President Xi Jinping on Tuesday stressed efforts to advance the building of a unified national market and promote the high-quality development of the marine economy.
Xi made the remarks at a meeting of the Central Commission for Financial and Economic Affairs, which he heads.
In his speech, the president emphasised that building a unified national market is essential for creating a new development pattern and promoting high-quality development, urging strengthened coordination and cooperation to build synergy in related work.
He stressed that advancing Chinese modernisation requires promoting the marine economy's high-quality development and forging a Chinese path of leveraging marine resources to achieve strength.
Also at the meeting, the country's leaders pledged to step up regulation of aggressive price-cutting by Chinese companies, as the world's second-biggest economy tries to shake off persistent deflationary pressures.
"Enterprises engaging in disorderly low-price competition must be regulated in accordance with laws and regulations," the commission was quoted as saying.
"Businesses should be guided to improve product quality and support the orderly phasing out of outdated production capacity." (Xinhua/Reuters)

Gilgeous-Alexander agrees record contract extension

Gilgeous-Alexander agrees record contract extension The deal gives Gilgeous-Alexander the highest annual salary in NBA history. File photo: Reuters Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has agreed a four-year US$285 million contract extension, the richest per-year contract in NBA history, according to US media reports. Gilgeous-Alexander, who guided the Thunder to the NBA championship last month after a campaign that saw him win regular season and finals Most Valuable Player awards, is now tied to the club through 2031. The 26-year-old Canadian point guard has two years remaining on his existing contract with Oklahoma City worth US$79.1 million. The four additional seasons of his contract extension will see him receive US$62.5 million, US$68.6 million, US$73.7 million and then US$78.7 million in 2030-2031. The deal gives Gilgeous-Alexander the highest annual salary in the NBA, eclipsing the average US$64.3 million salary of the Philadelphia 76ers' Joel Embiid and the US$62.8 million earned by the Boston Celtics' Jayson Tatum. Gilgeous-Alexander was the fulcrum of the Thunder's dazzling 68-win Western Conference season, before inspiring the team to a 4-3 NBA Finals victory over the Indiana Pacers last month. The Thunder ace averaged a league-high 32.7 points during the regular season and 30.3 points in the NBA Finals on his way to completing his MVP double. He became only the fourth player in history to win both NBA regular season and finals MVP awards as well as the league's scoring title, putting him into an exclusive club alongside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan and Shaquille O'Neal. US stocks mixed as Trump tax bill advances, Tesla fall

US stocks mixed as Trump tax bill advances, Tesla fall The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.9 percent, the S&P 500 shed 0.1 percent, while the Nasdaq Composite Index was down 0.8 percent. Photo: Reuters Wall Street stocks finished mixed on Tuesday after the Senate approved Donald Trump's sweeping legislation to extend tax cuts and enact deep reductions in social spending. The Republican-led upper congressional chamber narrowly cleared the US President's mammoth domestic policy bill, sending the measure back to the House of Representatives, where the vote is also expected to be close. Equity market viewers have cheered the prospects of extending tax cuts while expressing misgivings about projections that the measure will add some US$3 trillion to the US national debt. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.9 percent to 44,494. But the broad-based S&P 500 dipped 0.1 percent to 6,198, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 0.8 percent to 20,202. Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at records on Monday. Data released on Tuesday showed US manufacturing activity shrank in June for a fourth straight month, though by a slower rate than the prior month. The report comes ahead of key US data later in the week, including the closely watched monthly jobs report. Among individual companies, Tesla fell 5.3 percent as the electric car company's CEO Elon Musk sparred with Trump over the tax and spending bill. After Musk lambasted the legislation as wasteful and misguided, Trump warned of retribution against Tesla and other Musk ventures. "This high-profile feud introduces political risk," said of the tiff. "The personal nature of the conflict, amplified by Trump's comments implying Tesla's reliance on subsidies for survival, has sparked fears of broader policy shifts targeting Musk's business empire. This political uncertainty undermines investor confidence." Meanwhile, rival automakers General Motors and Ford jumped 5.7 percent and 4.6 percent respectively, after reporting higher second-quarter US auto sales, as consumers accelerated purchases to get ahead of US tariffs. China-Singapore relations a steadying force amid global uncertainty

Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong chose China for his first state visit outside Southeast Asia since he won the general election in May. That was a clear message as it came at a time of intense rivalry between China and the United States. All his predecessors since Lee Kuan Yew treasured the stable bilateral relations between the two countries, and Wong is saying he is no exception. One of the high-profile events he attended was the 'Summer Davos' in Tianjin. Meanwhile, he has extended an invitation to President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang to visit Singapore. The visit was also a balancing act. Singapore's relations with the US are vital. So there is a need to show it is not taking sides. Beijing has long attached great importance to its relations with the Lion City, and Xi has called for a deepening of ties. As the biggest foreign investor, Singapore is welcome to new business opportunities in China. This is symbolised by the iconic Suzhou Industrial Park in Jiangsu, one of the oldest of its kind, with new plans for expansion. Singapore has proposed to deepen collaboration on such projects as the Suzhou park and in third-party ventures. Xi has called on Singapore to stand with China 'on the right side of history'. That means future bilateral development must be safeguarded to ensure they are on the right track, with mutual support to further each other's 'core interests'. In this context, Wong has reiterated Singapore's support for the 'one China' principle, while Xi emphasised cooperation, such as through the Belt and Road Initiative, hi-tech development and a green economy. China strongly believes that the historic tide is for peace, development and cooperation. International relations ought to be about win-win, not the law of the jungle in which the strong bullies the weak.
