
NHRC notice to Andhra officials over fatal gas leak at pharma plant
In a statement here, the top rights body said that it has asked the authorities to submit a report within two weeks, giving details on health of the injured in the mishap, who was reportedly undergoing treatment at a hospital and compensation, if any, provided to him and the next of kin of the deceased.
The NHRC further said it has 'taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that two employees died and another was hospitalized after inhaling poisonous gas when they were working during the night shift at an effluent waste treatment plant of a Pharmaceutical company in Andhra Pradesh's Anakapalli district on June 11, 2025.'
Reportedly, the workers collapsed after inhaling the poisonous gas, suspected to have been released during the waste treatment process, noted the NHRC.
'The Commission has examined that the contents of the news report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of the human rights of the victims,' said the statement.
Citing the Inspector of Parawada Police Station, R. Mallikarjuna Rao in the region, the media report said that all three were employees of the Safety Department. 'The incident took place during the night shift when the employees were carrying out procedures to treat waste at the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), before transferring it to the Common ETP. The gas, suspected to have been released during the waste treatment process and the workers collapsed immediately,' as per the report.
Ganisetti Satyanarayana, from the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), has demanded compensation of ₹1 crore each for the families of the deceased employees, said the report.

Former Indian hockey player Bimal Lakra hospitalised
Ranchi, July 1 (UNI) Former Indian hockey player Bimal Lakra was hospitalised today after he was found unconscious in a field near his native village Tansar in Simdega district of Jharkhand. He has been admitted to the Curesta Hospital here for advanced treatment. According to Manoj Konbegi, Vice President of Hockey Jharkhand and President of Simdega Hockey, Lakra collapsed while working in his field. He was initially taken to Kurdeg for primary treatment and later referred to Simdega Sadar Hospital, where a CT scan revealed a blood clot in his head. Doctors advised immediate transfer to Ranchi for specialised care. Lakra, 45, represented India as a midfielder and was part of the national squad that won the silver medal at the 2002 Asian Games. His younger brother Birendra Lakra and sister Asunta Lakra have also represented India in international hockey. Taking note of the incident, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has directed Health Minister Irfan Ansari and Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Sudivya Kumar to ensure all necessary medical assistance is provided to Bimal Lakra and to keep him informed of the developments. Gorakhpur, July 1 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel has urged farmers to launch a 'one village, one medicinal plant' campaign. At the inauguration of Uttar Pradesh's first Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath AYUSH University here on Tuesday, she emphasized that with the establishment of this major Ayurveda hub in Purvanchal, the region is set to witness a significant boost in medicinal farming. Welcoming the chief guest, President Droupadi Murmu, the Governor highlighted the economic potential for farmers in the surrounding villages. She said cultivating medicinal plants could enhance farmers' incomes while promoting the production of safe, natural medicines and earning public goodwill. She proposed that each village should specialise in cultivating a specific medicinal plant to maximise benefits. Addressing the broader healthcare landscape, the Governor emphasised the need to ensure access to treatment for every corner of society. She advocated for the distribution of safe and effective Ayurvedic and homoeopathic medicines through Anganwadi centres, and called on doctors, social workers, and public representatives to support this effort. The Governor also noted that both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath remain deeply committed to public health. Minister of State for AYUSH (Independent Charge) Dayashankar Mishra Dayalu also addressed the inauguration ceremony of AYUSH University. The welcome address was given by Vice Chancellor of AYUSH University, Prof. K. Ramachandra Reddy. Prez Murmu inaugurates Van Mahotsav in Gorakhpur
Gorakhpur, July 1 (UNI) President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday inaugurated the week-long Van Mahotsav 2025 celebrations in Gorakhpur, marking a significant push towards environmental awareness. The event, running from July 1 to 7, began with the President planting a Rudraksha sapling under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign during the inauguration of Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath AYUSH University. The President also emphasised the importance of conserving plants, highlighting that plantation efforts must be matched with long-term care and protection. Following the inauguration, she met with elected representatives and toured an exhibition at the venue. Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were also present at the ceremony. As part of the Van Mahotsav, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Forest and Environment, Dr Arun Kumar Saxena, inaugurated Triveni Van, a sacred plantation of Banyan, Neem and Peepal trees, in Kukrail.
