Pierce County police chief who ‘built lasting trust within the community' set to retire
Overseeing a department of 24 commissioned officers and three administrative staff, Busey stepped into the role of chief in 2014. He started out as an entry-level police officer for the Gig Harbor Police Department in 1991 after working for the Coast Guard, according to the release.
'Chief Busey has been an exemplary leader, providing steadfast service and commitment to the safety of our residents,' Mayor Mary Barber said in the release. 'His leadership has strengthened our Police Department and built lasting trust within the community.'
According to the release, Busey's contributed his expertise in investigations, marine-services operations and communications to the department. The city also thanked him for his 'leadership, operational planning, management, technical writing, and crisis communications.'
Under Busey's leadership, the Gig Harbor Police Department became accredited by the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs on March 18 after an 18-month process, according to a city department update. According to the WASPC website, accreditation is an optional distinction that shows an agency is following 'industry best practices and standards,' focusing on 18 different areas, including use of force, personnel management, records management, information technology, health and safety, fiscal management and more. The process culminates with an on-site inspection.
'Our department learned about ourselves and improved in certain areas,' Busey wrote in the city newsletter March 19. 'It was also good to know that we have largely been doing things the proper way even before the process started ... Most importantly, our residents and businesses can be assured that we are doing our job in an efficient, legal, and transparent manner.'
The department will receive an accreditation certificate in May, according to the city newsletter.
Busey also oversaw the launch of the department's Business Check program in 2021 to help curb retail theft in Gig Harbor, The News Tribune reported. Larceny-theft offenses were the city's top crime incident in 2023, at 26.8 incidents per 1,000 people, according to the most recent statewide crime report from the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs. The program gave retail store employees a way to call police for a 'Business Check' if they noticed suspicious activity, without having to confirm whether someone was shoplifting and risk making a false accusation.
More recently, Busey explored the option of contracting with Flock Safety to install 10 automated license-plate readers in Gig Harbor after he learned a City Council member was interested in what technologies the department could leverage. He also led the department in securing a grant from the Washington Auto Theft Prevention Authority to pay for the cameras' installation and one year of operation. The cameras don't issue speeding tickets but help law enforcement agencies more easily track stolen vehicles, locate missing people and solve other crimes. Busey made a formal presentation to the council Monday, but the council voted against a contract with Flock following several residents' public comments opposing it, The News Tribune reported.
The city is planning a retirement reception for Busey near the end of June and will release the date and other details soon, the release said.

Prosecutors have since dismissed the other charges. The actor was "overcharged" by county prosecutors due to his "celebrity status," Zwillman said, adding that his client should have faced a lower-level charge such as a disorderly persons offense for harassment. USA TODAY has reached out to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office for comment. Busey was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Buddy Holly in 1978's "The Buddy Holly Story." Aside from his film credits, which include "Point Break" and "Lethal Weapon," he's also forayed into reality television. In 2014, he won Season 14 of the U.K. show "Celebrity Big Brother." Busey also competed on Season 21 of "Dancing with the Stars" and in 2011 on "The Apprentice." In 2023, Busey was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run collision in Malibu. According to Entertainment Weekly, the unidentified woman whose car he collided with did not press charges against the actor.

Actor Gary Busey pleads guilty to sex crime
Gary Busey has pleaded guilty to sex crimes charge. The actor has pleaded guilty to a criminal sexual contact charge relating to an incident at the Monster Mania horror film convention in New Jersey in 2022. During a virtual court hearing, the 81-year-old actor, who has appeared in films including Point Break and Lethal Weapon, admitted to inappropriately touching a woman on 13 August 2022. This plea follows the judge's rejection of Busey's motion to dismiss the indictment. "It was not an accidental touching," Busey told the judge during the hearing, according to the Daily News. The incident occurred at the Monster Mania Convention at the Doubletree Hotel in Cherry Hill between 12 and 14 August 2022. The Rookie of the Year actor was accused of inappropriately touching at least three women while posing for photos with fans at the event. One woman alleged that he tried to undo her bra. Busey denied the allegations at the time. He previously told TMZ that he doesn't "carry any regrets" because "nothing happened". "It took less than 10 seconds and they left," he claimed. "Then they made up a story that I assaulted them sexually." He added, "It was all false." In a 2022 Facebook post, the organisers of the annual event stated that the actor had been "removed from the convention and instructed not to return" after receiving at least one complaint. Busey was initially charged with two counts of criminal sexual contact, one count of attempted criminal sexual contact, and one count of harassment. However, three of these charges were dropped on Thursday as part of a plea agreement. His sentencing is currently scheduled for 18 September.

‘Heartbroken beyond words.' Family of girl killed in sailboat crash speaks out
The family of 13-year-old Erin Ko, who was killed when a barge slammed into a sailboat of summer campers in Biscayne Bay on Monday, thanked the community for its support during what they call an 'unimaginably difficult time.' Erin was among five girls and a camp counselor aboard a 17-foot Hobie Getaway, part of a Miami Yacht Club summer camp program teaching children to sail, when it was hit by a 60-foot barge being pushed by a tugboat. The impact of the crash, which happened around 11 a.m. Monday, caused the boat to capsize. The accident also claimed the life of 7-year-old Mila Yankelevich, the granddaughter of well-known Argentine television producers Cris Morena and Gustavo Yankelevich. Mila and her parents, also prominent in the arts, had moved to South Florida. They shared a selection of photos commemorating Erin's life and said they hope, in time, to speak more about who she was and the joy she brought to those around her. Erin attended Colegio San Pedro Nolasco de Vitacura in a province of Santiago until her family moved to South Florida in December. In a statement released Wednesday, the school remembered Erin as a kind, gifted student who 'left an indelible mark' on their community. Erin excelled academically, especially in math, the school noted. She was on the volleyball team and participated in trapeze. 'Her friendliness and personality allowed her to interact with students at different levels, whether through her participation in extracurricular activities or through the family ties that united her with classmates from other classes,' the school wrote. A memorial Mass was held Thursday in Chile, where Erin's former classmates and relatives gathered to remember her. In a video shared by the school, students formed a circle and released white balloons in her honor. 'While she was here, she was a light for us, for our school, ' the Chilean school's elementary school director Francisca Aburto told Miami Herald news partner CBS Miami. 'Erin left a mark that's indelible. So that's very important for us to pass that on. 'For me, I also taught Erin before taking over as principal. I was her teacher in fifth grade, and in sixth grade. It was a wonderful experience…' Erin also had attended Nautilus Middle School in Miami Beach, Local 10 reported. The Miami-Dade school district confirmed Friday she was a student at one of its schools. The collision occurred near Hibiscus and Monument Islands off Miami Beach. Two other campers, ages 8 and 11, were critically injured and rushed to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, officials say. The 19-year-old camp counselor and a 12-year-old girl were treated at the scene.
