Sugar, rice prices soar in wholesale markets

Express Tribune22-06-2025
With the upcoming fiscal year's budget implementation looming, wholesale markets have begun raising prices.
The price of a 50kg sugar sack rose by Rs300 on Wednesday, and an additional Rs200 increase is expected this week, pushing the retail price of sugar up by Rs10 to Rs190 per kg.
The price of tea leaves reached Rs2,200 per kg, while lentils and rice saw per-bag increases of Rs350 and Rs400, respectively.
Wholesale traders have warned that new prices for all grocery items will be issued within the next ten days due to newly imposed taxes.
They have also reduced the supply of sugar, rice, and lentils by 30 to 40 per cent, causing shortages in stores across the city.
Grocery Merchants Association President Salim Pervez Butt stated that prices of essential items like pulses, sugar, ghee, and rice are rising by Rs100 to Rs200 per bag daily.
Despite payments and orders, wholesalers are failing to meet demand. Rising fuel prices have also made transportation more expensive.
He criticised authorities for targeting small retailers while ignoring large-scale price hikes by wholesalers.
He questioned the early increase in prices, given that new taxes are set to take effect on July 1. Fears are mounting that milkmen, butchers, and bakers will also raise prices of milk, yoghurt, meat, and bread in July due to these tax measures.

Govt starts taxing all bank transactions

At high tax rates, profit margins for sellers decrease, leaving them with options to pass on the burden to consumers, compromise on the quality of products, evade taxes or find cheaper illicit goods. photo: file Listen to article The federal government has started collecting taxes on all types of bank transactions for both filers and non-filers from July 1. The government has increased the tax rate for non-filers on cash withdrawals from banks, while filers are also subject to withholding tax for withdrawals exceeding Rs50,000 per day. According to the new tax regime, filers will be charged 0.3% tax on withdrawals exceeding Rs50,000 per day, while non-filers will be charged 0.6%. Furthermore, banks have increased their charges, including ATM card fees, SMS alert fees, and fees for using other banks' ATMs. These additional charges have led to disputes between bank customers and staff, with many expressing frustration over the increased costs. As the banks revised their schedule of charges effective July 1, customers are facing double the burden in respect to increased costs. The ATM usage fee for other banks' customers has been revised from Rs18 to Rs34 per transaction. Additionally, the ATM card fee has been increased by Rs700, and the SMS alert service fee has been hiked from Rs1,200 to Rs2,000, a rise of Rs800. Non-filers will also face a deduction of Rs522 for cash withdrawals of Rs20,000 or more through a cheque. Furthermore, banks have set daily withdrawal limits for ATM users, with standard debit card holders able to withdraw up to Rs25,000 to Rs50,000 per day, premium card holders up to Rs500,000 per day, and foreign debit card holders the equivalent of $200 to $500 per day. The tax deduction will be automatic for transactions exceeding Rs50,000 per day. In addition to the existing charges, banks will now deduct fees for international ATM transactions based on either the exchange rate or a fixed fee set by the bank. The disputes have prompted banks to approach 1Link for revising the schedule of charges. Banks claim that these changes will impact banking transactions and promote a cash economy. The increased charges and tax rates have sparked frustration among bank customers, leading to a rise in conflicts with bank staff.

CDWP clears six Daanish schools

The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) on Thursday approved the establishment of six Daanish schools in Balochistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), at a cost of Rs19.253 billion, in line with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's initiative to provide quality education system to far-flung areas. The Planning Ministry said in a statement that these schools would be built under the formula of 50:50 cost-sharing by the federal government and the respective provincial governments. "These schools aim to uplift the most marginalised segments of society by providing access to quality education," it said. According to the statement, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal chaired the meeting, attended by Planning Secretary Awais Manzur Sumra, chief economist and the members of the Planning Commission (PC) and senior representatives from relevant federal ministries and provincial governments. These schools would be established in Balochistan's Kan Mehtarzai, costing Rs2,929.856 million; Sibi, costing Rs3,351.987 million; Baiker, Dera Bugti district, costing Rs2,665.733 million; Musakhel, costing Rs3,630.771 million; and Zhob, costing Rs3,632.405 million. The sixth approved Daanish schools would be established in AJK, costing Rs3,042.778 million. All these projects were cleated at the CDWP level, the Planning Minister stated in the statement. The Daanish Schools network is the largest system of free boarding schools for boys and girls in Pakistan, with a view to uplifting the most marginalised segments of the society by providing them access to the quality education. The Punjab government had earlier established a wide network of the Daanish schools, but now the other provinces are also taking steps to replicate this model to support talented students from underprivileged backgrounds. "The establishment of these schools represents a major step forward in addressing challenges faced by the education sector, especially in less developed areas," the ministry said. "The federal government also plans to establish new Daanish Schools in underserved districts," it added. "The initiative aims to empower youth, build stronger communities, and help create a more inclusive and equitable society. These schools will move beyond traditional rote learning, and promote 21st-century education models by integrating technology to improve delivery and track student progress." Speaking during the CDWP meeting, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal stated that more than 25 million children in Pakistan were currently out of school, which was a matter of serious national concern. He stressed that raising the literacy rate to 90% was essential for the country's development.
