ABU DHABI, UAE, May 29, 2025 /CNW/ -- Phygital International, the global governing body for the Games of the Future (GOTF), has officially announced Abu Dhabi as the Host City for the Games of the Future 2025, taking place from 18-23 December.
Bringing together cutting-edge innovation and elite competition, the Games of the Future will transform Abu Dhabi into the epicenter of phygital sport and feature a dynamic fusion of physical athleticism and immersive digital gaming. The multi-sport event includes a variety of ground-breaking phygital disciplines, including Phygital Football and Phygital Shooter, as well as tech sports and esports.
Each phygital discipline sees athletes first compete in a digital version of their sport, followed by competing in the same sport in real-life. Final results are determined by combining performance across both stages - blending the physical and virtual into one seamless competitive experience.
ASPIRE, the driving force behind grand challenges and global competitions for Abu Dhabi's Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), is appointed as the UAE Delivery Authority. In this role, ASPIRE will lead the delivery of the event's innovation agenda, ensure alignment across multiple stakeholders, and coordinate funding frameworks with government partners and sponsors.
Ethara, the region's leading live event management organization, will serve as the Event Delivery Partner, leading end-to-end execution including venue operations, logistics, and fan experience. In addition, Ethara will drive event promotion and play a key commercial role by securing sponsorships and partnerships to support the event's success. The Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC) has been confirmed as the official venue, providing a world-class stage for the full spectrum of phygital sporting competitions and fan experiences.
"We're thrilled that Abu Dhabi will welcome thousands of phygital athletes, clubs, and fans for the Games of the Future 2025," said Nis Hatt, CEO of Phygital International. "With its bold vision for sport and technology, the UAE is the ideal stage for this groundbreaking event. Since the inaugural Games, phygital sports have grown into a global movement, and this year's edition promises to be our most exciting yet."
Stephane Timpano, CEO of ASPIRE said: "As the UAE Delivery Authority, ASPIRE is proud to help shape the Games of the Future Abu Dhabi 2025 - a global platform where sport, technology, and imagination converge. From AI-powered mobility to immersive digital experiences, Abu Dhabi is where innovation meets impact. We look forward to welcoming the world to ADNEC this December for an event that will inspire the future of sport and technology."
In addition to elite competitions, the event will feature virtual reality immersive fan engagement zones, cultural activations, and technology showcases. The inaugural edition of the Games of the Future, saw over 2,000 athletes from more than 100 countries take part, broadcast to global audience and attracting over 300,000 spectators and fans.
The Games of the Future: Abu Dhabi, 2025 marks a powerful next chapter for the phygital movement, bringing the Games to a new audience in the Middle East, where ambition, experimentation, and bold applications of technology thrive. Ezra Frech talks 2028 Paralympic promise, ‘Adaptive' doc series on TODAY

For Ezra Frech, gold medals on back-to-back days at the Paris Paralympics were extraordinary, but not completely satisfying. So Frech is sticking to the promise he made years ago — to win three track and field events at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. 'To win a gold in the three most explosive events — high jump, long jump, 100m — and do it in my hometown,' he said on the TODAY Show set on Tuesday. 'That would top these (two Paris Olympic gold medals).' Frech, 20, won the T63 100m and high jump in Paris last summer. He also placed fifth in the long jump after finishing fourth in that event at the previous two world championships. He actually missed his first few weeks of freshman classes at USC to compete at the Games. After winning the 100m, a professor sent him a congratulatory email that also reminded him to complete classwork by the next day. 'I'm sitting there, greatest moment of my life, gold medal on my neck, thinking there's no way I'm doing this discussion (work) before tomorrow,' he said. Next on the track for Frech could be the Para National Championships from July 31-Aug. 2 in Eugene, Oregon, held in conjunction with the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships for the first time. Frech is qualified to contest the 100m, high jump and long jump should he choose to compete. The World Championships are Sept. 26-Oct. 5 in New Delhi, India. In the meantime, Frech stars in 'Adaptive,' which debuts July 28 on Peacock. The three-episode series follows four U.S. Paralympians' experiences at the Paris Games: Frech, Jamal Hill (Para swimming), Courtney Ryan (Wheelchair basketball) and Josie Aslakson (Wheelchair basketball). 'Adaptive is literally everything that a sports doc should be,' Frech said. 'It's raw, authentic. It's emotional. It's gritty. There's lots of lows and failure and laughter, and then in my case, ultimately, the highest of the highs.' Paralympic venue plan outlined for 2028 Los Angeles Games All 2028 Paralympic venues are expected to be within a 35-mile radius surrounding Los Angeles.

Qatar bids for 2036 Olympics, Paralympics with Doha

Doha is bidding for the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics as Qatar hopes to become the first nation from the Middle East and North Africa to host the Games. The Qatar Olympic Committee said Tuesday that it has participated in ongoing discussions with the IOC during a dialogue phase for interested bidders. The Qatar committee published a 16-page bid press kit that boasted 95 percent of required competition venues already operational. Qatar hosted the last men's FIFA World Cup in 2022, plus Doha recently held World Championships in swimming (2024), track and field (2019) and gymnastics (2018). 'Building on the monumental success of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, we reaffirm our readiness to bring the world together under the banner of the Olympic values just as we did in 2022, when Doha welcomed over one million traveling fans from around the globe,' the kit read. 'Our journey to 2022 was one of tremendous growth. The path toward 2036 will build on that foundation with a new kind of legacy: an achievement that crowns Qatar's efforts to develop skills and create economic opportunities for all its people.' Doha previously bid for the 2016 and 2020 Olympics and did not reach the IOC voting phase either time. New IOC President Kirsty Coventry said in June that the Olympic hosting process is being paused to review when and how to award future Games. Coventry said the decision had overwhelming support from IOC members. IOC members voted to determine hosts seven years before the Games until recent reforms allowed flexibility for how and when they were awarded. India, the world's most populous nation, has also expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Games. The India Olympic Association sent a letter of intent to the IOC in October 2024. Then in early July, India media reported that the city of Ahmedabad was chosen as the specific bid city. India has never hosted an Olympics or Paralympics nor had a bid reach the final stages. It did host the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. The 2024 and 2028 Olympics were awarded at the same time in 2017 to Paris and Los Angeles, respectively. The 2026 Winter Games were awarded to Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo in Italy in a traditional IOC members vote seven years out. In 2019, the IOC introduced future host commissions that could enter what it called 'targeted dialogue' with potential hosts rather than having a traditional bid race. The 2030 and 2034 Winter Games were awarded in 2024 to the French Alps and Salt Lake City, respectively. The 2032 Brisbane Games were awarded in 2021. All were chosen after having targeted dialogue.
