Govt plans to evict 1k families for aerocity project: Saikia
2
Guwahati: Opposition leader and senior Congressman Debabrata Saikia claimed on Tuesday that the state govt plans to seize land from hundreds of indigenous families near Guwahati airport to hand it over to the Adani group for an aerocity project.
The move has sparked unrest in the villages of Garal, Mirzapur, and Azara, as residents received land acquisition notices from the Kamrup (Metro) administration in recent days.
"The Assam govt is planning to evict more than 1000 families and acquire a large amount of land for the proposed Adani group's aerocity at Guwahati airport. The govt intends to acquire the land in the name of Assam Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) to transfer it to the Adani Group for the aerocity," Saikia alleged.
Congress and several other opposition parties earlier opposed the Centre's decision to transfer the management of Guwahati airport to the Adani group. Saikia said previously, in 2021, the state govt evicted 54 families for airport expansion. "Now, they plan to acquire approximately 410 bighas of land in Kamrup Metropolitan district's Ramcharani Mouza, including 70 bighas in Garal village, 257 bighas in Mirzapur village, and 83 bighas in Azara," he said.

While eviction notices have been issued to about 1,116 families living near the airport, Saikia added that some of the families have land deeds for more than a century. "This acquisition of ancestral land demonstrates the govt's ruthlessness. Despite claiming to prioritise Assamese interests, the chief minister's actions reveal a bias towards capitalists. Additionally, local businesses, including homes, flats, and small enterprises, will be negatively impacted," Saikia cautioned.
He rued that the state govt is using the 'outdated' Assam Land (Requisition and Acquisition) Act, 1964, for this acquisition instead of The Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013 (RFCTLARR Act). "RFCTLARR Act, 2013 ensures fair compensation and consent from affected families," he said.
While the affected villagers have formed a committee to protest the move, many local businesses fear significant losses from the aerocity project. "They said guest houses, hotels, and restaurants around the airport in Borjhar, Azara, Mirza, and Dharapur will struggle to compete with Adani's Aerocity, reducing their sales and demand," Saikia said.
He further added, "Environmentally, the aerocity could negatively impact the nearby Ramsar site, Deepor Beel, and surrounding agricultural and grazing lands."

Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring urges Centre to intervene in Punjab's land pooling policy
1 2 3 Chandigarh: Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said Sunday that the Punjab Land Pooling policy was in clear violation of the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, enacted by the Congress-led UPA govt in 2013 when Dr Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister. In a written statement, Warring said it was the reason he had "urged the Central government to intervene and stop the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab from implementing the land pooling policy, which is being forced upon the unwilling farmers of the state." He stated, "While the BJP tried unsuccessfully to dilute the provisions of the law, the AAP is completely subverting it in Punjab." Warring added, "After the BJP came to power at the centre in 2014, it tried to dilute the Act and its various provisions. It was for this reason that then Union minister Arun Jaitely visited then Congress president Sonia Gandhi. It was in this context that leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said that late Arun Jaitely tried to threaten him as he was strongly against the dilution of the provisions of the Land Acquisition Act. " Warring added, "Thanks to the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi in particular, the BJP govt dropped the idea of diluting the Land Acquisition Act, which ensures that farmers' rights are protected and they are adequately compensated and rehabilitated if their land is acquired after their due consent." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ask A Pro: "I'm 70 with $1.4M in IRAs. He added, "The AAP government is taking farmers' land without any compensation. This will not be allowed to happen at any cost." Opposition to step up protest; BJP says SIR debate off-limits
The Opposition is gearing up to escalate its protest over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, following the release of the draft roll by the Election Commission. It is also planning to press for a discussion on the issue in both Houses of Parliament, which have remained stalled for the past two weeks, barring a 16-hour debate on Operation Sindoor. To coordinate their next moves, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi have invited leaders of the INDIA bloc for a dinner meeting on August 7 at Gandhi's official residence in New Delhi. Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar, Abhishek Banerjee and Tejashwi Yadav are among those who have confirmed participation. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju reiterated that a discussion on SIR cannot be allowed under parliamentary rules. "The government is ready to discuss any issue as per rules. But this is a process undertaken by a constitutional authority and it's not the first time it's being done," he said. Citing former Lok Sabha Speaker Balram Jakhar, he added, "What is not favoured by rules and convention cannot be discussed." He also asked who in the House would answer on behalf of the EC. Opposition leaders, however, remain firm. Rahul Gandhi, after a meeting with Speaker Om Birla, accused the EC of acting on behalf of the BJP. "Whoever in the Election Commission is involved in this exercise-from top to bottom-we will not spare you. You are working against India. This is no less than treason," he said. Live Events In Rajya Sabha, several opposition MPs have submitted notices under Rule 267 seeking to suspend regular business and hold a discussion on the SIR, as well as issues such as alleged atrocities against Bengali-speaking people in some states. Government sources told ET that Rule 267 notices are rarely accepted and are meant for extraordinary situations. "Currently, members are submitting notices on a range of issues, but there is no consensus among them," a source said. Deputy Chairman Harivansh, addressing members in the Upper House on Thursday, urged them to use Question Hour and Zero Hour more productively. "This session provided opportunities for 120 questions, 120 Zero Hour submissions and 120 Special Mentions. But only 11 questions, three submissions and 17 mentions could be taken up. The House has lost 30 hours and six minutes of members' time-not government business time," he said.
