Maradona had been recovering at his home in Buenos Aires from brain surgery for a blood clot in November 2020 when he died of a heart attack, aged 60.Among the medical team on trial are a neurosurgeon, a doctor and a night nurse. They claim the retired footballer refused further treatment and should have stayed at home for longer after his operation. If convicted, they face between eight and 25 years in prison.Earlier this week, Prosecutor Patricio Ferrari accused Makintach of behaving "like an actress and not a judge" after she took part in a documentary about the case.As a trailer for the documentary series, called Divine Justice, was played in court, defence lawyer Rodolfo Baque shouted "trash!" at Makintach.Maradona's daughter Gianinna and his former partner Veronica Ojeda both cried after seeing the footage.It is a violation of court rules for unauthorised filming to take place and the documentary was being filmed without the permission of the court.Following criticism for taking part in the show, Makintach said she had "no choice" but to excuse herself from the case.The trial was then adjourned pending the decision on Thursday, which ultimately was to declare a mistrial.Since beginning, the trial had heard the testimony of almost 50 witnesses, including Maradona's daughters.The date for the new trial was not initially set and new judges were not nominated.

The United States has intensified its campaign to help Jair Bolsonaro avoid punishment for allegedly masterminding a failed coup, with the state department denouncing the decision to place Brazil's former president under house arrest. 'Let Bolsonaro speak!' the department's bureau of western hemisphere affairs tweeted on Monday night after the far-right populist was confined to his mansion in the capital, Brasília, and had his mobile phone seized by police. Trump wrote in a letter to Lula earlier this month calling Bolsonaro's treatment 'an international disgrace'. After Bolsonaro's house arrest on Monday, the state department hinted that other members of Brazil's 11-seat supreme court could soon face Magnitsky sanctions, which are normally used to punish the perpetrators of major human rights violations. 'The United States condemns Moraes' order imposing house arrest on Bolsonaro and will hold accountable all those aiding and abetting sanctioned conduct,' it said. Trump's attempt to interfere in Brazil's justice system has outraged progressive Brazilians who decry what they see as a flagrant violation of their country's sovereignty. Lenildo Mendes dos Santos Sertão, a brawny Amazonian congressman who goes by the nickname Delegado Caveira ('Police chief Skull'), said he still believed Bolsonaro's political future could still be salvaged. 'I spoke with him yesterday. He's very shaken. Very downcast. But he's a soldier and he is in the trenches and at the right time he will come out and we really believe that he will be our candidate in the presidential election,' Caveira said, as he marched towards the entrance to the compound Bolsonaro can no longer leave. A former rival of Tom Brady 's has been tapped to call YouTube 's first exclusive NFL game. The company will broadcast the season opener between the Chiefs and Chargers on September 5 in Brazil. And as reported by The Athletic, ex-NFL star Kurt Warner will be the lead analyst for the game. YouTube is still searching for a play-by-play man for its broadcast of the contest, which will take place at Corinthians Arena. Nonetheless, it should be an exciting assignment for Warner, who also calls games for Westwood One Radio and NFL Network. The former Rams and Cardinals star was in the NFL for 10 seasons alongside Brady, who bested him in Super Bowl XXXVI as the Patriots beat St. Louis' 'Greatest Show on Turf.' While Warner tossed 365 yards in the game (compared to Brady's 145 yards and a touchdown), it was the Patriots who won 20-17. Warner ultimately retired following the 2009 season with one Super Bowl ring and two MVPs before getting inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017. He's been on a staple on NFL Network since he hung up his cleats, while Brady - who only retired for good in 2023 - joined his fellow ex-passer in the broadcasting ranks last year. After signing a 10-year, $375million deal with Fox Sports, Brady served as the network's lead NFL game analyst and ultimately helped call the Eagles win over the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV. The Athletic reported previously that top networks were hesitant to allow streamers (including Netflix) to use their talent. However, CBS' Matt Ryan and Nate Burleson are said to be under consideration for Netflix's Christmas doubleheader. Another one of Brady's contemporaries, Drew Brees, has also been tapped by Netflix for one of those Christmas games.

West Ham close in on surprise deal for new goalkeeper amid Alphonse Areola concerns
West Ham are close to agreeing a deal with Brazilian side Botafogo for goalkeeper John Victor. The 29-year-old emerged as a surprise target for Graham Potter 's side with the club pursuing deals for Leicester's Mads Hermansen and Japan international Zion Suzuki. West Ham have already had two bids rejected but are now said to be close to agreeing a fee around £10million, around the price of his release clause. The Hammers have been in the hunt for a new goalkeeper all summer following the departure of veteran stopper Lukasz Fabianski and concerns over Alphonse Areola 's ability to be the club's No 1 following a string of errors at the end of last season and during the club's Summer Series campaign. Potter's recruitment team led by Kyle Macauley had identified Hermansen and Suzuki as their top targets. Hermansen seemed a natural fit, having been brought through at Danish side Brondby by new goalkeeping coach Casper Ankergren, but the Hammers are believed to have been able to yet reach Leicester's valuation for the Denmark youth international. Victor played a key role in helping Botafogo lift the Copa Libertadores and win the Brazilian league for the first time in 2024 and featured at the Club World Cup. Botafogo already have their replacement lined up, having agreed a deal to sign Bournemouth keeper Neto. Victor had been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer but could now become Potter's fourth new signing of the summer following the arrivals of El Hadji Malick Diouf, Kyle Walker-Peters and Callum Wilson. Following Wilson's arrival, Potter confirmed that Michail Antonio has no future at West Ham. The club had offered Antonio a short-term deal but the striker felt he could gain better terms elsewhere. West Ham will still allow their all-time Premier League goal scorer to train with club's under-21s to maintain his fitness after he returned to action for Jamaica this summer following his car crash last December. 'We're in a position where we're making sure we at least provide Michail with the option to train with the under 21s, to keep his team training up, to make sure he's at the next stage of his rehab,' said Potter. 'Then it's up to me to see where the next part of his career goes. He can still play of course. No, he's not going to play for West Ham, that's basically the point. We're in the process of speaking about what he wants to do in the future, so I wouldn't want to say too much. If anything, it will be a role, maybe looking at with the 21s, coaching, mentoring, that type of thing. But again, that will be up to him.'
