KUCHING (July 2): The Padungan Garden public toilet is set to undergo upgrading works as part of Kuching City South Council's (MBKS) ongoing efforts to enhance public infrastructure in support of tourism, heritage, and sustainable urban development.
Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the upgrading project will be carried under the BP1 allocation, which is designated for minor development works, including upgrades or repairs of public toilets and other facilities.
'Located in the heart of historic Padungan, the public toilet is an essential facility for visitors frequenting the area,' he said in a statement yesterday.
Wee noted that Padungan is famously home to the iconic White Cat statue – a popular photo spot for tourists – and has grown increasingly vibrant thanks to its rich heritage and burgeoning gastronomy scene.
'This project is aligned with MBKS' broader vision of building a livable, inclusive, and environmentally-conscious city that offers quality services and infrastructure, especially in areas of high historical and tourism value.'
Wee also highlighted Padungan's emergence in recent years as a culinary spot, with numerous new gastronomy outlets contributing to Kuching's identity as a Unesco Creative City of Gastronomy.
'Efforts are underway to ensure our public spaces and facilities support this branding. Clean, accessible, and well-maintained infrastructure is essential for welcoming tourists and ensuring a pleasant visit,' he added.
He emphasised that while the toilet upgrading project may seem small, it plays a significant role in elevating Padungan's image as a tourist-friendly and sustainable destination.
The project is scheduled to begin immediately following the handover of the site to the appointed contractor. Kuching MBKS Padungan Garden public toilet upgrade

‘Digital skills must grow alongside facilities'

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia must go beyond developing data centres and ramp up its digital capabilities to stay ahead in a fast-changing global economy, says MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. While the country's data infrastructure is expanding rapidly, he said this growth must be matched with artificial intelligence (AI) development, content creation and the cultivation of local digital talent. 'Accelerating artificial intelligence and developing a skilled digital workforce are essential if Malaysia wants to stay relevant in a fast-evolving digital landscape,' Dr Wee said. He was speaking at the launch of Malaysia's promotion for the Fourth Global Digital Trade Expo (GDTE), to be held from Sept 25 to 29 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. Dr Wee, who attended last year's edition of the GDTE, said Malaysian businesses must now embrace 'new retail' models, blending online and offline operations, and adopt digital tools to expand into regional markets. 'Our goal is to move beyond isolated participation and towards systemic engagement, from individual efforts to integrated platforms,' he said. Since its launch in 2022, the GDTE has drawn over 3,500 companies and international organisations from 123 countries, showcasing innovations across AI, e-commerce, digital health, smart logistics and semiconductor technologies. Dr Wee noted that Malaysian companies have already played active roles at the expo as exhibitors, buyers and online collaborators with Chinese firms, and urged more businesses to tap into the opportunities. He stressed that the global economy has fully entered the digital age, and Malaysian industries from manufacturing and exports to services and innovation must assess whether they are adequately prepared. 'This expo provides a national-level platform for Malaysian businesses to connect with the Chinese market, learn from its digital progress and find areas for complementary cooperation rather than becoming trapped in direct competition,' he said. 'It's about collaboration, learning and unlocking opportunities in a fast-evolving digital landscape.' Meanwhile, Chen Wen, chief representative of the Zhejiang Representative Office in Singapore and South-East Asia, described Malaysia as a digital economy pioneer within Asean, noting the country's progress in e-payments, smart logistics, and digital infrastructure. Chen said Zhejiang, home to tech giants like Alibaba and Hikvision, has led China's digital transformation, recording double-digit growth in its digital economy since it was named China's first National Digital Economy Innovation Development Pilot Zone in 2019. In 2024, Malaysia-Zhejiang bilateral trade reached US$16.89bil (RM79.38bil), up 14.9% from the previous year. As of March, Zhejiang companies had invested in 251 projects in Malaysia, with approved investments totalling US$3.03bil (RM14.24bil). Also speaking at the event was Li Sa, Counsellor for Economic and Commercial Affairs at the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia, who praised Malaysia's strong digital infrastructure, supported by the boom in data centre development and an innovative ecosystem that points to a promising market outlook. She expressed confidence about deeper China–Malaysia cooperation in the digital space and urged Malaysian firms to seize the opportunity to participate in the upcoming GDTE. 'China's development will not crowd out neighbouring markets. Instead, it will create an ever-expanding consumer base for them.' She also extended an invitation to Malaysia to attend the China International Import Expo in Shanghai this November. Also present at the event were Secretary-General of the Zhejiang Provincial Chamber of Foreign Contractors He Yun, Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce president Loo Kok Seong, MCA vice-presidents Datuk Lawrence Low and Datuk Tan Teik Cheng, as well as MCA secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon.

Kuching South Mayor shares urban solutions at World Cities Summit in Vienna

Wee speaks at one of the sessions during the forum. KUCHING (July 4): Kuching South Mayor, Datuk Wee Hong Seng, was among the city leaders invited to speak at the prestigious Mayors Forum of the World Cities Summit, held in Vienna, Austria, from July 2 to 4. Themed 'Liveable and Sustainable Cities: Local Solutions, Global Impact', the forum brought together mayors from around the world to exchange ideas on urban development and foster global collaboration in city governance. Jointly organised by Singapore's Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC) and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), the by-invitation-only forum served as a platform for mayors to engage in high-level discussions and share practical experiences aimed at improving urban quality of life. According to a statement, Wee represented the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) during a session titled 'Providing Reliable and Efficient Municipal Services', where he outlined MBKS's initiatives to enhance public service delivery. He highlighted the iPeople App, which allows residents to report municipal issues and receive real-time updates, improving response times and communication between the council and the community. Wee also showcased the council's weekly Facebook Live townhall sessions, held every Saturday, as a platform for two-way engagement with residents. Another key initiative presented was the iBuyBack App, designed to encourage recycling by linking households with licensed recyclers, contributing to better waste management and environmental sustainability. 'Our focus is on being present, being reachable, and responding swiftly to our community's needs. 'By making communication simple and services reliable, we build trust with our residents and support a more liveable city,' he said. Wee's participation reflects MBKS's ongoing commitment to effective urban governance and its contribution to the global pursuit of liveable, inclusive and sustainable cities. Crucial for Malaysia to strengthen digital capabilities, says MCA president

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia must match its growing data infrastructure with stronger digital capabilities to stay competitive in the global economy, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. The MCA president stressed that the country can no longer rely solely on the rapid expansion of data centres and must now prioritise AI development, content creation and the cultivation of local digital talent. 'Accelerating artificial intelligence and building a skilled digital workforce are essential if Malaysia is to remain relevant in a fast-evolving digital landscape,' he said. Malaysia's businesses are poised to strengthen their digital trade ties with China through deeper participation in the upcoming Fourth Global Digital Trade Expo (GDTE) in Hangzhou — a move expected to open up broader opportunities for Malaysian enterprises seeking digital growth. The GDTE, China's only national-level international trade exhibition dedicated exclusively to digital trade, will be held from Sept 25 to 29, 2025, in Zhejiang province. Dr Wee, who attended last year's edition, noted that this year, Malaysian local businesses are encouraged to adopt "new retail" and digital business models that integrate online and offline operations, enabling them to leverage digital tools to expand into regional markets. 'Our goal is to move beyond isolated participation and towards systemic engagement — from individual efforts to integrated platforms,' he said at the Malaysian launch of the GDTE promotion, co-organised by MCA and the Zhejiang Provincial Economic and Trade delegation. Since its launch in 2022, the event has attracted over 3,500 companies and international organisations from 123 countries, spanning frontier sectors such as AI, smart logistics, e-commerce, digital health, and semiconductor technology. Dr Wee said that Malaysian companies have already played an active role in past editions of the expo, including as buyers, exhibitors, and online collaborators with Chinese firms. He stressed that the global economy has fully entered the digital age, and Malaysian industries, from manufacturing and exports to services and innovation, must assess whether they are adequately prepared. 'This expo provides a national-level platform for Malaysian businesses to connect with the Chinese market, learn from its digital progress, and find areas for complementary cooperation, rather than becoming trapped in direct competition,' he said. 'It's about collaboration, learning, and unlocking opportunities in a fast-evolving digital landscape.' On policy, Dr Wee reaffirmed MCA's commitment to digital development, noting that the party has consistently called for balanced regulation. Meanwhile, Chen Wen, chief representative of the Zhejiang Representative Office in Singapore and South-East Asia, praised Malaysia as a digital economy pioneer within Asean and citing the country's progress in e-payments, smart logistics, and digital infrastructure. Chen said Zhejiang Province, home to tech giants such as Alibaba and Hikvision has led China's digital transformation, recording double-digit growth in its digital economy since being designated China's first National Digital Economy Innovation Development Pilot Zone in 2019. In 2024, bilateral trade between Malaysia and Zhejiang reached US$16.89bil (RM79.38bil), a 14.9% increase from the previous year. As of March 2025, Zhejiang companies had invested in 251 projects in Malaysia, with total approved investments of US$3.03bil (RM14.24bil). Li Sa, Counsellor for Economic and Commercial Affairs at the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia, said the country boasts a strong digital infrastructure, supported by the rapid development of data centres in recent years. Malaysia's active efforts in fostering an innovative ecosystem also point to a promising market outlook, she added. She expressed confidence that China-Malaysia collaboration in the digital space will advance rapidly, and encouraged Malaysian enterprises to take part in the Fourth Global Digital Trade Expo, where they can engage with partners from China and around the world to exchange ideas, forge partnerships, and explore future trends in digital trade. 'China's development will not crowd out neighbouring markets—it will create an ever-expanding consumer base for them,' she said. She also extended an invitation for Malaysia to attend the upcoming China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai this November, noting that China is likely the only country to host such an event specifically aimed at balancing bilateral trade with its partners.
