In the shadow of Mitch Marner's exit, a fresh narrative is forming in Toronto — and it's wearing No. 88. As the Maple Leafs adjust to a new era without their elite playmaker, attention now shifts toward William Nylander.
With his infectious charisma and explosive on-ice talent, Nylander isn't just filling a void — he's poised to redefine it. Leafs fans, the takeover isn't coming. It's already in motion.
A new chapter begins: William Nylander steps into the spotlight
While much of the buzz in Toronto has always circled Auston Matthews, there's a quiet revolution unfolding with William Nylander. Fresh off a career-best 45-goal season, the Swedish winger is proving he's not just a scorer but a dynamic playmaker as well.
Though his assist count dipped from 58 to 39 last season, the challenge ahead is clear — balance the sniper's edge with the vision of a premier setup man. If he finds that sweet spot, fans might not miss Marner's artistry as much as they feared.
What makes Nylander even more essential in this post-Marner landscape is his versatility. Under Craig Berube, his deployment offers tantalizing possibilities — either flanking Matthews and Matthew Knies on the top line or generating momentum with veterans like John Tavares and Matias Maccelli on the second.

Both combinations position Nylander as a central figure, not just in execution but in leadership.
And let's be honest — at $11.5 million per year, expectations are sky-high. But Nylander has shown he thrives under pressure. His six goals and 15 points in 13 playoff games last spring were not just clutch, they were a message: this isn't a support player anymore. This is a franchise cornerstone.
From rising star to franchise cornerstone: William Nylander's moment has arrived
Nylander's temperament may just be his secret weapon.
Unlike the visibly burdened Marner, Nylander carries himself with a relaxed confidence. 'If you've been in a dressing room with Nylander... you can't help but note that he's a happy guy on the whole.' That steady mindset will be crucial as scrutiny intensifies and the spotlight burns brighter.
Raised by an

father, Nylander understands what it takes to perform under constant media glare. And now, with Marner gone and expectations higher than ever, the Leafs need him to stay consistent, electrifying, and dependable. He's been all of that for nearly a decade. There's every reason to believe he'll be even more.
Nylander isn't just ready for the spotlight. He was born for it.

Inspired Divya takes down Harika in rapid to face China's World No.8 Tan in semis; India confirms one Candidates berth

Nagpur: Making the most of her favourite chess format, World junior champion Divya Deshmukh made it to the FIDE Women's World Cup semifinals in Batumi, Georgia, on Monday. Nagpur's 19-year-old International Master (IM) knocked down veteran Grandmaster D Harika in the first set of quarterfinal tiebreaks played in Divya's favourite rapid format. The win saw her take a bold step towards qualifying for the Women's Candidates tournament. Divya won both her games played with the white and black pieces to clinch the quarterfinal 3-1, a day after the compatriots drew two of their classical games. Divya was overwhelmed with emotions after winning the second tiebreak game, which at one stage was a losing contest for her. She said, "Happy with the way I played today. I think the preparation had a lot of role in the first rapid game today. I would like to thank my coach for this. The last game didn't go the way I thought. In the second game, Harika played quite well, I am just glad it's over." In the day's opening game played in the rapid format, Divya utilised her opening advantage with white pieces well. Divya opted for the Giuoco Piano Game with Center attack, utilising her pawn. On the 22nd and 24th turns, Harika made a couple of dubious moves, and Divya found her attacking weapon. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals On the 33rd move, Divya snatched Harika's queen by exchanging her rook to take a firm grip on the contest. She converted the queen vs rook endgame and took the lead by winning the contest in 57 moves. In the following game with black pieces, Divya chose the Slav Defense of Modern Line. After Divya played a couple of questionable moves, Harika made a mistake on the 18th turn. Despite that, the game remained equal with a couple of Harika's bishops and Divya's knight and bishop. A 60th move by Divya confused Harika, and she made back-to-back blunders on the 61st and 63rd turns. Divya was severely low on time and on the verge of losing the contest, but she started making her moves fast and succeeded in going a pawn up. When Divya made her winning 76th move by advancing her pawn, Harika resigned. From Tuesday, the semifinal battles will be played between India and China. Divya will face China's World No. 8 Tan Zhongyi, and Koneru Humpy will be up against top seed Lei Tingjie. With the top three finishers qualifying for the Women's Candidates tournament, both Humpy and Divya can earn the right to fight in the event from where the World Champion Challenger will be identified. On her plans against Tan in the semifinals, Divya said, "I always wanted to avoid tiebreaks, but it's not in my hands. I just want to forget everything and eat now. After that, I will start preparing." On who was the toughest opponent in the World Cup so far, Divya said, "Zhu was the toughest opponent. Winning against Zhu in tiebreaks gave me confidence, and today it reflected in my play."

He made a bold statement about rookie defensive end Shemar Stewart, who still hasn't signed his contract with the team. While many thought the delay was about money, Mike Brown hinted at a much different reason. His comment about paying players who land in jail raised questions and created even more drama around the unsigned rookie. The wait continues as fans wonder if this will stop the deal completely. What Mike Brown wants in Shemar Stewart's contract Mike Brown, who has owned the Cincinnati Bengals since 1991, said the issue with Shemar Stewart's contract is not about cash. Instead, it's about a clause the Cincinnati Bengals want to include. Mike Brown said on July 21 that he doesn't want to pay a player who ends up in jail. 'If we get a player who does something unacceptable, guess what? I don't want to pay him. I really don't,' he said while speaking to reporters. Mike Brown admitted that this type of clause is new and not something they've used before. He explained that Shemar Stewart is not in trouble but the team wants extra protection. Shemar Stewart still training but missing camp Shemar Stewart, 21, was picked 17th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. He played college football at Texas A&M. Since June, he's been training on his own in College Station, Texas. Stewart has not joined Bengals camp in Cincinnati, which began on July 23 at Kettering Health Practice Fields. Because he hasn't signed, he can't take part in team practices. Bengals director Duke Tobin said, 'He's listening to the advice he's paying for. I don't understand the advice.' Reports say Stewart's contract also has fewer injury protections and bonus money than others drafted in similar spots.
