Mariners' Josh Naylor sets insane Seattle stolen bases record in just 4 games after trade

Yahoo5 days ago
No, you didn't misread that headline.
Josh Naylor just set a Seattle Mariners stolen base record. Yeah, 250-pound first baseman Josh Naylor.
In Naylor's first four games with the Mariners, he has stolen four bases. He didn't swipe one in his debut, then has gone 1-2-1 in the last three games.
He's the first player in Seattle franchise history to steal four bases across his first four games with the team, according to the Mariners.
Who knew the Mariners were getting such a speedster from the Diamondbacks in their trade?
Naylor isn't a total shock as a base runner. He was 11-for-13 on steal attempts in Arizona this season, which was already a career-high for him in SBs.
But to go four steals in four games right off the bat? That's quite the initiation.

Smart base runners have gotten better and better at using that to steal second even if they aren't the fastest player around. Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh has double-digit steals this season, too.
Naylor is probably energized by the chance to join a winning ballclub and compete for a playoff spot, too. He's doing what it takes to contribute to the Mariners, and so far, that means taking off and swiping an extra base.

Oregon Ducks land commitment from 5-star DB Davon Benjamin

Dand Lanning and the Oregon Ducks filled the summer offseason months with a lot of recruiting wins, and it doesn't appear that they are slowing down now that we're getting into fall, either. 5-star cornerback Davon Benjamin picked Oregon over the likes of the Texas Longhorns and Michigan Wolverines on Saturday afternoon. The 247Sports Composite rates Benjamin as the No. 35 overall player in the 2026 class, and the No. 4 safety. He stands at 6-foot, 170 pounds. While he is listed at safety, there is an expectation that he will move around in the secondary for Oregon. Benjamin is the Ducks' 17th member of the 2026 class, and the fifth 5-star player, which is the most in the nation. Ahead of Saturday, Oregon had the No. 8 class in the nation, but with the addition of Benjamin, they move up to No. 7. The commitment doesn't come as a major surprise, seeing as there was a crystal ball prediction from the 247Sports recruiting staff for Benjamin to pick the Ducks. With Benjamin now in the mix, Oregon wrapped up the remaining major targets left on its board. Over the next several months throughout the season, there are some players out there who the Ducks will likely work on trying to flip from other schools, and new prospects could pop onto the radar, but Oregon's class in 2026 has shaped up nicely. A Positive Shift Eases the Terry McLaurin Contract Cloud

A sudden shift in culture and a season to remember was supposed to catapult this organization towards the process of dethroning the Philadelphia Eagles. Nothing galvanizes a team on the cusp like seeing a division rival hoist the Lombardi Trophy. Philly's last loss? That came at the hand of the Jayden Daniels and company. These proud franchises are expected to head a two-team race for NFC East superiority. Commanders fans are finally given a break from Terry McLaurin's contract drama Every offseason the NFL releases its Top 100 Players ranking. It's a list comprised of players' votes only. McLaurin is again on the list, as he should be. He lands 52nd overall. It's a nice distraction seeing as how he has been mentioned most often as of late for his standoff with the organization. NFL Top 100 Players of 2025:@Commanders WR Terry McLaurin is ranked No. 52! @NFLFilms — NFL (@NFL) August 1, 2025 It's probably a safe assumption that you've heard about Washington's dilemma involving his extension. Unfortunately, other than his return to training camp practice after missing a few sessions, there is nothing positive to report. More news: Three Legends Save Commanders From Total Erasure on an Elite Roster Negotiations haven't led to much. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn states his dilemma hasn't been provided a distraction to his teammates. That's hard to believe. How could it not be? Wouldn't seeing so many comment on this suggest the opposite is true? Then, there's the other angle. It's a question worth asking. What type of message does this send to the rest of the locker room? How confident might other veterans and young stars be in believing they'll be taken care of when their number comes up? You have to admit it hurts to see the longtime Commander this disgruntled. If there is anyone worth Washington's loyalty, it's this guy. If a possible trip to Super Bowl 60 is in the cards next February, McLaurin must be on this team's roster. McLaurin has long proven his loyalty. He hung around when he could have accepted opportunities to play elsewhere or leave for money, so with there being a need for positivity, we'll take our 'wins' where we can. His inclusion on the top 100 players ranking certainly provides one. It's a nice reminder of the esteem his peers and teammates have for him. Now, comes the question. Might we see a similar show of respect from the only organization he has known since entering the league in 2019. For more Washington Commanders and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports
