NSE International Exchange set for first foreign-currency listing

Time of India18 hours ago
India's
NSE International Exchange
is aiming to attract its first
equity listing
in a foreign currency this quarter, a milestone it says will demonstrate a new fundraising avenue for firms.
The
NSE IX
exchange, situated in the financial hub of Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, or
GIFT City
, is initially targeting
unlisted companies
for the debut, chief executive officer V. Balasubramaniam said in an interview. These may be
Indian firms with foreign holdings
or even Silicon Valley or Delaware-based entities, he said, without providing any names.

GIFT City is an initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed at positioning India as a
global financial hub
to rival Dubai or Hong Kong. The zone offers exemptions from certain taxes and regulatory restrictions, making it a more attractive for international capital raising.
A number of Chinese companies have gone ahead with international listings in Hong Kong, and some of them have now become global multinationals, Balasubramaniam said.
'It's the same opportunity that GIFT City is offering to Indian corporates.' There are five to six companies preparing to list, he said.
Live Events
The planned listing will help underscore the growing sophistication of India's
capital markets
and offer companies an alternative to domestic exchanges. A foreign-currency listing in GIFT City may also benefit Indian firms looking to expand globally by reducing currency conversion and hedging costs.
The Securities and Exchange Board of India is working with the International Financial Services Centres Authority — GIFT City's unified regulator — to address outstanding regulatory issues, Balasubramaniam said. Once resolved, this will enable already listed Indian companies to raise capital on the international exchanges, he said.
'An Indian company that is already listed can decide to do a follow-on public offering in GIFT City as a separate dollar float, or it could do an offer for sale,' he said.
Indian companies have previously accessed overseas markets primarily through instruments such as American depository receipts. Firms in the nation raised more than $20 billion via initial share sales last year.
The absence of securities transaction and capital gains taxes in GIFT City is another major incentive for foreign investors, Balasubramaniam said.

Congress targets govt, SEBI on Jane Street ‘market manipulation'

The Congress on Tuesday hit out at the SEBI and the government for not taking timely action against US algorithm trading firm Jane Street for 'stock market manipulation'. Congress head of social media department Supriya Shrinate said Jane Street had in 2024 admitted in a US court it made $1 billion in India in 2023 from the Indian options market by exploiting 'inefficiencies'. 'By 2024, that amount grew to $2.3 billion, which was 11.2% of all the money it made around the world. But SEBI didn't act on this information, it was only in February 2025 that SEBI issued a mild warning, a cautionary letter to Jane Street, warning against its questionable trading patterns. But the firm continued its manipulative trades till as late as May 2025,' Shrinate said. Criticising SEBI, she said its 'report shows that 93% of retail investors lost money in derivatives trading between FY2021 and FY2024'. 'In FY2024 alone, 91.1% of traders lost Rs 52,400 crore,' she said. She said instead of protecting small investors, SEBI turned a blind eye to 'rampant fraudulent activities'.

Donald Trump says India deal soon, flags Brics again

The US and India are close to reaching a trade deal, President Donald Trump said on Monday, as his administration held off on including India among 14 countries that were sent ultimatum letters, threatening new tariffs from August 1. Marco Rubio, US secretary of state, left, and US President Donald Trump during a cabinet meeting at the White House in Washington. (Bloomberg) Officials in New Delhi have said that they are waiting on word from Washington, after trade talks concluded last week with some sticking points appearing to remain unresolved. 'We've made a deal with the United Kingdom, we've made a deal with China, we're close to making a deal with India,' Trump told reporters during a meeting with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Speaking on Tuesday morning, Trump appeared to temper some of the optimism by a separate threat when he said India would face a 10% tariff as a member of the BRICS economic bloc, which he accused of trying to undermine the US dollar. 'They [India] will certainly have to pay 10% if they are in BRICS because BRICS was set up to hurt us, to degenerate our dollar,' Trump told reporters when asked if India would be subject to his announced BRICS tariffs. 'The Dollar is king. We are going to keep it that way. If people want to challenge it, they can. But they will have to pay a big price. I don't think any of them are going to pay that price.' On Monday, the Trump administration unveiled tariff rates for 14 countries - including 25% levies on major allies Japan and South Korea - but notably excluded India from the list despite months of stalled negotiations over sensitive issues including agriculture and automobiles. Of the 14 countries that received ultimatum letters Monday, most are smaller economies facing tariffs ranging from 25% to 40%, with the highest rates targeting Bangladesh (35%), Cambodia (36%), Laos (40%), and Myanmar (40%). India's negotiating team, led by Special Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, returned from Washington last week after intensive discussions with the Office of the US Trade Representative failed to fully resolve key disputes that have persisted since talks began in March. India has consistently refused demands for unfettered access for American agricultural goods, which officials, speaking to HT last week, described as 'a highly sensitive area for New Delhi as it involves the livelihood of millions of subsistence farmers.' The country remains unwilling to allow imports of genetically modified crops like soybean and corn, since GM products are banned domestically. India has also resisted opening its dairy sector, citing both the subsistence-level nature of farming - where millions depend on just one or two cows or buffaloes - and religious sensitivities around US cattle feed containing non-vegetarian products. Despite these sticking points, experts believe the exclusion from Monday's ultimatum letters signals progress in negotiations. 'I think they basically sewed up what is likely to be an agreement in principle but not a legally binding agreement in which the two sides issue a statement highlighting what has been agreed so far,' said Mark Linscott, senior advisor at the Asia Group and former Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asian Affairs. Linscott, who was involved in US-India trade talks during the first Trump administration, predicted any deal would be 'substantial' and 'go further than the other two agreements that have been announced so far with the UK and Vietnam,' including benefits on tariffs, market access, and non-tariff barriers. Last week's negotiations followed frenzied developments on the trade front as the July 9 deadline neared. On July 3, India put the US on 30-day notice at the World Trade Organization before potentially suspending concessions on American imports, following its May challenge over US steel and aluminium tariffs. India argues these tariffs affect $7.6 billion in Indian exports and generate $1.91 billion in duty collections for the US. Commerce minister Piyush Goyal emphasised last week that India 'never negotiates trade deals with a deadline' and that any agreement would be announced only when 'fully finalised, properly concluded and in the national interest.' Speaking last week, Goyal stressed that 'national interest should always be supreme' and India would only pursue deals where 'both sides are benefitted.' Trump extended his original July 9 deadline to August 1. The delay pertains to his April 2 'Liberation Day' tariffs, which imposed a 10% baseline levy globally plus higher country-specific rates that were suspended for 90 days. India had initially faced a combined 26% tariff - the 10% baseline plus an additional 16% reciprocal levy - but officials have been hopeful of some concessions since both nations have been engaged in conversations from before. Bilateral talks were announced in February when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Washington, with both leaders agreeing to negotiate the first tranche of a bilateral trade agreement by September and double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.

8 years on, Madhuban Bapudham rail overbridge may be ready this year

Ghaziabad: In the works since 2017, the 600m-long railway overbridge in Madhuban Bapudham may finally see the light of day by the end of this year. The GDA-mandated project is being executed by two agencies – UP Bridge Corporation and Indian Railways – and has missed several deadlines over fund crisis, delayed clearances, and a lack of consensus between the agencies. GDA official Rudresh Shukla said that the agencies have now assured that the project will be completed soon. "The UP Bridge Corporation, which is developing the approach road on both sides of the rail overbridge, has completed about 80% of the work, while the railway has drawn up a plan for the rail overbridge, which will start shortly," he said. The rail overbridge is planned to be 45m wide and 600m long and will offer a much-needed link between Madhuban Bapudham on one side and Meerut Road and Hapur on the other. Currently, residents of Madhuban Bapudham must take a detour of about 14 km to reach Delhi and Meerut to reach the township. With improved connectivity in the area, GDA's Madhuban Bapudham housing scheme, which is spread over an area of 1,234 acres with 11,680 HIG, MIG, and LIG flats, will find more buyers, officials said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top 7 All-Inclusive Destinations That Accept Credit Card Rewards Liseer Learn More Undo Delays so far have led to a cost escalation of more than 20%. While the railway initially pegged an estimate of Rs 26 crore for the overbridge, since 2017, the cost has gone up to over Rs 34 crore. The Train Vehicle Unit (TUV) model was employed to provide cost estimates, which is measured at a crossing by multiplying the number of trains with the number of road vehicles passing over the level crossing in 24 hours. Its final computation led to the current cost estimates. Costs for the approach road, which the UP Bridge Corporation is constructing, have also gone up to Rs 53 crore. The project has been embroiled in delays, first because the design of the overbridge had to be altered and later due to a shortage of funds. As per norms, if the cost escalation for a project is 20% or more, it has to get approval from the GDA board. The board granted approval for the same last year with a direction to expedite the work.
