When will the cold front land in Gauteng?
Due to the intense cut-off low system, extreme weather conditions will affect many areas starting in the Western Cape from Saturday.
'By Monday, 9 June 2025 and Tuesday, 10 June 2025, this extensive and severe winter weather system will have shifted further east over South Africa, affecting the central and eastern provinces.
'A significant and dramatic drop in daytime temperatures can be expected over all provinces, with the possible exception of Limpopo. Consequently, farmers of small stock are strongly advised to implement appropriate measures to prevent stock losses due to exposure to bitter cold and wind,' the SAWS said.
Temperatures are expected to drop significantly in the northern parts of the country by Monday. The weather service has warned of snowfall over almost every province, except for Limpopo.
There is a risk of severe thunderstorms, potentially accompanied by damaging hail and winds in several provinces, including North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday and Tuesday.
For Gauteng, Tuesday will be the coldest day of the year, with many regions reaching subzero temperatures in the morning.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) said it will continue to monitor any further developments relating to the expected weather systems. The cold front is set to linger until Friday in most regions.

KwaZulu-Natal wakes to cold, dry weather with cloudy skies
KwaZulu-Natal residents woke up to brisk temperatures and partly cloudy skies on Monday, marking another cold and dry winter morning in the province. Durban started at just 9°C, while inland areas like Newcastle and Ulundi remained even more freezing. 'We are starting the day with a bit of fog over the South Coast and the adjacent interior,' reported the weather forecaster. Temperatures across KwaZulu-Natal will mostly stay in the upper teens throughout the day. Coastal regions fared slightly better, with Durban expected to peak at 23°C under mostly dry skies. 'It's going to be a dry one for the interior,' forecasters said. Pietermaritzburg and inland towns will experience cooler maximums, while the Drakensberg foothills remain particularly cold. Despite the sun's appearance through the clouds in the afternoon, conditions in KwaZulu-Natal will stay far from warm. The afternoon will bring slight improvements in visibility, but skies will remain partly to mostly cloudy in the eastern parts of the province. Cold weather grips Gauteng with partly cloudy skies
Gauteng experienced a biting cold weather start on Monday; with freezing morning temperatures and partly cloudy skies expected throughout the day. Johannesburg and Pretoria began the day at a chilling 6°C, while maximum temperatures across the province will struggle to rise above the upper teens. 'Temperatures will remain in the upper teens throughout the day,' a forecaster said, cautioning that residents should prepare for continued chill. Fire risk in Gauteng's nearby regions remains high While Gauteng faces cold weather and cloudy conditions, nearby areas like the Northern Cape face a different threat. The South African Weather Service issued a high fire danger warning for the northwestern parts of the Northern Cape. 'You need to be careful about fires in those parts of the country,' warned the forecaster. Gauteng, however, remains dry, mainly with no immediate threat of rain. The partly cloudy skies will offer brief moments of sun but will fail to bring significant warmth. Polokwane and other nearby areas recorded similar cold trends, with only minimal relief expected in the coming days. Till the afternoon, Gauteng will remain under partly cloudy skies, with cool to cold conditions stretching across the province. Get your blankets out: Double cold snap to hit Gauteng this week
Gauteng residents have been urged to double their blankets ahead of a double cold front expected to hit the province... Gauteng residents have been urged to double their blankets ahead of a double cold front expected to hit the province this week. Temperatures in Gauteng are expected to drop close to the freezing mark as the cold weather grips most parts of the country. Freezing weather Gauteng Weather has forecast the mercury for Johannesburg on Friday to drop to 0°C, reaching a high of 14°C. Pretoria is forecast to have a temperature of 2°C, with a high of 16°C. The cold weather is possibly the last breath of winter as the country moves to warmer temperatures. Emergencies The drop in temperatures means that residents throughout the City of Johannesburg will be forced to use all sorts of heating devices to try to warm themselves. This can make them vulnerable to fire incidents at home if heating devices are used unsafely or unattended. Residents have been urged to use all heating devices safely, including heaters, braziers, paraffin stoves and candles, and not to leave them unattended while in use to prevent fire incidents at home during the extremely cold weather. Weather across SA Meanwhile, the South African Weather Services (Saws) expects isolated showers along the east coast and the northeastern parts of the country. Possible damaging winds and waves are anticipated along the east coast of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). There is also a forecast for extremely high fire danger conditions in the Nama Khoi municipality of the Namakwa district in the Northern Cape. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the weather service forecasts partly cloudy conditions over the central and western parts of the country, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers. Load shedding While the cold weather sweeps across Johannesburg and the country, South Africans are relieved that there was no load shedding during winter. In May, Eskom said it would have more than 2.5GW of power this winter and could avoid load shedding altogether if unplanned breakdowns remain below 13GW. Minister of Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, said there would be more power available this year to combat winter. ALSO READ: WMO's new climate forecast warns Earth is getting hotter and hotter
