Think you can spot a deepfake? Most Singaporeans can't, survey reveals

SINGAPORE, July 2 — Just one in four people here could correctly identify deepfake videos, despite nearly 80 per cent expressing confidence in spotting them.
This finding comes from the Cybersecurity Awareness Survey 2024, released on July 2 by the Cyber Security Agency (CSA) of Singapore, The Straits Times reported.
The survey introduced deepfake-related questions for the first time, in response to growing use of generative artificial intelligence to create convincing fake content.
Conducted in October 2024, the survey polled 1,050 respondents aged 15 and above on topics including cyber hygiene, cyber incidents, and mobile security.
Most respondents cited visual clues like unsynchronised lip movements and suspicious content as ways to detect deepfakes, but only a quarter passed a practical test.
'With cyber criminals constantly devising new scam tactics, we need to be vigilant, and make it harder for them to scam us,' CSA chief executive David Koh was quoted saying.
While awareness of phishing increased compared to 2022, the ability to accurately identify phishing messages fell to 13 per cent from 24 per cent.
Cybersecurity habits have improved, with 63 per cent using security apps and 41 per cent enabling two-factor authentication, but perceived risks of scams and malware have declined slightly since 2022.

Steven Sim (pic) shared a personal experience from the previous day, when he came across a seemingly genuine comment generated by AI on his Facebook post. The comment, tailored to the original content, urged readers to click on a link, which led to a scam site. 'This is the latest evolution. It shows how AI is being misused to manipulate people in increasingly convincing ways. 'AI is an opportunity for new growth. However, while it can enhance productivity in the workplace, it also brings the potential to aid criminal activity – for instance, among scammers,' he said during a speech at the Workshop on Empowe­ring Job Seekers: Digital Platform Best Practices from OIC Member Countries yesterday. Meanwhile, PERKESO chairman Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal also highlighted the growing threat of job scams that exploit job seekers and undermine public trust in digital employment platforms. 'Combating such fraudulent practices requires a coordinated approach involving strong cybersecurity measures, public awareness campaigns, verification mechanisms and timely enforcement. 'Through robust cooperation and the exchange of best practices, tools and strategies, OIC Public Employ­ment Service Network (OIC-Pesnet) member countries can more effectively combat job scams. 'This collaborative effort will secure our labour markets, protect our citizens, and maintain the integrity of our employment systems,' he added. Sim also cited a study by the Human Resources Ministry releas­ed late last year, which found that up to 600,000 jobs in Malaysia could be affec­ted by AI over the next three to five years. 'The same report also indicates that hundreds of thousands of new jobs will be created through the AI revolution. Some of these roles are no longer just projections – they are already being advertised,' he said. He added that AI and digital tools must be incorporated into public employment services – not only to improve service delivery but also to raise awareness of the associated risks. Sim said that the government had recently agreed to amend legislation to enhance the role of PERKESO as a key provider of public employment services. A cornerstone of this effort is the MyFutureJobs portal, launch­ed in 2020, which uses AI to facilitate efficient job matching and provides personalised recruitment services to both employers and job seekers. On average, the portal offers between 1.5 million and two million job vacancies annually, registers around 500,000 job seekers, and achieves a placement rate of 60% to 70% each year. Sim said MyFutureJobs is a leading example of digital employment services among Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member countries. From January to May this year, MyFutureJobs recorded 111,459 registered job seekers, over 633,000 job vacancies advertised, and more than 74,000 individuals successfully placed into employment. The two-day workshop, held in Kuala Lumpur and hosted by PERKESO, brought together public sector employment service leaders from OIC countries to explore digital innovations in addressing youth unemployment, skills mismatches, and workforce participation challenges. Key topics included AI-driven career guidance, the evolution of job portals, and strategies to tackle online job scams.

MDEC launches two grants totalling RM2.9m to accelerate digital transformation in AI and manufacturing sectors

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) is introducing two grants totalling RM2.9 million aimed at accelerating digital transformation in two of Malaysia's most strategic sectors – artificial intelligence (AI) and manufacturing. Eligibility for these grants is exclusively extended to companies possessing Malaysia Digital (MD) or MSC Malaysia status, or to those with a pending MD status application at the time of applying for the grant. The two new grants – the Malaysia Digital Acceleration Grant – Artificial Intelligence (MDAG-AI) and the SmartMFG+ Incentive Programme – are designed to support high-potential local companies by promoting innovation, developing export-ready digital solutions and creating high-skilled employment opportunities. MDEC CEO Anuar Fariz Fadzil described the grants as both timely and strategic, giving a significant boost to Malaysia's digital transformation agenda. 'MDAG-AI establishes a foundational framework for Malaysia to emerge as a preeminent hub for AI innovation, while SmartMFG+ lays the groundwork for widespread digitalisation across the manufacturing industry. Collectively, these initiatives serve as a dual engine to advance our digital ambitions,' said Anuar. The MDAG-AI grant is specifically designed to support Malaysian digital companies in the commercialisation of AI solutions. It targets high-impact projects that correspond with the national AI investment strategy, focusing on companies with capabilities across the foundational, enabling, and application layers of AI. This initiative builds upon the momentum generated by prior programmes, concentrating on AI product commercialisation, cross-sector AI application, talent development and knowledge transfer. It is strategically aligned with the National AI Roadmap, reinforcing Eligible companies may apply for funding of up to 70% of total project costs, capped at RM2 million, for projects spanning a duration of up to one year. Application is now open till July 18 and successful applicants will be announced at the Malaysia Digital Expo (MDX) in September.
