Twins lose third consecutive series after 7-2 loss to Nationals

CJ Abrams hit a leadoff homer, stole three bases and scored three runs as the Washington Nationals beat the Minnesota Twins 7-2 on Sunday. Nationals starter Jake Irvin (8-5), a Twin Cities native pitching at Target Field for the first time, gave up two runs on five hits over seven innings. Josh Bell went 3 for 4 with an RBI. Matt Wallner homered and Harrison Bader had two hits for Minnesota, which has lost six of nine since the All-Star break. Daylen Lile tripled and scored on Paul DeJong's sacrifice fly in the fourth to put the Nationals on top 3-2. Washington broke it open with four runs in the fifth off Travis Adams (1-1), keyed by Alex Call's two-run single. Abrams hit the first pitch of the game from Twins opener Cole Sands for his 14th home run of the season. After the Twins tied it on Wallner's second-inning homer, Abrams manufactured a run for the Nationals. He led off the third inning with a single, stole second and third and scored on Luis García Jr.'s sacrifice fly. Minnesota tied it again on Trevor Larnach's sacrifice fly in the bottom half. Leading 4-2, the Nationals loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. Call hit a grounder up the middle that second baseman Brooks Lee was ready to turn into an inning-ending double play. Instead, the ball skipped off the side of the mound and caromed over Lee's head for a two-run single. Abrams has five leadoff homers this year and 12 in 470 career games. Simeon Woods Richardson (5-4, 4.14 ERA) will take the mound for the Twins on Monday as they open a three-game series against visiting Boston. The Nationals travel to Houston, where Brad Lord (2-5, 3.39) will start on Monday.

Dodgers' Dave Roberts makes ‘rock bottom' request after another implosion

The post Dodgers' Dave Roberts makes 'rock bottom' request after another implosion appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Los Angeles Dodgers suffered an ugly 10-7 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night, marking an 11th loss in 14 games as the beleaguered bullpen continues to stink up the joint. The latest bullpen implosion saw Dodgers relievers give up three runs in consecutive innings and seven runs total for the game. Is this rock bottom for Los Angeles? Dodgers manager Dave Roberts sure hopes it can't get any worse, per ESPN's Alden Gonzalez. 'It better be rock bottom,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, 'as far as how we've been pitching, how we've been playing defense.' Los Angeles and Minnesota were tied at 3-3 heading into Tuesday night's sixth inning, but Ben Casparius allowed three runs and then left the game with an injury without recording an out. He walked three hitters and threw just four strikes on 17 pitches. The Dodgers answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, only to see the Twins put up three more runs in the top of the seventh. Will Klein got one out but then walked the bases loaded before Edgardo Henriquez relieved him, only to commit a three-run error that led to boos from the home crowd. This all came after prized offseason acquisition Tanner Scott, who has been a huge disappointment, hit the IL earlier in the day. It's just the latest in a long line of injuries, with relievers Blake Treinen, Michael Kopech, Brusdar Graterol and Evan Phillips all also unavailable. Everybody knows Los Angeles is seeking bullpen help at the trade deadline, so expect a deal to come together soon. The Dodgers have been linked to a number of reliever trade candidates and will surely do whatever it takes to land at least one of them. Despite all these woes, Los Angeles still holds a comfortable 3.5-game lead in the NL West and boasts a loaded roster. Of course, the Dodgers aren't going to win another World Series if the bullpen is a total disaster come October. Is this truly rock bottom for the defending champs? Stay tuned. Twins All-Star Byron Buxton is day-to-day with rib cartilage irritation

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins announced on Sunday that All-Star center fielder Byron Buxton is day-to-day with cartilage irritation in his rib cage. Buxton was pulled from Saturday's game against Washington after he experienced discomfort in his side while running. An MRI performed on Sunday confirmed the irritated cartilage. 'It's a good outcome,' Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. 'We'll see how he is tomorrow and so on, but to be day-to-day with what he left the game with, it's a good thing.' The 31-year-old Buxton is hitting .282 with 23 home runs and an OPS of .905. ___ AP MLB: The Associated Press
