SIT likely to close sexual harassment case against Jayasurya, Balachandra Menon
According to police sources, witness accounts and records are largely inconsistent with the complainant's version, with most testimonies reportedly going against her claims.
The complaint, raised in the wake of the Hema Committee report, alleged that Jayasurya misbehaved with the actress during the shooting of the 2008 film "De Ingottu Nokkiye" near a restroom in the Secretariat complex. Balachandra Menon was accused of summoning her to a hotel room in Vanchiyoor and sexually assaulting her.
In Jayasurya's case, the govt records indicate that the shooting did take place within the Secretariat premises on the day mentioned, but no official permission was granted to enter office buildings or rooms. The restroom the actress referred to in her complaint was reportedly demolished and converted into the forest minister's office, which made it difficult for even the complainant to identify the spot precisely.
As there were no eyewitnesses or circumstantial evidence to support the charges, the only elements favouring the complaint were the actress's confidential statement and the fact that both she and Jayasurya acted in the same film.
As for the allegation against Menon, sources say police were able to confirm his stay at the said hotel, but no material evidence was found to establish that the actress ever visited him there.
Due to the passage of time, no CCTV footage or mobile tower location data was available to verify the claim.
The case reportedly suffered another setback after a junior artist, initially cited by the complainant as a witness to the alleged misconduct, changed her statement and denied any knowledge of the incident.
It is learnt that the special investigation team will soon take a call on whether to formally clear both actors of the charges, based on the available findings

Kerala: The husband and the in-laws of the 32-year-old Kerala woman, who was found dead with her toddler in the United Arab Emirates's Sharjah, have been booked for a dowry harassment case. The victim, Vipanchika Maniyan-- a native of Kollam district in Kerala-- allegedly died by suicide at her Sharjah apartment on July 8. Her one-year-old daughter was also found dead under tragic circumstances. Later forensic report confirmed the child died from "airway obstruction, possibly by a pillow", raising suspicions that the child may have been killed before the mother took the extreme step. Per a Khaleej Times report, a handwritten note in Malayalam -- believed to have been written by the dead woman-- was found in the house that contains details suggesting emotional distress and allegations of abuse. Now, the victim's family has accused her husband, Nidheesh Valiyaveettil, and his family of physical and mental harassment of both victims. In her complaint to Kerala police, the victim's mother, Shyamala, alleged that Maniyan faced persistent dowry harassment and racial abuse from her husband and in-laws. Per reports, Maniyan and Valiyaveettil got married in 2020 and moved to Sharjah. The victim's mother claimed that following her marriage, Maniyan was regularly harassed over dowry, humiliated over her appearance, and isolated by her husband and in-laws. The complaint alleged that the victim's hair was cut to make her look "less attractive", as she was fair-skinned while her husband and his family were dark-skinned. Shyamala also alleged that her granddaughter, Vybhavi, who was just one year old, was physically harmed after Maniyan opposed Valiyaveettil's "relationships" with other women. Due to marital dispute, Maniyan had been living separately in an apartment in Al Nahda, Sharjah, with her daughter for the past few months. But Valiyaveettil had sent her a legal notice for divorce. Unable to bear the ongoing harassment, Maniyan took the extreme step on July 8, according to the complaint. The victim's mother accused Valiyaveettil, his sister Neethu Beni, and their father of abetment to suicide. Police said a case has been registered under Sections 85 (cruelty by a husband or his relatives towards a woman) and 108 (Abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.

VIJAYAWADA: Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha on Monday said Andhra Pradesh has made major progress in curbing ganja and drug abuse under Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's leadership, transforming agency areas once known for illicit cultivation into hubs of globally recognised coffee. Addressing the media at the Secretariat in Velagapudi on Monday, Anitha credited the Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE) task force and a coordinated government approach for the turnaround. 'The crackdown began soon after Naidu assumed office. A sub-committee was formed with officials from the Education, Health, Excise, Tribal Welfare, and Home departments to ensure a multi-sectoral approach,' she said. She noted that EAGLE units were established in Amaravati, Rajamahendravaram, and Visakhapatnam, with support cells in all 26 districts. Over the past year, authorities registered 831 cases, arrested 2,114 individuals, and seized 23,770 kg of ganja, 27 litres of hashish oil, and 293 vehicles. Financial probes also led to the seizure of assets worth `7.75 crore from seven major accused. 'Once criticised by neighbouring states as a drug hub, Andhra Pradesh has reversed that image. Areas like Araku and Paderu are now known worldwide for their premium coffee,' she added, highlighting the promotion of Araku Coffee even in the Indian Parliament. EAGLE chief Ake Ravi Krishna presented the force's progress and upcoming initiatives. He said future plans include establishing a dedicated data centre, adopting modern technology to dismantle drug networks, tracking financial trails of offenders, and strictly enforcing the PITNDPS Act.

Kerala HC sets aside govt order denying compassionate appointment
Kochi: High court has set aside a govt order that denied compassionate appointment to a 36-year-old man from Palakkad as a police driver, following the death of his mother, a part-time sweeper in the police department, on the grounds of his alleged criminal antecedents. The bench of Justices A Muhamed Mustaque and Johnson John issued the order in a petition filed by the man challenging the decision of the Kerala Administrative Tribunal, which had upheld the govt's refusal to appoint him. His appointment was rejected due to his involvement in criminal cases and for not disclosing these cases in the verification roll. HC noted that the petitioner belongs to a backward community and has studied only up to SSLC. He was involved in six cases, of which he was sentenced to imprisonment for one day till the rising of the court in one case, and fined in another. In three cases, he was acquitted. The last case, a matrimonial dispute, ended in a compromise. Undo On analysis, HC held that the post of police driver does not involve public interface or exercise of discretion. In that view, the govt should not deny an opportunity for redemption and improvement, especially considering the petitioner's social background. The bench further observed that when a person from a marginalised background is given a chance to enter public service, it becomes a reformative and rehabilitative measure of the state. HC also questioned why clause 19 of the verification roll, which pertains to disclosure of criminal antecedents, was not provided in Malayalam. It observed that it is high time the govt incorporates such changes to ensure that the questionnaire is available in Malayalam as well. In the petitioner's case, HC found that the alleged suppression was not of a material fact. Even if the information had been disclosed, it would not have been a ground to deny public employment. Additionally, HC noted that the petitioner had faced many hurdles in life and had no access to higher education, unlike many from privileged backgrounds. The court remarked that he never thought he would get an opportunity to improve his life until it came in the form of a compassionate appointment after his mother's death. However, the law became a barrier, forcing him to approach HC. Allowing his petition, the court directed the govt to appoint him within a month.
