2 Samajwadi Party leaders booked over PDA Pathshala, school merger protest

An FIR was registered against Samajwadi Party leader Rachna Singh Gautam on Friday for allegedly conducting an unauthorised 'PDA Pathshala' (classroom) outside a government primary school at Shahampur Garhi village in Bilhaur development block of Kanpur. A PDA Pathshala started by SP in Uttar Pradesh. (SOURCED) Police have also registered a case against a Samajwadi Party leader and a dozen people in Bhadohi for allegedly involving schoolchildren in protest against the Uttar Pradesh government's decision to merge schools with low enrolment, officials said. The 'PDA Pathshala' in Bilhaur violated multiple regulations, including provisions under the IT Act and the Right to Education (RTE) Act, officials said. Gautam supposedly held such 'classes' in other villages as well. Gautam organised the 'pathshala' without prior approval from local authorities, and continued with the programme despite objections from the school administration, according to the complaint of the block education officer (BEO). Children were allegedly taught political slogans and references associated with the SP's PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) campaign in the 'pathshala' held in the vicinity of a government school. BEO Ravi Kumar Singh confirmed that photographs and videos of the event had been submitted to the district administration. In the visuals, students are seen reciting phrases linked to the SP, while some videos also allegedly show incorrect basic educational content being taught. These materials were circulated on social media by Gautam herself, Singh said. The BEO said, 'Running such parallel educational setups without any official recognition or permission is illegal. No arrangement can operate alongside a government institution without due process. What was done here is unauthorised.' Kanpur's additional DCP West Kapil Dev Singh stated that a case had been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the IT Act. 'The matter is under investigation,' he said. The FIR includes charges related to misuse of a government facility, spreading misinformation, and political exploitation of children. In a statement, Gautam alleged that the FIR was politically motivated. 'The government is trying to silence voices who are working for marginalised children. I will continue holding such classes. The closure of schools affects the PDA children the most,' she said. In Bhadohi, district magistrate Shailesh Kumar said 40 students of the primary school in Sikandra village under Aurai block were shifted to a vacant anganwadi centre in nearby Pilkhani village -- around 800 metres away -- with the consent of their parents. He said local Samajwadi Party leader Anjani Saroj, along with her supporters, visited the anganwadi centre on Wednesday and distributed pencils, erasers and other items to the children. Later, she allegedly lured the students with toffees, handed them banners and posters and led them in a protest march back to the Sikandra primary school. The matter was probed by the chief development officer and the sub-divisional magistrate, following which the school's headmaster lodged a complaint with the Chauri police station, the DM said. A case was registered against Saroj and others on Thursday evening, officials said. In view of the alleged negligence in the matter, a departmental inquiry has been ordered against Ramakant Singroul, assistant education officer of Aurai, he added. Station house officer of Chauri, Ramesh Kumar, said a case has been lodged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita based on a complaint by headmaster Sabhajit Yadav. (With agencies)

Devil's Den murders row: Former teacher a 'monster'; tickled little girls and gave 'lot of special treatment'

A former primary school teacher accused of brutally murdering a married couple in front of their two daughters at Devil's Den State Park in Arkansas had previously displayed alarming behaviour towards young girls at a school in Texas, a concerned parent has claimed. Andrew James McGann, 28, is accused of stabbing Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, to death on Saturday, while their daughters, aged 9 and 7, fled the scene unharmed. Authorities said McGann later confessed to the killing and was charged with capital murder following a five-day manhunt. In an interview with New York Post on Friday, Zacharri Polyak, whose son attended Donald Elementary School in Flower Mound, Texas, when McGann was a teacher there, alleged deeply troubling past behaviour. 'This monster was around our children,' he said. Polyak recalled that McGann once put a little girl on his lap and said 'things like, 'I wish I could date you, I wish you could be my girlfriend,' just really nasty like grooming behavior.' He also claimed McGann showed 'a lot of special treatment to girls in particular,' adding, 'He was giving them candy, bringing them Sonic drinks, playing tag with them, tickling them, just really suspect behavior.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo Lewisville Independent school district, which oversees Donald Elementary, told New York Post that McGann was placed on administrative leave during the 2022–2023 academic year 'following concerns related to classroom management, professional judgement, and student favoritism.' However, the district said an internal investigation 'found no evidence of inappropriate behavior with students.' McGann resigned in May 2023. Polyak criticised the school's response, 'It should have been an immediate firing with reports to Child Protective Services,' he said. Another parent, Sierra Marcum, whose son was in McGann's fourth-grade class, described him as distant and disengaged. '[He was] pretty cold. You could ask him a question, and he would give you a one-word response,' she told WFAA. 'Overall, just pretty disinterested in his students.' Marcum said she raised concerns with the school after her son came home visibly upset. 'Eventually, he told me that he and some other classmates had noticed that Mr. McGann was very touchy and showed a lot of favoritism to certain girls in the class,' she said. 'I guess [the murder allegations] did surprise me, because while I thought he was off, I never thought he was violent.' McGann was later hired for the 2023–2024 school year at Spring Creek Elementary in Oklahoma. The district said McGann passed all legally mandated national background checks, and there had been no disciplinary issues during his time there. He had also secured a job at Springdale Public Schools in Arkansas, where he was due to start teaching in a week. Superintendent Jared Cleveland confirmed McGann's hiring, but stressed that he 'has not at any time come into contact with Springdale students or the families we serve,' according to 5 News. The shocking murders took place on a hiking trail in the Arkansas state park. Authorities say McGann ambushed the Brink couple, stabbing them to death while their daughters escaped and raised the alarm. He was eventually located and arrested mid-haircut at a local barbershop. McGann appeared in court on Friday (local time) and was ordered to be held without bail. Investigators have not yet established a motive for the killings.

Police seize 60 modified silencers, 500 high-decibel horns

Tirupati: The Tirupati police as part of special drive removed banned horns including 60 modified silencers and 500 high decibel horns. The drive was taken up in select places in the city where the traffic was heavy. A team of city police involved in the drive found in all 560 banned horns and removed them. This includes 60 modified silencers and 500 high decibel horns. These were destroyed under the supervision of district SP Harshavardhan Raju at Police Parade Ground here on Friday. SP Harshavardhan Raju speaking to the media said as per the Motor Vehicle Act, causing noise pollution is punishable and wanted the people to voluntarily remove the banned horns or else face severe action from the police. The SP emphasised that fitting loud silencers violates the Motor Vehicles Act and leads to public inconvenience and noise pollution. Such modifications may also cause other drivers to lose focus, resulting in accidents. SP warned that criminal action would be taken not only against the vehicle owner but also the mechanic involved in the modification. Traffic DSP Ramakrishnamachari said the police let off the vehicles after removing the banned horns and cautioned them against using them again. He said police didn't file a case as it was the first time and will not hesitate to register a case if they found using the banned horns a second time.
