Former Moses Lake pianist receives Finnish knighthood
Collin Hansen, a 1975 graduate of Moses Lake High School, was awarded the Order of the Lion of Finland at a ceremony March 18.
"It's an honor that every year ... the president (of Finland) awards certain members of society," Hansen said. "(It) was for my contribution to Finnish musical life and also, in my work at the university, helping a younger generation of musicians in Finland."
Hansen, a highly-accomplished pianist specializing in chamber and vocal music, studied at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., and then took a master's degree at the prestigious Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, according to the committee that awarded him the honor. He has taught at the Sibelius Academy since 1987.
"His inspiring student- and composition-oriented teaching has inspired entire generations of Finnish pianists, both at the Sibelius Academy and in numerous summer courses, to become enthusiastic about music," the committee wrote.
Hansen's talent became obvious at an early age, according to his mother, Vonnie Hansen, who lives in Moses Lake.
"From the time he could walk, he got up to the piano and touched the keys," Vonnie Hansen said. "By the time he was 4 years old, he was playing his Sunday school songs by ear. He started taking piano lessons in the first grade."
The Order of the Lion of Finland was created in 1942 to recognize outstanding civilian or military conduct, according to the Finnish government's website.
In addition to his teaching, Hansen is also the creative director of the LuomuLaulu, or Time of Music, Festival in Viitasaari, Finland.
"We do concerts in granaries and barns, chamber music and lots of vocal music," he said. "We have massive classes and students come and live in people's guest houses. Central Finland is absolutely wonderful; it's a pristine part of the country on a lake. We've had famous opera singers and chamber musicians come. It's absolutely wonderful."

Thousands defy rain to celebrate Pride festival
Thousands of people defied the downpours to take part in Leeds Pride this weekend. The vibrant annual festival, which celebrates LGBTQ+ life, was held in the city centre on Sunday. Despite the miserable weather, there were smiles everywhere as huge numbers turned out to watch the parade make its way across The Headrow amid a party atmosphere. Several people who attended claimed Leeds had one of the best Pride festivals. One woman, who went to the celebration with her partner and her partner's daughter, said: "Leeds Pride is one of my favourite Prides and I've been to a lot of them. "I like the family feel about this place. It keeps me coming back every year and I'm really excited to be here. "Despite the rain the atmosphere feels like it's buzzing." Pride's distinctive rainbow colours, music, dancing and drag queens all formed part of the fun at the festival, which was first held in Leeds in 2006. Another woman who attended said: "My son came out as gay one-and-a-half years ago, so I wanted to be here for him and to celebrate equality for everyone. "It's amazing. I'm absolutely loving it!" Nazir Uddin, who is originally from Bangladesh, said he had to hide his sexuality until he came to the UK. He said: "It is illegal to be homosexual in my country. "It's not just Bangladesh, there are still 64 countries where it's still illegal, so I'm here to represent all of those who are still hiding their sexuality. "I never experienced this (Pride) back home, so it's like heaven for me and I feel very safe here." Motorway shut for mass biker charity ride-out
Thousands of bikers have taken part in a ride-out on Shropshire roads to raise money for charity. The convoy set off on a 26-mile route from Meole Brace, in Shrewsbury, at 10:30 BST on Sunday as part of the Bike4Life Ride Out and Festival. About 3,500 riders drove in convoy along stretches of motorway that had been closed for the event, to reach the festival site at Weston Park on the Shropshire-Staffordshire border, organisers said. Former World Superbike champion Carl Fogarty is attending the festival, which aims to raise money for the Midlands Air Ambulance charity. The ride-out followed the A5, M54 and A41 to the event's home at Weston Park, with the A5 and M54 shut to other drivers for a time. Highways agencies had previously advised motorists to avoid travelling at the same time and allow extra time around related traffic restrictions. The road closures have since been lifted. Visitors to Weston Park have been promised celebrity guest appearances, live music, food and stunt shows. Among celebrities expected to attend are Bez from the Happy Mondays and former professional motorcycle racer James Whitham. Follow BBC Shropshire on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram.
