Big Bang Theory star lands role in thriller based on one of America's most notorious cults
The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons has boarded the cast of The Leader, a new true-crime drama based on the infamous Heaven's Gate cult The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons has signed up for a forthcoming true crime thriller centred on the infamous Heaven's Gate cult. Specifics about the sitcom favourite's character remain shrouded in mystery. Nevertheless, he'll be appearing alongside the previously confirmed Tim Blake Nelson and Vera Farmiga, who will portray UFO cult masterminds Marshall Herff Applewhite and Bonnie Lu Nettles. During Heaven's Gate's operations from 1974-1997, the organisation convinced hundreds of devotees to withdraw from mainstream society and desert their loved ones, driven by the conviction they would transcend their physical forms to achieve the 'Next Level'. Their doctrine reached its tragic conclusion when 39 individuals ended their lives in March 1997, including Applewhite, marking America's most devastating mass suicide to date, reports the Express. The supporting ensemble features Simon Rex, Grace Caroline Currey, Matthew Glave, William Mapother, JB Yowell, Kelly Lynn Reiter, Danielle Vasinova, Blake Robbins, Jana Gallagher, Paten Hughes, Molly Robbins, and Jill Winternitz. Dexter favourite Michael C Hall was also confirmed as part of the lineup shortly after The Leader was initially revealed at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2023. Leading man Nelson coincidentally played supervillain Samuel Sterns, also known as the Leader, in this year's Marvel spectacular Captain America: Brave New World. Writer-director Michael Gallagher commented on Parsons' casting: "Jim Parsons' mesmerizing, tour-de-force performance will leave audiences with their jaws on the floor. "We are beyond grateful to have Jim join our phenomenal cast of award-winning actors in this stunning dramatic turn." Beyond The Big Bang Theory, which wrapped up with its 12th series in 2019, Parsons has recently graced Broadway in the Tony-nominated Our Town. Here's what we drank at the Spirit of Wales distillery in Newport
The Spirit of Wales distillery located on the Maesglas Industrial Estate prides itself on being 'uniquely Newport.' Trays of drinks at the Spirit of Wales distillery (Image: NQ) Run by a small team of six the distillery's spirit tasting nights offers visitors a chance to sample some of their award winning locally produced drinks. Their website reads: 'Inspired by the landscapes, people, and the industry surrounding us, we invite you on a flavour journey that pays tribute to the Welsh passion.' Here's what was up for grabs when we went to one of their tasting sessions on a Friday night. We arrived at the distillery bang on 7pm and soon enough the vodka was cracked open. However, this wasn't just any vodka this was their special 'Steeltown' vodka. A Steeltown Vodka shot at the Spirit of Wales distillery (Image: NQ) The 40% proof vodka was served chilled straight in a shot glass so consumers could see if it agreed with their palette. According to our host the vodka's taste differs based on the temperature it's served at. Our shot was paired with a mixer of choice lemonade or coke. The majority of the tasters selected coke. This, in my opinion, went down much smoother for my palette. Dragons' Breath rum at the Spirit of Wales distillery (Image: NQ) Another memorable drink that was served was the distillery's famed 'Dragons Breath' rum. Weighing in at a whopping 49% proof, the rum contained at least 40 botanicals. Ingredients like black pepper, honey, lime coconut and paprika gave the drink a fiery taste. Tasters enjoyed the rum with ginger beer to enhance its naturally warm flavours which was well received. Another crowd pleaser was the distillery's Steeltown Welsh Dry Gin. At 43% proof tasters enjoyed the combination of sparky fresh lemon peel aromas mixed with orris root and rosemary. Steeltown Gin at the Spirit of Wales distillery (Image: NQ) The gin was served in a shot glass chilled and tasters had the option to request tonic or lemonade. Alongside this many refillable shots were up for grabs. Strawberry whiskey, coffee liqueur and raspberry and passionfruit shots The tasting session officially came to a close at 9pm. At £20 per person for a night of bubbly entertainment and merry drinking what's not the love?

I tried a silent disco tour through Newport at Big Splash
When I saw the words 'Silent Disco City Tour' in the festival programme my interest was immediately piqued, and I couldn't help myself from going to see exactly what those words meant. On arrival at The Place, where the tour would start and finish, a cart of headphones are wheeled out and we each receive a pair – standard practice for a silent disco. Passers-by were left a little perplexed (Image: NQ) We then embark on our journey through Newport city centre, spurred on by the sounds of Gloria Estefan's 'Conga' as we round the corner onto Cambrian Road. The punters enjoying the sun and a pint outside Fire & Ice are understandably perplexed. This is a place is where nothing is out of the ordinary, but a herd of people walking down the street salsa dancing feels a little odd – even for Newport. We take a sharp turn down into the arcade and make our way toward some of the city centre landmarks. Walking through a bustling Friar's Walk while belting out Dolly Parton is not for the faint of heart, but we're told to just 'strut with confidence' and, strangely, the advice works. During a session earlier in the day, passers-by were joining in with the YMCA – no music needed. Katy Arnell, who helps lead the tour, said: 'People always like to see other people not take themselves too seriously. 'There's a human connection in this and, even though people can't hear the music, it starts to act as collective karaoke." There are not many other tours through Newport that would attract such a vast range of people. This one event has anyone from 4-year-olds who are obsessed with Katy's infectious energy and her incredibly sparkly jacket, to an 80-year-old on a mobility scooter taking part. This simple concept has managed to bring so many people together and create a sense of community – all while bewildering the people of Newport.
