CoinDCX hit by $44.2 mn security breach; founders say customer funds unaffected, safe

Indian cryptocurrency exchange CoinDCX has suffered a security breach, resulting in theft of $44.2 million, or ₹378 crore, even as the founders took to X to reassure that customer funds remained unaffected and safe, with the compromise limited to an internal operational account. The total exposure is being absorbed entirely by CoinDCX, using the company's treasury reserves, the company said in a First Incident Report released on Sunday. According to the report, on July 19, at 4 a.m., CoinDCX security systems detected an incident involving unauthorised access to one of its accounts on the partner exchange, leading to a financial exposure of about $44 million. The incident once again puts the spotlight on mounting security threats in the highly volatile world of cryptocurrencies. Last year, crypto exchange WazirX faced a hack in India, leading to the loss of more than $230 million, and marking one of the biggest such heists in India. The theft had prompted a thorough examination of safety measures and eroded sentiments. CoinDCX co-founders Sumit Gupta and Neeraj Khandelwal took to the social media platform X to address the situation, confirming that the attack was the result of a sophisticated server breach, targeting an internal wallet, not the ones holding customer assets. The incident was first flagged by blockchain investigator ZachXBT, following which the exchange made the disclosure public. "Today, one of our internal operational accounts -- used only for liquidity provisioning on a partner exchange -- was compromised due to a sophisticated server breach. I confirm that the CoinDCX wallets used to store customer assets are not impacted and are completely safe. This won't cause any loss to our customers. CoinDCX will be bearing the full amount," Mr. Gupta said. "The total amount lost was USD 44Mn out of our treasury assets. Coindcx Treasury will be bearing these losses," Mr. Khandelwal wrote. Following this, users rushed to check their balances, leading to a spike in withdrawal requests. The sudden surge in activity led to CoinDCX's portfolio APIs, which display user balances and transaction histories, becoming jammed and unresponsive. For several hours, many were unable to even see their holdings on the app, adding fuel to rumours and anxiety online. The co-founders later updated that Portfolio APIs have been restored. Affected infrastructure has been completely isolated, and CoinDCX operations continue to run normally, the company said. CERT-In, or the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, has been informed about the incident. Detailed forensics with two globally reputed security agencies is being carried out, and reports will be shared for public benefit, it added. "CoinDCX services remain fully operational. Trading activity, INR deposits and INR withdrawals continue. INR withdrawals below Rs 5 lakhs will reflect in your account within 5 hours, while withdrawals above Rs 5 lakhs will be processed within 72 hours. The incident was isolated and has no impact on your portfolio access or operations," the company stated. Social media is flooded with mixed reactions. While some praised CoinDCX for absorbing the losses and protecting user funds, others criticised the delay in public disclosure and raised concerns over the broader security of crypto platforms in India. "Coindcx silent for 17 hours? That's more suspense than a thriller! In crypto, transparency isn't optional; it's key. Stay open to keep trust alive!" a user wrote. "Good to see CoinDCX acting responsibly, assuring user funds are safe, and not passing losses onto customers. Sets a positive precedent for Indian crypto exchanges," another said.

JDA yet to complete ROB, railway plans new project

1 2 Jaipur: At a time when the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) is yet to complete the construction of barely 700 metre long Civil Lines Railway Overbridge (ROB), there are plans to construct another ROB connecting Bani Park and Hasanpura sides of the railway station. Although experts are apprehensive about major chaos along the railway station if both constructions continue simultaneously on both sides of the Ajmer Road Puliya, JDA officials have claimed that they are trying their best to complete the construction of the Civil Lines RoB before the construction work for the proposed RoB starts. "We set a revised deadline of Dec this year to complete the construction of Civil Lines ROB. Even if we miss the deadline, we are hopeful to complete the Civil Lines ROB before railways start the construction work for the proposed ROB. It would take a few more months to commence the construction of the proposed ROB," stated a JDA official. Officials of the civic body made it clear that North Western Railway (NWR) would construct this proposed ROB connecting Ram Mandir on Bani Park side and Jal Mahal Chouraha in Hasanpura. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo JDA and PWD would only help the railways to allocate lands on the Bani Park side near the Ram Mandir. On the Hasanpura side, railways would utilise lands of its own colony. Recently, during a Projects Work Committee meeting of JDA, the civic body sanctioned the GAD (General Arrangement Drawing) of the project, giving its approval to railways to construct the ROB. "Earlier, there were plans to construct an underpass jointly by the railways and the public works department (PWD). But in the feasibility report, it was mentioned that an underpass is not viable. So, now it has been decided to construct a ROB instead," said an official. This would be the fifth means to cross the railway line within a stretch of around 4km between the Bais Godam and Bani Park Ram Mandir. Out of the remaining four, the Civil Lines flyover, the Ajmer Road Puliya and the Railway Station Puliya (connecting the ITC Rajputana Hotel and Jal Mahal Chouraha) are already operational. JDA is constructing the ROB at the Civil Lines Phatak. "The Hasanpura side of the railway junction is getting a major facelift. Once the renovation work is over, a huge footfall of passengers is expected on the Hasanpura side of the railway station. This proposed ROB can reduce traffic pressure on the Railway Station Puliya to a great extent," said a PWD official.

Autorickshaw rush at new Trichy bus terminus leaves drivers waiting for hours

Trichy: The newly commissioned Kalaignar Karunanidhi Bus Terminus (KKBT) in Panjapur is facing an unexpected problem — overcrowding by autorickshaws. Around 550 three-wheelers have flooded the premises, far exceeding demand and forcing many drivers to wait 5-6 hours for their first ride of the day. Instead of streamlining fares, the glut of autos and poor passenger demand have led to overcharging in some cases. While 250 autorickshaws from the Central Bus Terminus were allocated space at KKBT's front entrance, another 300 from nearby areas like E Pudur and Crawford were directed to the rear entrance. "Autorickshaw unions from across the city approach us daily for space at KKBT. Though we cannot deny them outright, the overcrowding is making business unsustainable," a senior corporation official said. Authorities have clarified that no auto stands will be permitted within the terminus itself. For now, drivers park in long queues outside both entrances. However, with the terminus well-connected by city buses to Central and Chathiram bus stands, many solo travellers and low-income passengers prefer public transport. Families often disembark at stops like Mannarpuram or TVS Tollgate to reach the city core, further reducing demand for autos at Panjapur. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo "I waited six hours for my first ride today. Many inexperienced drivers have also taken slots here and are overcharging passengers," said R Murugesan, an AITUC-backed auto driver. The queue system further delays subsequent rides, prompting some drivers to overcharge by ₹100-₹150 just to make ends meet. Fares to places like the airport or Srirangam can touch ₹600-₹700, depending on passenger urgency. "The district administration should introduce pre-booked auto services through apps or counters to regulate fares. Unscrupulous drivers could tarnish the reputation of the new terminus," warned consumer rights activist H Ghouse Baig. Authorities expect that some autos may leave the terminus voluntarily as poor demand persists. Meanwhile, RTO officials said no formal complaints about fare fleecing have been received so far.
