Rahul Gandhi to visit Patna, join protests against electoral rolls revision

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will be in Patna on Wednesday for a "chakka jam" against the new labour code and special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, leaders of the INDIA bloc said.
The announcement was made on Monday at a press conference, which was attended by Leader of the Opposition in the assembly Tejashwi Yadav, state Congress president Rajesh Kumar, AICC in charge for Bihar Krishna Allavaru, and leaders of Left parties.
Kumar said Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, will join the protesters in the state capital, where a march has been proposed to the office of the Election Commission.
Yadav said, "We will be with Gandhi in Patna, but the stir will be held across Bihar. We are extending support to the chakka jam against the labour code which is as much an assault on democracy as the revision of electoral rolls." He also alleged that the special intensive revision, which will be complete in less than a month from now, has so far been mired in "confusion" and accused the EC of trying to help the ruling BJP-led NDA through the exercise.

AIMIM signals readiness to ‘contest alone'
New Delhi: Amid rising political activity ahead of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, AIMIM's state unit president Akhtarul Iman said on Monday that while his party was open to joining the Grand Alliance (Mahagathbandhan), it was fully prepared to contest alone, if excluded. This statement comes as AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi expressed interest in aligning with the opposition bloc to take on the ruling BJP-led NDA in Bihar. However, the response from the Grand Alliance has been lukewarm so far. RJD MP Manoj Jha recently suggested that the AIMIM should stay out of the elections and instead offer 'in-principle' support to the Mahagathbandhan. But for the sake of Bihar's people, for secularism and law and order, we are willing to collaborate. Democracy is shrinking. Businessmen are being murdered in broad daylight, girls are unsafe, and mob lynchings are happening. It's essential to unite against these challenges.' Responding to Manoj Jha's comment that the AIMIM should stay out of the race, Iman said: 'If Manoj Jha wants to give advice, he can do so as a professor. Being an MP isn't required for that. We haven't sent a letter to him; we sent it to Lalu Prasad Yadav, who, along with Tejashwi Yadav, holds the authority to decide on alliance matters. I don't consider others authorised to speak on this issue and prefer not to comment further.' Iman also reacted to the ongoing controversy over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. The process, led by the Election Commission of India (ECI), has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition, including the Congress, which alleges that it is a ploy by the BJP to disenfranchise marginalised voters. The AIMIM echoed these concerns, warning that the revision process could unfairly target the underprivileged and illiterate. All-party Tibet forum co-chair seeks global recognition for Dalai Lama's institution
New Delhi: Asenior functionary of the All Party Indian Parliamentary Forum for Tibet, a cross-party group of MPs, on Monday called for global recognition of the institution of Dalai Lalai and its right to choose his successor amid China's claim that it has the sole right to approve his heir. BJP MP Tapir Gao, a third-term Lok Sabha member from Arunachal East, noted that the Forum had, in its previous meetings, the last being in March this year, demanded Bharat Ratna for the Dalai Lama, whose 90th birthday was celebrated on July 6. 'The institution of the Dalai Lama is rooted in religious and cultural traditions of Tibetan Buddhists. China has absolutely no role in the matter. The world should recognise it,' said Gao, the co-convenor of the Forum. The forum members include MPs from different parties, including the BJP, Congress and the Trinamool Congress, and over 80 of them were signatories to the demand that the Dalai Lama should be conferred India's highest civilian award. Gao noted that he has raised the demand in the Lok Sabha in recognition of the Dalai Lama's dedication to peace, compassion, humanity and universal brotherhood. The Dalai Lama, the spiritual and temporal head of Tibetan Buddhists, had earlier said that the institution will continue and only its trust will have the authority to recognise the future reincarnation, who will succeed him. The Gaden Phodrang Trust was founded by the Office of Dalai Lama in 2015. China has, though, insisted that only it has the sole authority to recognise the successor. Thousands gathered in the main courtyard of Tsuglagkhang, the Dalai Lama temple, on Sunday to celebrate the 90th birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama, while greetings poured from across the world for the Tibetan spiritual leader.
