Aizawl: At least 3,366 pigs have died in Mizoram due to the resurgence of the
African Swine Fever
(ASF) outbreak this year since March 20 while 1,045 pigs have been culled to prevent further spread of the porcine disease during the same period.
On March 20, a Guwahati laboratory tests confirmed from samples of pig casualties that the deaths were due to ASF infection,
Daily pig casualties on Thursday surged to 107 in 18 localities of southern Mizoram's Siaha town bordering Myanmar (88), and four localities in adjoining Lawngtlai district bordering Myanmar and Bangladesh (19).
Cumulative pig deaths in Siaha town as of Thursday rose to 1,930, followed by Lawngtlai town with 1,245. Additionally, 170 deaths occured in Zawlnuam town of Mamit district bordering Bangladesh and Tripura and 20 in south Mizoram's Lunglei town bordering Bangladesh. State animal husbandry & veterinary department officials said 46 localities in four towns have been declared as ASF-infected areas.
Of 1,045 pigs culled so far, 660 pigs have been culled in Siaha town, 315 in Lawngtlai town, 48 in Zawlnuam town and 22 in Lunglei town.
Tens of thousands of pigs have been killed by ASF infection since March 21, 2021, when the first pig deaths were confirmed at Lungsen village in Lunglei. The outbreak reoccurred every year since then with ASF remaining in the state.

Dimapur: Longleng deputy commissioner W Manpai Phom on Thursday declared Pongching and Hamlikhong villages in the district as African Swine Fever (ASF)-infected zones. The DC made the declaration following a report from the office of the chief veterinary officer of Longleng confirming the occurrence of the disease in the two villages. Phom declared a one km radius of the two infected villages as infected zones and 10 km radius from the infected areas as surveillance zones to control and contain the ASF outbreak. To control the spread of disease, the district administration has also banned slaughter of pigs, import and export of pigs and piglets and transportation of pigs and pork. Meanwhile, Longleng additional deputy commissioner Alongdhimen Jamir on Thursday prohibited dumping, abandoning, or disposing of animal carcasses at the Longleng Town Council's municipal dumping site or any undesignated open space within the municipal limits. The ADC imposed the ban following reports of unlawful dumping of animal carcasses, including pigs and other animals, at the dumping site, leading to significant public health hazards and environmental pollution. He said any violation of the order will result in legal penalties. He reminded that in accordance with the guidelines set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), animal carcasses must be disposed of using scientifically approved methods, such as incineration or deep burial, to minimise health risks and prevent environmental damage.

Itanagar: A confirmed case of African Swine Fever (ASF) has been reported from Luaksim village in Arunachal Pradesh's Longding district, Kanubari mobile veterinary unit officer Dr Ganno Tayeng said on Wednesday. The case has been detected after a blood sample for laboratory diagnostic to National Research Centre on Pig in Assam's Rani district returned positive, Dr Tayeng said, with the veterinary department in Longding issuing a public advisory to contain the spread of the virus. In accordance with standard operating procedures of the state govt, Longding district veterinary officer, Dr Ojuli Moyong, declared a 1-km radius around Luaksim village as an infected zone, while denoting a 10-km radius, beyond the infected area, as a surveillance zone. The department has also banned the movement of pigs and piglets from the infected and surveillance zones and has also suspended the sale and slaughter of pigs within the notified areas.

Aizawl: The total number of pig casualties in the resurgence of African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in Mizoram this year has crossed 5,000 (5,044) pigs, state animal husbandry and veterinary department officials said on Sunday. Additionally, 73 localities and villages in four districts — Siaha, Lawngtlai, Lunglei and Mamit — are being declared as ASF-infected. Southern Mizoram's Siaha district borders Myanmar, while Lawngtlai district shares international borders with both Myanmar and Bangladesh, Lunglei district shares borders with Bangladesh and Mamit district shares a border with Bangladesh and Tripura. While the ASF outbreak is confined to urban areas in Lunglei and Mamit districts, the porcine disease has spread to rural areas in Siaha and Lawngtlai districts.
