Majors-best Tigers end 6-game skid with All-Star Tarik Skubal's strong start
The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and starter in
Tuesday's All-Star Game
cruised into the seventh inning with a two-hit shutout and a tenuous 1-0 lead. He left with runners at the corners and two outs, and the Rangers' Adolis García scored on a wild pitch by Tyler Holton.
But Detroit's Matt Vierling hit a tiebreaking single with two outs in the eighth inning, and Will Vest entered in the eighth and got four straight outs — against the top four batters in Texas' order — for his 16th save for the Tigers (60-40).
Skubal left the park still with 10 wins (one shy of the AL lead), 164 strikeouts (one behind Boston's Garrett Crochet) and a 2.19 ERA (tied with Crochet for the best in the American League).
'We're the first to 60, right? That matters more (than his personal stats),' Skubal said. 'We just haven't particularly been playing our best baseball, I don't think, for the last couple weeks. That's just part of the season. Not from lack of effort or anything like that. But I knew I wanted to win today. I expect every time I go out there to put our team in position to win, and we were able to do that.'
Skubal struck out 11 and walked none in his seventh double-digit strikeout game this season. His final batter was a strikeout of Jonah Heim that left him at 105 pitches, three short of his career high.
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Skubal 'emptied his tank' on the Heim at-bat and made the pitching change to avoid overworking him.
'If we're going anywhere (this season), we're going with him,' Hinch said.
Two of Texas' four hits off Skubal were by Corey Seager, the lone left-handed hitter in the starting lineup against the lefty Skubal. Seager went 2 for 3 off Skubal, improving to 8 for 12 in his career.
Skubal said he asked Seager during last year's All-Star festivities: 'Bro, how do I get you out? Can you tell me?' Seager, Skubal said, politely declined and claimed not to see the ball well when hitting against him.
'When he's right, the stuff he does at the dish, the best in the league,' Skubal said.
Skubal is again among the best in baseball on the mound. He did his part in ending what was the majors' longest active losing streak, even without getting a personal W.

Cowboys open camp down $15 million of talent as three CBs, LB start on PUP/NFI lists
The Cowboys are ready to kick off their 2025 training camp in Oxnard, Calif., but several key members of the new-look defense will be a little later to start than their teammates. Cornerbacks Trevon Diggs and Josh Butler will open camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, as will linebacker DeMarvion Overshown. Rookie cornerback Shavon Revel, Jr. will start out on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) list. Todd Archer of ESPN reported the statuses of the quartet in a Monday morning post to X. None of the four announcements is a surprise. Diggs was shelved in late December, the result of a knee injury that he had played through for most of the 2024 season. He had surgery in January that included a tissue graft procedure, and he was never really expected to be cleared for practice by the beginning of this summer's camp. It's the second straight camp in which the 26-year-old has started out on PUP; last July, he was wrapping up a lengthy rehab, after an ACL tear in the same knee that had cost him most of the 2023 campaign. This time around, the former second-round draft pick has been doing much of his rehab away from the Cowboys facility and staff, a decision that will cost him half a million dollars due to a workout provision in his contract. There is speculation that this could be the final year for Diggs in Dallas, with the club possibly ready to cut ties with the highly-paid but often-injured DB. Diggs is set to cost $12 million against the Cowboys cap for 2025. Overshown is also dealing with a major knee injury. After missing his rookie season to a torn ACL, he suffered a devastating ACL/MCL/PCL tear in December that brought his stellar campaign to an early end. The ex-Texas linebacker wants to return to action in late 2025, however, and is reportedly ahead of schedule in his rehab. The 24-year-old has even declared himself a contender for the league's Comeback Player of the Year award. He checks in with a $1.5 million price tag for this season. Butler's ACL injury was another late-season blow for the Dallas defense, as the Michigan State product had been part of the club's fill-in plan for both Diggs and DaRon Bland. In just his fifth game appearance for the team, he went down on Thanksgiving Day and missed the remainder of the season. The ex-UFL star said on social media just last week that he was "ready for camp." Butler is making around the league minimum and is on the books for $960,000. Revel was the Cowboys' third-round draft pick back in April and will count $1.2 million against the cap this season. The East Carolina product had been thought to be a first-round talent before an ACL tear forced him to sit out most of his final year with the Pirates. Still, his skills are undeniable, and the 24-year-old taken with the 76th overall selection was considered one of the biggest steals of the draft. Phillies sign reliever David Robertson to 1-year deal in bid to win 2nd straight NL East title
PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Phillies have signed right-hander David Robertson to a one-year contract, bolstering their bullpen in a bid to outlast the New York Mets and win a second straight NL East title. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski made the move Monday, optioning the 40-year-old reliever to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Robertson was a key pitcher for the New York Yankees when they won the 2009 World Series and was an All-Star two years later with the franchise. He helped the Phillies reach the 2022 World Series, going 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA in eight postseason games, and also played for them in 2019. Robertson was 3-4 with a 3.00 ERA in 68 games — two shy of his career high — and had two saves last season in Texas. He declined a $7 million mutual option, triggering a $1.5 million buyout and making him a free agent. He is 66-46 with a 2.91 ERA with 177 saves and 1,154 strikeouts, ranking 11th all time among relievers. The Yankees drafted the former Alabama player 17th overall in 2016 and he also pitched for the Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Chicago Cubs, New York Mets, Miami and the Rangers. The Phillies and Mets are in a closely contested race for first in the NL East with 60-plus games remaining in the regular season.

Besides that, the outfield is the biggest hole on the roster, and there might not be a better fit for this Phillies team than Kwan. Kwan could be placed alongside Trea Turner at the top of the lineup. Kwan and Turner could set the plate for the heavy hitters and create a nightmare lineup for pitchers to face in the postseason.
