
Kia still mulling hybrid, EV power for Tasman ute

dual-cab ute will soon be launched only with a diesel engine, and without any form of electrified powertrains.
That's especially so given the Korean brand's well-stocked inventory of petrol-electric (HEV) and battery-electric (EV) vehicle technologies, and the number of competitors adding hybrid drivetrains.
But the carmaker's first pickup is expected to eventually become available with at least EV power.
Speaking with CarExpert at the a local prototype drive for the Tasman, Kia Australia's general manager for product Roland Rivero said the Tasman's new bespoke ladder-frame platform accommodates multiple powertrain types.

'So what's on the cards of being studied and reviewed, there's definitely hybrid and [full] electrification. When, is still very much TBC,' Mr Rivero said.
'I think the focus right now for all the markets that [Kia Global] has developed the Tasman [for] is 'we've given you the starting point, achieve your respective business plans and what you've promised to achieve with Tasman, and we can look at what needs to be done to sustain that or grow in the years to com'.
'Tasman will have a long model life. Traditional [light commercial vehicle lifecycles] are anywhere from eight to 12 years – expect to see the same for Tasman, and to sustain demand and appeal for such a long period of time, you can't sit on your laurels.'
Mr Rivero added that the Tasman's ladder-frame chassis is a 'fairly modular platform' which can 'underpin numerous powertrains'.
For now, however, Australia is only getting a Euro 5 emissions-compliant version (ie: no AdBlue) of the carmaker's 154kW/440Nm 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, matched to both 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrains. Shifting gears is an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard.
Mr Rivero ruled out Australian availability of the 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine offered in the Korean market, citing pressure from the Australian Government's New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), which will see carmakers financially penalised for not meeting average emissions caps from July 1, 2025.
The turbo-petrol motor available abroad could, however, be implemented in a future hybrid drivetrain.
Last month the Hyundai Motor Group – parent of the Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands – detailed the next generation of its hybrid technologies, hinting at its future product plans.
Debuting in the new Hyundai Palisade large SUV, which is powered by a 2.5-litre turbo-petrol hybrid system, the new set of electrified technologies are claimed to improve performance and efficiency, as well as general driveability.

, but the takeaway relating to the Tasman is a small note in the release stating that a rear-wheel drive-biased version of the 2.5 turbo hybrid is in the works for a 2026 introduction.
While this is likely being developed primarily for the Genesis luxury division, it could also be tailored to the Tasman ute, given it already employs the non-hybrid version of that powertrain.
As for a battery-electric version, Kia South Africa's head of marketing, Christo Valentyn, told
CarBuzz
in December last year that a
Tasman EV was definitely 'coming'
, though he didn't give an indication on timing.
'I'm probably not supposed to say this, but… an electric one is coming,' Mr Valentyn reportedly said at a media roundtable.
Kia confirmed
globally in 2022
that it was working on two utes: 'a dedicated electric pickup truck and a strategic model for emerging markets', the latter of which is understood to be a battery-electric Tasman derivative.
An electric Tasman would give Kia a rival for the upcoming LDV eTerron 9, while other brands like Ford have indicated globally that they're working on electric utes of their own to compete in this segment.

Four-wheel drive utes and electric vehicles (EVs) were among the big winners in July 2025, despite a reduction in sales for Toyota and Tesla. According to VFACTS figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) today, a total of 104,244 new vehicles were delivered in July 2025, up 2.0 per cent on July 2024. That made last month the best July on record in Australia, beating the previous record set last year with 102,181 deliveries. Supplied Credit: CarExpert The popularity of PHEVs continues to grow, with 4031 reaching customers in July 2025, up 81.7 per cent year-on-year (YoY), though unlike last month the popular BYD Shark 6 didn't make the top 10 – or even the top 20. Overall, deliveries to private buyers were up by 6.1 per cent YoY to 52,952, while business vehicle registrations were up a more modest 1.6 per cent to 37,636. A significant increase in deliveries to rental companies (6095, up 20.8 per cent) was offset somewhat by a 23.2 per cent drop in government vehicle sales (to 2779). Overall deliveries also increased across the four most populous states in Australia. Kia only just started deliveries of its Tasman ute – with 683 rolling out in July – but it was just 50 deliveries short of Mazda. Once the Tasman fully comes on stream, the Korean brand poses a significant threat to Mazda and Ford which usually jockey for second spot. Ford was down 6.1 per cent to 7279 deliveries. It delivered no F-150s due to a stop-sale, while its 4×2 Ranger was down 23.3 per cent (and consequently beaten by the Mazda BT-50 4×2) and its 4×4 Ranger was down 19.8 per cent. However, the Blue Oval managed to offload a few more examples of the defunct Escape than it did last year, with 22 reaching customers. Ford's third best-selling vehicle, however, was the Mustang at 429 deliveries, far and away Australia's most popular sports car. Sales drops for the popular Palisade and Santa Fe were offset by strong Kona and Tucson sales. The top 10 was rounded out by Mitsubishi, GWM, BYD, Isuzu Ute and Subaru. Chery sat just outside the top 10 with 3149 deliveries, managing to beat fellow Chinese brand MG as well as Nissan thanks to a 267.4 per cent YoY increase in deliveries. This was a record result for the Chinese brand, and fuelled by strong sales of the Tiggo 4 which was Australia's best-selling small SUV. Tesla had a lousy month, down 64.6 per cent year over year – the biggest decline of any brand bar Lotus and Aston Martin. The EV brand sat in 22nd position with just 917 deliveries. Its best seller, the Model Y, notched up only 555 deliveries – just three more than the Lexus NX, and well behind the BYD Sealion 7 (1427). Besides Chery, the brands that saw the biggest YoY increases were BYD (up 158 per cent to 4607 deliveries) and Polestar (up 123.3 per cent). It delivered 48 examples of its $174,990 plus-on roads Yukon Denali, managing to outsell affordable Chinese brands like Leapmotor (43) and Deepal (40). Leapmotor and Deepal were also soundly beaten by other new Chinese entrants Omoda Jaecoo (434) and Geely (490). Both of these brands managed to beat established brands like Renault and Skoda. Chinese car sales may be surging, but Chery, GWM, MG and BYD only managed to have one model each in the top 20. Honda won't follow BYD, MG in bringing a luxury brand to Australia
Honda won't bring in its premium Acura brand offered overseas to target a growing number of premium-pitched Chinese arrivals such as BYD's Denza and MG's IM Motors in Australia. Acura was established in 1986, three years before Toyota introduced Lexus and Nissan introduced Infiniti. It also preceded Mazda's Eunos, Efini, and aborted Amati brands. While Lexus remains on sale, Acura has never came to Australia. That's despite Infiniti being offered between 2012 and 2020 and Eunos being launched as a standalone brand here in 1992 before being folded into Mazda in 1996. Hyundai has since launched Genesis as a Lexus rival, but now Chinese car companies are getting in on the act with luxury brands of their own, including BYD's Denza due in Australia by the end of 2025. The growth of premium brands hasn't prompted new Honda Australia CEO Jay Joseph, who took the reins in April 2025, to add Acura to that list. '[Bringing Acura] here would require substantial commitment of resources in developing a brand – you've got to have brand awareness before people shop,' Mr Joseph told CarExpert. 'Candidly, I think our priority should be on expanding the potential of Honda and making sure that we've done everything we can with the Honda brand before we would consider taking on an additional brand here in Australia.' Supplied Credit: CarExpert Above: First and second generations of Acura/Honda NSX The Acura name was applied to some key Honda models in the past, including the second-generation NSX – which was also manufactured in the US – and models such as the Integra sports car and Legend. All of these vehicles have been sold under the Honda name in Australia and other places, such as the United Kingdom (UK), but with Acura badges in North America. Likewise, Acura's MDX was sold here during its first generation as a Honda. Subsequent North American-built Acuras have been produced only in left-hand drive however, ruling them out for our market.'Acura has been in other markets over time – of course the States – and Acura is pretty solid in Canada as well,' Mr Joseph added. 'We have had Acura in China for a time, but that didn't work as we hoped it would – China is difficult because many of those products had to be imported from North America, and that's a challenge.' Acura launched its first electric vehicle (EV), the ZDX, in 2024. It shares a platform with General Motors vehicles such as the Cadillac Lyriq sold here. Acura recently swung the axe on its BMW 3 Series-rivalling TLX sedan. Following Japanese and Korean automakers' introductions of luxury brands, it's now Chinese brands getting into this space. BYD has Denza and Yangwang in China, while Geely has Zeekr in addition to foreign premium brands it has acquired like Volvo and GWM is planning an even more upscale brand to sit above its Wey marque. Chinese brands surged in Australia over the first half of 2025, with BYD becoming the first to break into the top five best sellers in June, with Denza expected to add to its growth when it launches later this year. Lexus, meanwhile, was 21st overall between January and June, trailing key rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz but ahead of Audi and Volvo. Honda is on track for its best full-year result since 2021 (17,562) if it can match its 8068 sales to the end of June, which equates to 16,136.
