Gaza under any deal to end the war, while Israel says it can only end it if Hamas is disarmed and dismantled. Iran Investigates Launch of Israeli Drones from Azerbaijan
Iran has called on Azerbaijan to conduct a thorough investigation into whether Israeli drones entered Iranian airspace from Azerbaijan during the recent hostilities between both countries, Iran's Ambassador to Armenia, Mehdi Sobhani said on Saturday. During a press conference at the National Press Club in Yerevan, Sobhani said if it is confirmed that Israel used Azerbaijani soil to launch attacks against Iran during the recent war, then Tehran will consider this a serious violation and expects Baku to provide an official and transparent response. 'We do not confirm some of the information and reports published by certain sources in this regard... Once all aspects of the situation become clear, we will decide on our response,' the ambassador said according to Fars news agency, which is affiliated to the Revolutionary Guards. 'We have not permitted Iranian territory to be used for such purposes. If Azerbaijan has granted such permission, it must provide an explanation in accordance with international law,' the ambassador added. Sobhani said Iranian intelligence has received information indicating that a small number of Israeli drones crossed into Iran from neighboring countries. As a result, he said, Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian raised the issue in a phone call with his Azerbaijani counterparty, Ilham Aliyev, requesting a serious investigation. Sobhani indicated that Azerbaijan has assured Iran that it would not allow its territory to be used against it. However, he emphasized that Tehran needs to receive accurate information before responding. Two weeks ago, Israel launched a preemptive attack on Iran and the two sides have since exchanged strikes, with growing civilian casualties on both sides. Early last Sunday, the United States bombed three Iranian nuclear sites after more than a week of Israeli strikes on Tehran's military and nuclear facilities. In retaliation, Iran launched a missile attack on the Al-Udeid air base in Qatar. Last April, Pezeshkian visited Azerbaijan and agreed with Aliyev on a road map to strategic and comprehensive cooperation. Relations between the two countries have been tense for a long time because Azerbaijan in March 2023 opened an embassy in Israel. Azerbaijan also maintains close ties to Israel, which Tehran views as its top regional enemy. Iran has repeatedly opposed improving relations between Azerbaijan and Israel. In February 2023, Azerbaijan arrested seven people in the capital Baku and other regions in an operation against an Iranian "spy network.' As part of their campaign, Azerbaijani forces also raided the offices of pro-Iranian news outlets SalamNews and InterAz. This came after a gunman with a Kalashnikov rifle barged inside the Azerbaijani Embassy premises in Tehran and opened fire, killing the embassy's security chief and injuring two guards.
