Police repulse terror attack on Bannu post
Police repulsed a terrorist attack on their Fateh Khel post on the outskirts of Bannu city, killing three terrorists in a fierce exchange of fire in which one brave policeman laid down his life, police said on Sunday.
Unidentified terrorists launched a fierce attack on the police post late last night using small and heavy weapons. The police responded promptly, engaging in a heavy exchange of fire and neutralising three attackers while injuring several others, they said.
During the intense gunfight, a brave policeman embraced martyrdom, laying down his life in defence of the country, they added. The security forces have launched a search operation in the area to apprehend the remaining militants and eliminate any lingering threats.
The police said that 40 to 50 terrorists attacked the check post, adding that three terrorists were killed in the firefight that lasted more than an hour. Bloodstains and abandoned footwear at the scene suggested that the fleeing terrorists carried away their wounded accomplices, officials at the scene said.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Bannu Range Sajjad Khan and District Police Officer (DPO) Saleem Abbas Kulachi immediately reached the site of the encounter and commended the valour of the police personnel.
"The terrorists had blocked the roads leading to the post, but the police officials reopened the roads and fought with the terrorists," DIG Khan said in a statement. "Police personnel bravely fought the terrorists, who used heavy weapons," he added.
"The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa [K-P] Police are a courageous force, standing firm on the frontlines against terrorism," he said. "Our officers know how to respond decisively to the enemy's cowardly attacks. Such actions will not demoralize us. The Bannu Police are ready to make every sacrifice for peace," he added.
DIG Sajjad Khan said that Inspector General (IG) of the K-P Police Zulfiqar Hameed also praised the bravery of the police force and paid rich tributes to the martyred cop. "Martyred Constable Rooh Niaz Khan is our hero. His sacrifice for the nation will never be forgotten."
The funeral prayers for martyred Constable Rooh Niaz Khan were offered at Bannu Police Lines on Sunday morning, which were attended by DIG Khan, DPO Kulachi, relatives, and other police officers. On the occasion, DPO Kulachi said that Bannu police were fully capable of confronting terrorists.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi paid tribute to the martyred constable, saying he attained the highest level of martyrdom by sacrificing his life in the line of duty. "The police bravely fought the Indian-sponsored terrorists who attacked at night," he said.
K-P and Balochistan have witnessed an uptick in terrorist attacks in recent months. A report states that militant attacks in July increased by 5% compared to June.
The last month saw a slight increase in militant violence, following a brief decline in the preceding month, the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) said in its monthly report released last week.
The report said that 82 militant attacks were recorded across the country in July, resulting in the death of 101 people, and injuries to 150 others. Among the fatalities, 47 were civilians, 36 security personnel, and 18 militants.
In contrast, the report said that June saw 78 militant attacks, resulting in 100 fatalities and 189 injuries. The July's numbers indicated a 5% increase in the militant attacks compared to the previous month, the report added.
K-P remained the epicentre of such attacks, bearing the brunt of 53 assaults. It was followed by Balochistan with 28 attacks. According to the report, no militant incidents were reported from Punjab, Sindh, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), or the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT).
The report also highlighted intensified counter-militancy operations by the security forces, which resulted in the killing of 106 militants and the arrest of 69 suspected operatives in July.

Indian rupee at risk of lifetime low after Trump ups tariff threat on India
MUMBAI: The Indian rupee may drop past 88 to the U.S. dollar to an all-time low on Tuesday after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened steeper tariffs on Indian goods, worsening fragile sentiment and stoking concerns of more foreign outflows. The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated the rupee will open in the 88.00 to 88.04 range versus the U.S. dollar, down from 87.6550 on Monday. The rupee's previous record low was 87.95, touched in February. Trump again threatened to substantially raise tariffs on Indian goods, citing India's continued purchases and resale of Russian oil. India's foreign ministry responded, saying it will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests and economic security. 'Whether these barrage of comments are mainly negotiating tactics against India to partly prod for changes in the Russia-Ukraine war remains to be seen,' MUFG Bank said in a note. Trump had already imposed higher-than-expected 25% tariffs on Indian imports last week, while U.S. officials continue to highlight multiple hurdles that are delaying a trade deal with India. Sentiment on the rupee has been fragile due to the hefty tariffs on Indian goods. On Monday, the pressure intensified, with the rupee falling despite the dollar weakening broadly. On Monday, the rupee failed to hold on to an intraday recovery to near 87.20. 'Today was already shaping up to be a difficult session (for the rupee), and Trump's latest tariff threat only amplified the pressure,' a senior trader at a private bank said. 'I'd fully expect the Reserve Bank of India to step in — they won't want to let the rupee depreciate unchecked, especially in the face of U.S. rhetoric.' He warned that overseas outflows from Indian equities may gather pace in response to rising trade tensions with the U.S.

Oil little changed after hitting one-week low, oversupply concerns linger
Oil prices were little changed on Tuesday after three days of declines on mounting oversupply concerns after OPEC+ agreed to another large output increase in September, though the potential for more Russian supply disruptions supported the market. Brent crude futures were unchanged at $68.76 a barrel by 0036 GMT while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was at $66.27 a barrel, down 2 cents, or 0.03%. Both contracts fell by more than 1% in the previous session to settle at their lowest in a week. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, together known as OPEC+, pumps about half of the world's oil and had been curtailing production for several years to support the market, but the group introduced a series of accelerated output hikes this year to regain market share. In its latest decision, OPEC+ agreed on Sunday to raise oil production by 547,000 barrels per day for September. It marks a full and early reversal of the group's largest tranche of output cuts, amounting to about 2.5 million bpd, or about 2.4% of global demand, though analysts caution the actual amount returning to the market will be less. At the same time, U.S. demands for India to stop buying Russian oil as Washington seeks ways to push Moscow for a peace deal with Ukraine is increasing concerns of a disruption to supply flows. U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening to impose 100% secondary tariffs on Russian crude buyers. This follows a 25% tariff on Indian imports announced in July. India is the biggest buyer of seaborne crude from Russia, importing about 1.75 million bpd of Russian oil from January to June this year, up 1% from a year ago, according to data provided to Reuters by trade sources. 'India has become a major buyer of the Kremlin's oil since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Any disruption to those purchases would force Russia to find alternative buyers from an increasingly small group of allies,' ANZ senior commodity strategist Daniel Hynes wrote in a note. Traders are also awaiting any developments on the latest U.S. tariffs on its trading partners, which analysts fear could slow down economic growth and dampen fuel demand growth.
