Ballymaloe Cookery School profits soar after Kate Winslet enrolls for course

enrolling for a course at the Ballymaloe Cookery School last year, post-tax profits at the school increased by 53 per cent to €135,952 in 2024, according to its accounts.
It recorded post-tax profits of €88,864 in 2023.
The post-tax profits at the cookery school last year resulted in accumulated profits rising to €3.05 million.
The total remuneration of its three directors – Darina Allen, Toby Allen and Rory O'Connell – in 2024 (including salaries and other benefits) was €329,847; the previous year they shared €336,478.

The east Cork cookery school business sits on a 100 acre organic farm, where Darina Allen is the majority shareholder.
In April of last year, t came under the spotlight after Winslet enrolled in a two-and-a-half-day course there with TV chef and bestselling cookbook author Rachel Allen.
The cookery school usually has more than 60 courses on offer each year and the flagship programme remains the 12-week long certificate course which runs three times every year.
Already, the course for this September and January of next year is booked out, with participants paying €16,295 for September's course and €16,795 for the January option.
The school increased its headcount last year, from 68 to 73 people, with staff costs rising from €2.52 million to €2.6 million.
Staff numbers are made up of three directors , 70 teachers and administration staff.
The profits last year take account of non-cash depreciation costs of €183,123 while directors' pay dipped slightly from €336,478 to €329,847.
The firm's cash funds increased from €944,642 to €988,639.
The book value of the firm's fixed assets increased marginally from €4.7 million to €4.78 million.
Under the heading of 'post balance-sheet event', the accounts said that 'there is a significant risk to the global economy arising from the current geopolitical situation and the impact on energy costs and inflation'.
The note added that 'this development will have implications for the activities of the company in future months. The directors are unable to quantify or determine what the extent of the implications of these matters are for the company as at the date of approval of the financial statements'.
The cookery school is one of a number of businesses operated by members of the Allen family at Ballymaloe.

BusConnects route will come in ‘on time, on budget', says Darragh O'Brien

Darragh O'Brien has pledged that the first of 12 BusConnect corridors in Dublin will come in 'on budget and on time'. Construction is due to begin on the 9.2km Liffey Valley to Dublin city centre route in September after a contract worth up to €274 million was signed with Irish company GMC Group Ltd. Announcing the launch on Thursday, the Minister for Transport said 'it's going to transform bus use within the city' along with significant cycling and walking facilities. Passenger numbers are predicted to increase by 58 per cent with faster travel times. The project is expected to take about three years, he said. Asked about the potential for delays, Mr O'Brien acknowledged he and interim National Transport Authority (NTA) chief executive Hugh Creegan would have responsibility. READ MORE But he said he emphasised to GMC that construction should be 'on time and on budget'. 'That's what we will do our level best to ensure and we have built contingency into this contract too,' he said. 'I think most people understand from a lot of the projects that we build here this is a medieval city. The routes have been mapped and have been surveyed as well. But we're looking at a three-year build on this. If we can do it sooner than that we will, but we're being realistic about it.' Planning for all 12 corridors has been approved, but a number remain subject to High Court judicial review. BusConnects aims to 'transform' bus services. The corridors will cover 230km of dedicated bus lanes overall with 200km of cycling infrastructure. The Liffey Valley scheme is to start at Fonthill Road and connect to the Liffey Valley shopping centre bus interchange. It will continue through Coldcut Road and Ballyfermot village before moving along Sarsfield Road, Grattan Crescent, Emmet Road, James's Street, Thomas Street and High Street, connecting to and the city centre transport network. It will be accompanied by 13.3km of improved cycling infrastructure. Mr O'Brien said the bus corridors were 'really significant', while the proposed MetroLink will be 'transformational ... not just for Dublin, but for the region, and indeed for our airport'. The railway line will link the city centre and Dublin Airport. He rejected comments by Ryanair group chief executive Michael O'Leary , who said the MetroLink project was a waste of money. Mr O'Brien said Ryanair has changed aviation across Europe, but 'this isn't just about the airport or airport connectivity'. North Dublin is a major growth area and MetroLink enabled further economic development for the airport, 'but above and beyond the airport, more housing development along the route, too'. The business case for MetroLink showed a €4 return on every €1 invested. 'It's a badly needed project,' he said, adding: 'We're the fifth-best connected airport in Europe. We're one of the few without a direct rail link into the city and beyond.' Asked about the introduction of contactless payments on public transport, Mr O'Brien said this should be phased in from the end of 2027 or in 2028.

Irish Freenow taxi passengers face no immediate changes following its €175 million sale to rival Lyft , says the company's general manager for Ireland, Danny O'Gorman. US-based Lyft completed its take over of European-focused Freenow on Thursday creating a global business that hosts more than 300 billion individual taxi trips a-year. Most Irish adults use Freenow's taxi hailing app, according to the company, which does not release precise customer numbers. Mr O'Gorman said on Thursday that they faced no immediate changes following the multinational deal, but pledged that they would see the service and mobile app improve in the months ahead. READ MORE Meanwhile, he noted that Irish drivers could get more business from US tourists as a result. US Lyft customers who arrive here will be prompted to download the Freenow app, which will offer them 50 per cent off their first taxi fare, Mr O'Gorman explained. He predicted that the alliance with Lyft would lure more drivers and passengers to the Freenow app, improving reliability, which Mr O'Gorman stressed was 'already very very high'. Lyft has its own mapping technology which aids drivers in negotiating traffic, forecasting demand and likely earnings. 'That will help route taxis to people quickly,' Mr O'Gorman said. However, he cautioned that the technology would not actually increase the number of taxis operating in the Republic, which he noted had grown by 2,000 within the last few years. Freenow employs around 30 people in the Republic in customer and driver support. Mr O'Gorman said that could increase over time. Freenow Ireland generated a turnover of €46.1 million in 2023, which was up from €38.4 million the previous year, according to the last accounts filed by the company. Profit for the year rose 9 per cent from €4.3 million to €4.7 million. Freenow operates in the Republic, UK, Germany, Greece, Spain, Italy, Poland, France, and Austria, according to a statement on Thursday. The statement confirmed that local managers would remain in place in each country.

Food prices rising at three times rate of inflation

Food prices in Ireland are rising at three times the rate of overall inflation, the latest data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show. The agency's latest harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP) for Ireland indicated that the cost of basic groceries rose by 0.2 per cent in July and at a rate of 4.6 per cent over the last 12 months. This compares to an annual inflation rate for the wider economy of 1.6 per cent in July, unchanged from the previous month. The latest figures broadly tally with the latest barometer on grocery inflation from retail group Kantar. READ MORE It put grocery inflation at 5.3 per cent for the 12 weeks up to the middle of June compared to the same 12-week period last year. Kantar also noted that Irish shoppers were increasingly spending more on promotional lines to save money in the face of rising prices. A breakdown of the various components of the latest HICP showed energy prices here grew by 1.5 per cent in July but were down by 0.3 per cent over the past year. The HICP excluding energy and unprocessed food, the underlying inflation rate, is estimated to have grown by 1.7 per cent since July 2024, the CSO said. Eurostat will publish a flash estimate of inflation for the euro zone as a whole on Friday. The European Central Bank (ECB) paused a year-long cycle of interest rate cuts last week with price growth easing to its 2 per cent target rate in June and amid the economic uncertainty from US tariffs. 'The environment remains exceptionally uncertain, especially because of trade disputes,' the euro zone's central bank said while offering few hints as to its next move. Euro zone inflation likely remained around 2 per cent in July, according to various national indices, keeping pressure off policymakers to cut interest rates further. Inflation in Germany eased to 1.8 per cent from 2 per cent, coming below expectations for 1.9 per cent while figures in Italy eased to 1.7 per cent from 1.8 per cent, above expectations for 1.6 per cent. Price growth in France was meanwhile unchanged at 0.9 per cent, above expectations for 0.8 per cent while Spanish inflation jumped to 2.7 per cent from 2.3 per cent. 'Today's national preliminary CPI readings for July, combined with strong Spanish inflation published yesterday, signal that the euro zone is likely to track at the ECB target of 2 per cent this month,' Oxford Economics said in a note. ECB policymakers are also likely to refrain from further rate cuts until they gain more clarity on how US protectionism is impacting prices. Tariffs, imposed by US president Donald Trump on US imports, are expected to weigh on euro zone prices for now since they slow global trade and economic growth. Additional reporting by Reuters
