Emma Navarro beats defending Wimbledon champ Barbora Krejcikova. There will be a first-time winner

LONDON (AP) -- Emma Navarro describes herself as "stubborn" and her tennis as "scrappy." The American's attitude and game both were in just the right places at Wimbledon on Saturday, when she pulled off another Grand Slam victory over a defending champion by eliminating Barbora Krejcikova 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Sending an ill and dizzy Krejcikova home in the third round, the 10th-seeded Navarro extended a recent run of one-and-done winners at the All England Club and assured the grass-court major of yet another first-time women's champion.
"Something I take a lot of pride in is being tough and fighting till the last point, no matter what the circumstances are. It's something I always try to do," said Navarro, who was born in New York, grew up in South Carolina and won the 2021 NCAA championship for the University of Virginia. "I could never live with myself if I ever gave up. It's just not in my nature. I don't think it's in any of my family members' nature to ever give up on anything. I guess we're a stubborn bunch."
Krejcikova faded in the third set, getting her blood pressure checked at the changeover after Navarro broke her to lead 3-2 at No. 1 Court. Krejcikova ate a banana and drank liquids during the medical timeout, while Navarro walked to her guest box and spoke to her coach during the break in action.
When play resumed, Krejcikova showed clear signs of being in distress, often leaning over and placing her hands on her knees between points.
"I was actually feeling worse and worse," said Krejcikova, who was seeded 17th but now will tumble out of the top 70 in the WTA rankings. "It's very sad for me and very unfortunate."
This is hardly Navarro's first big win on a big stage. Last year, she eliminated Coco Gauff at Wimbledon to reach her first major quarterfinal. Then, in a rematch a couple of months later, Navarro won again at the U.S. Open -- where Gauff was the 2023 champion -- en route to her debut in a Slam semifinal.
Whoever ends up winning the Wimbledon women's title on July 12 will be the ninth champion in the past nine editions of the grass-court Grand Slam tournament. Serena Williams was the last repeat champ in 2016.
The trophy-takers since then have been Garbine Muguruza in 2017, Angelique Kerber in 2018, Simona Halep in 2019, Ash Barty in 2021 -- all of whom are now retired -- Elena Rybakina in 2022, Marketa Vondrousova in 2023 and then Krejcikova (the tournament was canceled in 2020 because of COVID-19).
Rybakina lost Saturday; Vondrousova exited in the second round.
Against Krejcikova, Navarro was down a set and a break at 2-1 in the second before turning things around.
"I kind of regrouped a little, tried to slow things down a bit from my side and make her look at some different shots," said Navarro, 24, who will meet No. 7 Mirra Andreeva, an 18-year-old Russian, on Monday for a quarterfinal berth. "Kind of just try to make her as uncomfortable as I could."
Most points were decided by what Krejcikova did. That's how she ended up with 34 winners -- 21 more than Navarro -- and 53 unforced errors. Remarkably, Navarro finished with just 11 unforced errors.
Last year's triumph was the second at a major tournament for Krejcikova, who also won the 2021 French Open.
It has been a fortnight filled with surprises, and Navarro is one of four top-10 seeds left in the women's bracket. The others are No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who won her third-round match Friday against Emma Raducanu, Andreeva and No. 8 Iga Swiatek, a 6-2, 6-3 winner against Danielle Collins on Saturday.
"My slice is coming along pretty nicely. I'm able to use that to my advantage," Navarro said. "Played scrappy at times. Played tough. Hit some good groundstrokes, as well. I feel pretty good about where I'm at."

Shohei Ohtani greets Jacob Misiorowski with leadoff homer. Brewers phenom responds with 12 K's

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Shohei Ohtani greeted Jacob Misiorowski with a leadoff homer, but the Milwaukee Brewers' rookie phenom got the last word. After allowing Ohtani's 431-foot blast, Misiorowski responded with another dominant outing. He struck out a career-high 12 batters -- including two-way superstar Ohtani in the third inning -- to lead the Brewers to a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night. "It's Shohei Ohtani," Misiorowski said. "You kind of expect (that). It's cool to see him do it in action, but it fires me up even more coming back the next at bat and striking him out. I'm right there. I think it was a moment of like, 'OK, now we go.'" Misiorowski, whose fastball routinely tops 100 mph, threw an 88.2 mph curveball on an 0-2 count to Ohtani, who crushed it for his 31st homer. That's the most by a Dodgers player before the All-Star break. It was the 21st career leadoff homer for the three-time MVP, who struck out swinging on a curveball in the third and walked to start the sixth. That was the only free pass allowed by Misiorowski, who gave up four hits. "Really good stuff, aggressive in the zone," Ohtani said through an interpreter. "But what really stood out to me was his command and control." Misiorowski outdueled three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw, who surpassed 3,000 career strikeouts in his previous outing. Asked Monday about his matchup with Misiorowski, Kershaw said he only knew that the 6-foot-7 right-hander throws hard. "I know him now, huh?" Kershaw said Tuesday. "That was super impressive. That was unbelievable. It was really special. Everything. Obviously the velo, but he's got four pitches, commands the ball. I don't know how you hit that, honestly. That's just really tough." Misiorowski was glad to get Kershaw's attention. "I saw something online that he didn't now who I was, so I hope he knows me now," Misiorowski said. "It's kind of cool." In five starts since the Brewers called him up from the minors, Misiorowski has already beaten Kershaw and 2024 NL rookie of the year Paul Skenes. In another outing, Misiorowski carried a perfect game into the seventh inning. "He's just broken the shell," Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. "He's just out of the egg, all arms and legs. He's still got gooey stuff coming off, you can see it, all arms and legs, but there's something special about him." The numbers would indicate as much. Misiorowski is 4-1 with a 2.81 ERA and has allowed just 12 hits in 25 2/3 innings. He topped out at 101.6 mph and threw 20 pitches of at least 100 on Tuesday. He also threw 19 curveballs after using curves only 10% of the time before Tuesday. He was coming off his only shaky performance, allowing five runs -- including a grand slam by Brandon Nimmo -- and three walks over 3 2/3 innings Wednesday in a 7-3 loss to the New York Mets. It looked like it might be more of the same after Ohtani went deep. Misiorowski responded by striking out 12 of the next 16 batters. "I think that's my job, is to figure it out on the fly," he said. "I feel like I did it tonight." He got out of a jam in the sixth. The Dodgers trailed 2-1 and had runners on second and third with one out, but third baseman Andruw Monasterio fielded a grounder and threw out Ohtani at the plate, and Misiorowski retired Michael Conforto on a grounder. Misiorowski pumped his fist as he headed toward the dugout, then watched the Brewers' bullpen nail down the win.

Reds Lefty Andrew Abbott Named NL All-Star, Replacing Dodgers' Yamamoto

CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnati Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott is an All-Star after all. Abbott, who's 7-1 with a 2.15 ERA in 15 starts, was named as a replacement Tuesday for the Los Angeles Dodgers' Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who's ineligible to pitch since he's scheduled to start Sunday. It's the first All-Star nod for the 26-year-old Abbott, who was informed during Tuesday night's game against the Miami Marlins and high-fived and hugged teammates in the dugout. Shortstop Elly De La Cruz is Cincinnati's other All-Star. Abbott's ERA would be the fourth best in the majors if he had pitched enough innings to qualify. A pitcher must have at least one inning pitched per games played by his team. The Reds have played 92 games and Abbott has tossed 83 2/3 innings since making his season debut on April 12 after suffering a left shoulder strain in spring training.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Shohei Ohtani greeted Milwaukee Brewers rookie phenom Jacob Misiorowski with a 431-foot leadoff homer on Tuesday night. Misiorowski, whose fastball routinely tops 100 mph, threw an 88 mph curveball on an 0-2 count to the Los Angeles Dodgers' two-way superstar, who crushed it for his 31st homer of the season. That's the most by a Dodgers player before the All-Star break. It was the 21st career leadoff homer for Ohtani. Misiorowski bounced back to strike out the side, fanning Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Andy Pages. He also struck out the first two batters of the second inning before Dalton Rushing singled. Misiorowski was coming off his first shaky performance. After allowing three hits combined in his first three starts to begin his career 3-0, Misiorowski gave up five runs — including a grand slam to Brandon Nimmo — and three walks over 3 2/3 innings Wednesday in a 7-3 loss to the New York Mets.
