"He opened the drawer and showed his nine rings, 'Choose one'" - Goran Dragic on the first time he met the legendary Pat Riley
When Goran Dragic packed his bags for South Beach in 2015, he wasn't just joining a new team — he was stepping into one of the most distinct, demanding cultures in the NBA. And unlike some of the players who find it way too challenging, Dragic was more than okay with the way things functioned with the Miami Heat.
And somewhere above the court and beyond the locker room was the man who built it all: the Godfather himself, Pat Riley. Even well into his seventies (now 80), Riles remained a towering presence in every major decision the franchise made. But for Dragic, it wasn't just Riley's legacy that struck him; it was the moment the countless rings came out.
"First meeting with him (Riley), I remember I came to his office, and he was like, 'Goran, we are happy to have you, welcome to the team. Now it's time to go to war, you know what we play for?' I said, 'Yes, of course, the championship.'And he opened the drawer and showed all nine rings," Dragic recalled in an exclusive interview with Basketball Network.
It wasn't just a random flex from Riley, it was a statement about what was the mission ahead of them.
"He's like, choose one, I'm like, 'What?!' At that time, I just picked one ring, he was like, 'Okay, we are going to get you one.' You know, it never happened, but if I'm honest, I've spent the best seven years in Miami…" the lefty point guard added.
What made Dragic a perfect fit for the Heat wasn't just the skill — it was the edge. Everything that doesn't show on the box score. He wasn't a volume shooter or a flashy name, but he brought it every single night. That made him one of Erik Spoelstra's favorite soldiers.
He averaged double digits in every full season with the franchise, earned an All-Star nod in 2018, and led with the kind of effort Riley's culture demands. If you weren't willing to sacrifice something, your ego, your body, you didn't last long in Miami. Dragic lasted seven years. And for all the sacrifices the Slovenian native has made there, it was his best seven campaigns.
More than just numbers, he became one of the most respected voices in that locker room. And while he never got that ring Riley told him to pick out, he did help take the franchise to the brink of another. In 2020, inside the strangest environment the NBA has ever seen, Dragic turned back the clock and gave the Heat everything he had. Alongside Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, he was a key piece in Miami's stunning run to the Finals in the Orlando bubble. But when the moment came to finish the story, his body didn't cooperate — a torn plantar fascia in Game 1 all but ended his Finals before they began.
Miami fell to the Lakers in six, and that elusive ring never found its way to Dragic's finger. Still, what he gave the Heat can't be measured by jewelry.
The man they call "The Dragon" never got to add a ring to Riley's drawer — but he became part of the Heat family forever. This story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Jul 8, 2025, where it first appeared.

Real Madrid's Club World Cup semi-final preparation disrupted by flight delay
Real Madrid failed to attend their pre-match media activities ahead of Wednesday's Club World Cup semi-final against Paris St. Germain following a flight delay caused by storms in the Miami and New York areas. Coach Xabi Alonso's press conference and the mixed zone interview session with players Thibaut Courtois, Federico Valverde and Jacobo Ramón were initially scheduled for 7:30 and 7:45 pm ET respectively, at MetLife Stadium. Advertisement However, Madrid's scheduled 4 pm flight from the team's Miami base was delayed an hour by adverse weather conditions. FIFA initially delayed Alonso's press conference to 8:15 pm and made plans to scrap the mixed zone. The Athletic learned from a Madrid source at 7:28 pm that the team was still in mid-air and then, six minutes later, FIFA announced the cancellation of all Madrid press activities for the day. Madrid touched down safely at 8:52 pm. 'He's not coming?! Really?!' PSG coach Luis Enrique said, when informed by The Athletic that Alonso wouldn't do his press conference. 'It doesn't change anything to me, I didn't know about the flight, I hope they can arrive normally.' Madrid had initially planned to stay in New York ahead of the semifinal after defeating Borussia Dortmund in last weekend's quarterfinal. However, the club changed plans during the tournament. After investing heavily in their base in Palm Beach, Fla., the decision was made to return there while preparing for the final stages of the competition. The required attendance of media activities is covered under the Club World Cup's list of regulations, with section 4.3 (e) stating the clubs are responsible for 'attending all media conferences and other media activities organised by FIFA in accordance with the FIFA Media and Marketing Regulations, as well as with any other FIFA circular letters, guidelines, directives and/or decisions.' Section 4.5 adds: 'All participating clubs undertake to ensure that their players and officials attend and participate in all official activities and events including, without limitation, any Team Arrival Meeting, Match Coordination Meeting, press conference and other media and marketing activities in accordance with the FIFA Media and Marketing Regulations.' FIFA had not responded to a request for comment from The Athletic by the time of publication, but a Real Madrid spokesperson said the club was not anticipating any fine or discipline for missing out on its obligation.

Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton's honest assessment of first game back from injury
The post Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton's honest assessment of first game back from injury appeared first on ClutchPoints. Despite losing their fourth game in a row, this time 1-0 to the visiting Los Angeles Angels, the New York Yankees' focus is already on Tuesday's tilt. Veteran designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton made his season debut after rehabbing injuries in both elbows. Stanton went 2 for 4 with a strikeout in the loss. He discussed the performance candidly with the media postgame, including with SNY's Yankees Videos account on X, formerly Twitter. ''It's good to be out there. Thought I saw the ball pretty well, besides one at-bat. So just working on that, making sure my timing's geared up. Get rolling' – Giancarlo Stanton on his 2025 season debut,' posted the account. Advertisement It was a solid debut for Stanton, and a performance the Yankees will definitely need more of moving forward. At the moment, the team's four-game slide is the worst of the season. The Angels are in town for three more games before back-to-back series against the Baltimore Orioles at home and Cincinnati Reds on the road. New York has played seven games in seven days, and they have nine more games over the next nine days. Can the Bronx Bombers correct course during this pivotal yet long stretch? Can Giancarlo Stanton help Yankees out of current skid? Mandatory Credit: Eric Canha-Imagn Images Stanton is likely replacing Ben Rice in the lineup the majority of the time. The second year first baseman did an admirable job filling in for Stanton, as he solidified his spot on the roster for the foreseeable future. Furthermore, getting Stanton back deepens the Bombers' lineup for hopefully the foreseeable future. During this stretch, having that depth will be key. Advertisement With veteran Paul Goldschmidt also having a resurgent season in pinstripes, at bats might be a bit scarce at times. Team captain Aaron Judge and the other outfielders usually slot in at DH on their days off if there's a matchup that manager Aaron Boone prefers. Monday's performance is hopefully just the start of another powerful season in the Bronx for Stanton. If that is the case, then don't be surprised to see the Yankees in the thick of yet another postseason race later this season.
