Centre Brings 73 Major Railway Stations Under Special Action Plan To Handle Festive Rush

India.coma day ago
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday informed the Parliament that it has been decided to create permanent waiting areas outside 73 railway stations across the country, which periodically face heavy crowds as part of the action plan to handle the rush of passengers during the festive season.
These major stations facing rush situations will have a Station Director, empowered to take "on-the-spot decongesting decisions" like restricting sale of tickets as per capacity and availability of trains during the festive rush, the minister told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
The crowd build-up will be controlled within the waiting area. Passengers will be allowed to go to the platforms only when their trains arrive at the platform. This will decongest the platforms, he said.
The pilot projects have started at New Delhi, Anand Vihar, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Ghaziabad stations, he said.
The action plan is based on the experience gained from the use of these measures to handle the passenger rush at stations such as Surat, Udhna, Patna and New Delhi in 2024. Similar arrangements were made during the Mahakumbh at nine stations in the Prayagraj area.
Based on the experience at these stations, it has been decided to ensure complete access control at the 73 identified stations.
Passengers with confirmed reserve tickets will be given direct access to the platforms, while passengers without a ticket or with a waiting list ticket will wait in the outside waiting area. All unauthorised entry points will be sealed, the minister said.
He also said that two new designs of 12 metres wide (40 feet) and 6 metres wide (20 feet) standard FOB have been developed. These wide FOBs with ramps were very effective in crowd management during the Mahakumbh. These new standard wide FOBs will be installed in all the stations.
Besides, cameras helped crowd management in a big way during the Mahakumbh. CCTV cameras at Railway stations and adjoining areas will aid close monitoring and management of the crowd at railway stations, the minister said.
War rooms will also be developed at large stations, in which officers of all departments will work during crowd situations.
The latest digital communication equipment, like walkie-talkies, announcement systems, and calling systems, will be installed on all heavy crowd stations.
The minister further stated that all staff and service personnel will be given a new design ID card so that only authorised persons can enter the station. All staff members will also be given new design uniforms so that they can be easily identified during a crisis situation.
All major stations will have a senior officer as Station Director. All other departments will report to the Station Director, who will get financial empowerment so that he can take on-the-spot decisions for improving the station, the minister said.
Besides, coordination with other stakeholders such as GRP/State Police has been stepped up, and Railway Protection Force (RPF) staff are deployed at sensitive locations to regulate the crowd smoothly during the heavy rush period and render real-time assistance to passengers, the minister added.

PM Modi underlines ‘economic priorities', gives call for Swadeshi push after Trump's ‘dead economy' jibe

Days after US President Donald Trump labelled India a 'dead economy,' Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that the country must remain alert to its 'own economic priorities' amid the instability and uncertainty facing the world economy. He urged Indians to stand firm on economic nationalism and self-reliance. Speaking at a public rally in Varanasi's Banauli village, Modi underscored that India is on track to become the world's third-largest economy amid growing international uncertainty. 'In such times, countries are focusing solely on their own interests. India, too, must remain alert to its own economic priorities,' Modi said, invoking a renewed push for Swadeshi. 'At a time when the world is going through uncertainty, let us take a pledge to sell only Swadeshi goods from our shops and markets. Promoting made in India goods will be the truest service to the country.' The remarks come days after Trump announced a 25 per cent import tariff on Indian goods, effective August 7, and warned of further penalties for India's ongoing purchase of Russian crude oil and military equipment. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said: 'They (Russia and India) can take their dead economies down together, for all I care.' After Trump's statement, India's response was measured. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal told Parliament on Thursday that India remains the world's fastest-growing major economy and is widely expected to emerge as the third-largest globally in the near future. In his speech Saturday, Modi framed the global economic instability as a moment of opportunity for India. 'The feeling of Swadeshi in every action will define our future,' he said. 'This will also be a true tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Only through collective effort can we fulfil the dream of a developed India.' He urged citizens to become conscious consumers and adopt the 'Vocal for Local' mantra. 'Whatever we buy, we should ask ourselves – has an Indian toiled to make this? If it has been made by the sweat of our people, with their skills, that product is Swadeshi for us.' The prime minister also called on all political parties to unite behind the goal of national economic advancement. 'If we want India to become the third-largest economy, every political party and every leader, keeping aside their hesitations, must work in the nation's interest and awaken the spirit of Swadeshi among the people,' he said.

After Trump's 25% Tariff Move, PM Modi's Big 'Swadeshi' Push

Days after US President Donald Trump announced that a tariff of 25%, plus an unspecified penalty because of energy imports from Russia, would be imposed on Indian exports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the world economy is going through a period of uncertainty and made a push for 'swadeshi' (made in India) products Addressing a rally in his constituency Varanasi on Saturday, PM Modi said India has to focus on its economic priorities and every citizen should resolve to buy 'swadeshi'. "Today, the world economy is going through many ups and downs. There is an atmosphere of uncertainty. In such a situation, every country is focusing on its own interests. India is also going to become the third-largest economy in the world and, therefore, has to be alert to its economic interests. Our farmers, our industries, employment for our young people, their interests - all of these are paramount for us. The government is making every effort in this direction," the Prime Minister said. "But, as citizens of the country, we also have some responsibilities... This is something not just Modi but everyone should keep saying. Anyone who wants to make India the third-largest economy in the world, any political party, any leader, should speak in the country's interest and instil in people that they need to resolve to buy 'swadeshi'... When we decide to buy anything, there should be only one measure: We are going to buy those things which an Indian has sweated to make. Anything that has been made by the people of India, using the skill of the people of India, by the sweat of the people of India, is 'swadeshi' for us. We will have to adopt the 'vocal for local' mantra," he explained. 'True Service' Calling for 'Make in India' products to be given an impetus, he urged people to resolve that all new things that they buy are 'swadeshi'. "And today, I would like to make a special request to my brothers and sisters from the business world, to shopkeepers, that when the when the world is going through such uncertainty, then even we will sell only local products. This resolution will be true service to the country... The feeling of 'swadeshi' in every action will define our future. This will also be a true tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Only through collective effort can we fulfil the dream of a developed India," the Prime Minister said. The 25% tariff was announced by Donald Trump on Wednesday - following it up with a jibe that India and Russia are "dead economies" - and the government has said it is studying the implications of the move and will take all necessary steps to safeguard India's national interest. Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had also said negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement are on. "The implications of the recent developments are being examined by the government. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is engaged with all stakeholders, including exporters and industry, for taking feedback on their assessment of the situation. The government attaches the utmost importance to protecting and promoting the welfare of our farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, exporters, MSMEs and all sections of industry. We will take all necessary steps to secure and advance our national interest," the minister said.

AAP Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Kumar Mittal brings resolution to designate Pak ‘state sponsor of terrorism'

Chandigarh: AAP Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Kumar Mittal on Saturday tabled a resolution in the House to designate Pakistan as a 'state sponsor of terrorism'. The resolution was introduced as part of a parliamentary intervention during the ongoing monsoon session. In a press statement, Mittal said he recounted Pakistan's decades-long policy of using terrorism as a tool of foreign policy. Citing documented instances from the 1947 invasion of Jammu & Kashmir to the recent Pahalgam terror attack, the resolution called for sweeping measures, including diplomatic isolation, economic sanctions, and a review of bilateral agreements like the Indus Water Treaty. The resolution further underscored Pakistan's direct role in key terror incidents that shook India, such as the 2001 Parliament attack, 26/11 Mumbai attacks, 2016 Uri attack, and the 2019 Pulwama bombing, while also pointing to its global footprint in events like the 9/11 attacks and the 2015 Paris carnage. The resolution urged the govt of India to introduce legislation designating Pakistan as a state sponsor of terrorism and enforce a complete freeze on economic and trade relations. This also includes Pakistan's re-inclusion in the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list and further lobbying for their inclusion in the black list.
