Saskatchewan Rattlers aim to break franchise attendance record against Bandits

Global News06-06-2025
When the Saskatchewan Rattlers take to the court on Sunday afternoon hosting the Vancouver Bandits, not only will the team be searching for their first home win of the 2025 Canadian Elite Basketball League, they'll be surrounded by what they hope will be a record-breaking crowd.
This after the 1-4 Rattlers fell 105-65 to the Bandits in their CEBL season opener back on May 15.
'Vancouver is coming back and we're ready to get a little bit of revenge onto them,' said Rattlers manager of ticket sales and premium seating Graham Forrester.
'We're looking to set a new attendance record, so that's obviously weighing heavily on everybody's minds here of filling the 'Snake Pit' and making sure everyone is getting the best experience.'
The Rattlers will be aiming to smash their previous single-game attendance record of just over 3,200 fans on Sunday with the team projecting at least 3,600 fans through the door by opening tip-off.

According to Forrester, the weekend tilt against Vancouver had been identified as a big seller and has only ramped up over the last few weeks, with new ticket and drink promotions.
'We've had some big groups come in prior to the season,' said Forrester. 'So we knew that it already was going to be a really successful game. We started seeing a little bit more momentum, we launched our 'Family Pack' and that started off really, really well. We were like, 'OK, we've got a really good shot to fill the 'Snake Pit.''

Saskatchewan is coming off its first win of the 2025 season on May 31, as they managed to beat the defending CEBL champions in the Niagara River Lions 89-87 off a Jordan Bowden put-back in target score time.

As part of their record-breaking attempt, the Rattlers have also donated 100 tickets to the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority for their games Sunday against Vancouver and on June 13th versus Scarborough to evacuees of the recent Northern Saskatchewan wildfires.

It's a gesture they hope will provide a few hours of normalcy for those residents who have had to flee their homes.
'Obviously we're not donating toothbrushes and the basic necessities for life,' said Forrester. 'But if we can give them an experience for two, two and a half hours where they can take their mind off things that are going on back in their home communities, that's what we can do as a pro basketball team.
'I think the community is starting to see that as well and they've actually said to us the importance of donation of activities is really, really important.'
The push for a new record attendance benchmark comes after teams like the Winnipeg Sea Bears and Calgary Surge have packed their respective arenas, as well as the CEBL playing its first outdoor game between the Montreal Alliance and Ottawa BlackJacks at IGA Stadium which had to be declared a no-contest due to rain.
Forrester added that success around the league is pushing the Rattlers to raise their own standards and bring more attention on the CEBL as a whole.
'I think the whole team is incredibly excited,' said Forrester. 'The whole organization is excited, I think even our league is excited. We've seen some huge crowds across the entire league. Right now, us keeping pace with them is happening and it's important to continue happening. I think everybody is really excited to see that place full.'

Sunday's game will be a 4 p.m. tip-off at SaskTel Centre, while the Rattlers will kick off the weekend with a Friday evening tilt in Calgary against the Surge.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers QB Zach Collaros ruled out for rematch against Argos

If the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are going to get back on track this week, it'll be without their number one quarterback. The Bombers' struggling offence will not have their leader for the rematch against the Toronto Argonauts, as starting QB Zach Collaros has already been ruled out. Collaros missed their only practice of the week on Wednesday ahead of Friday's game, where the Bombers will be looking to end a three-game losing skid. Collaros couldn't finish their last two games with what the team is calling a neck injury, but head coach Mike O'Shea does not expect him to be out for very long. Collaros was originally hurt in the first half against the Calgary Stampeders and had to exit the game immediately. After practicing all last week, he started again in Saturday's loss to Toronto. And while there was no noticeable injury, Collaros didn't come out for the second half and finished the game on the sidelines. Story continues below advertisement Backup quarterback Chris Streveler replaced Collaros both times. O'Shea wouldn't confirm his starting QB after Wednesday's closed practice, but all signs point to Streveler with O'Shea still singing his praises. 'We like his leadership. I mean, he steps in there and he's a pro. He wants to do very well for his teammates. That part of it is so important to him, right? So, besides the fact that he's fun to watch, he can make big plays.' Terry Wilson is their other option at quarterback and Chase Artopoeus will likely dress as their third stringer. Offensive lineman Stanley Bryant also won't play on Friday as he'll miss a third straight game with an ankle injury. The Bombers have nine players with injuries on their official injury report. Running back Peyton Logan (thigh) and defensive lineman Jamal Woods (knee) will remain out of the lineup and receiver Kody Case also won't play in their week nine matchup after suffering what appeared to be a pretty serious ankle injury against the Argos. Long snapper Mike Benson (hip), offensive lineman Micah Vanterpool (ankle), and linebacker Enock Makonzo (elbow) are all listed as questionable to play. Offensive lineman Eric Lofton (knee) was a full participant on Wednesday and could be an option after missing the first six games of the season. Canucks: What can Jake DeBrusk do after career season? Be more of a hound

There is truth in advertising. Article content When Jake DeBrusk joined the Vancouver Canucks in free agency last summer, his biggest supporter and constant confidant banged the drum about the big winger's potential with a fresh start in a new city. Article content Article content It's what you expect from his father, Louie DeBrusk, a former NHL grinder and a Sportsnet and Hockey Night In Canada analyst. Article content 'The guy is a hound,' DeBrusk told this reporter of his son's upside. 'He's not easy to play against, he tracks back, blocks shots, and can play the penalty kill and power play. The most important thing is the kid is a finisher. Jake brings energy and a lot of speed, and when he's buzzing he'll take over a line.' Article content Or a game. Article content In that respect, the elder DeBrusk's summation was bang on. However, he could have added a streaky-scorer disclaimer. Article content DeBrusk, 28, bagged a career-high 28 goals in 2024-2025, with 14 on the power play, which ranked fifth in the NHL. He also struck for 19 road goals, which was 10th overall, and had a pair of hat-tricks. His 16.4 per cent shooting accuracy was third on a team that couldn't finish, with a 23rd ranking of just 2.84 goals per outing. Article content DeBrusk scored 12 of his goals with a wrist shot, five with a snapshot and two with a backhand, which showed versatility. And if the Canucks expect a season of redemption and return to the playoffs, they can't be missing the net and must show more moxie on home ice. Article content Article content The team stumbled out of the gate last season at Rogers Arena and were 3-5-3 after 11 dates. They won two straight in Vancouver on just two occasions, and finished at 17-16-8. Minnesota and claimed the final two Western Conference wild-card playoff berths with 23-13-5 and 24-14-3 home marks respectively. Article content While DeBrusk had a season to remember, he scored just nine times at home as the Canucks fell seven points short of the postseason. A few more wins at Rogers Arena and they would have been in. That should stick in the craw. And with two of their first three games next season at home, they need an early swagger. Article content Article content As for DeBrusk, what can he do for an encore? Consistency is key to get to the next competitive level. He's already a salary-cap bargain with seven years left at $5.5 million US in annual average value, but there's always room to improve. Article content DeBrusk didn't score in his first nine games last season. He struck in the next three, then went six games without a goal before erupting for nine in his next seven outings. That was followed by no goals in 11 games, one in a dozen games, and striking for three goals in his final four games. Article content 'Be patient. Don't let it get in your head,' he suggested. 'I need to take more control with body position and stop guessing where the puck is going to go.'
