The Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre (SBPAC) leads these efforts alongside Malaysian agencies, focusing on Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, Songkhla, and Satun—regions historically impacted by economic challenges and instability.
SBPAC Secretary-General Pol. Lt. Col. Wannapong Kotcharak emphasised the shared commitment to uplifting communities and fostering peace through grassroots development.
'Our main responsibility is to ensure that people in this region can lead better, more secure lives. We are committed to doing everything possible to improve their livelihoods,' he told Bernama.
Key projects include modernising the Sadao checkpoint to match Bukit Kayu Hitam's standards and constructing a second bridge between Sungai Golok and Rantau Panjang to boost trade and mobility.
The Twin City programme, linking five Thai provinces with five Malaysian states, further strengthens ties in education, tourism, and halal industries.
Thailand's 2019 Targeted People Development Database revealed over 107,000 people in the region living in poverty.
SBPAC's second-phase development plan (2024-2027) aims to benefit 13,601 households through farming, fisheries, and small business initiatives.
The revived Advisory Council for the Administration and Development, chaired by Dr Khodari Sen, ensures community needs guide development.
'The people are more comfortable dealing with us than government agencies. We want to prove that this council truly belongs to them,' he said.
Seven specialised teams oversee policy implementation, prioritising justice, education, and economic empowerment.
Cross-border projects require council approval to align with local priorities, reinforcing the strong cultural and economic bonds between Thailand and Malaysia. - Bernama

Umno must accept reality that it can't go solo
GEORGE TOWN: Umno must accept that long-term survival in Malaysian politics now depends on strategic alliances, not solo ambition, said party vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. He said that since the founding of Barisan Nasional (BN), Umno had never operated on its own, and its strength had always depended on the support of its component parties. "No matter how great our leaders are, if any party in the BN coalition fails to bring in support from its community, we will lose. "So, we must accept that no party is dominant anymore. "We must carefully consider who we should work with. "This is the age of flexibility. When Umno works with the unity government, it is merely a strategic and tactical shift, not a change in principle or values. "Our core principles of championing the Malays and Islam remain unchanged. "Remember, no political alliance is permanent. "But our struggle, our ideology, remains. "What changes are the strategy and tactics," he said at the 2025 Bukit Gelugor Umno division delegates' meeting today. Khaled, who is also the defence minister, said Umno must choose its political partners wisely ahead of the 16th general election (GE16), expected in 2027, and that groundwork must begin now to secure the party's position. "If we win big, only then should we decide who to 'marry'. "We need wisdom, strategy, and tactics, just as we have begun laying the groundwork ahead of the upcoming state elections. "The question of who we work with shouldn't be rushed, it doesn't mean we must immediately embrace DAP. "Political alliances don't last forever. "But we must aim to win big so we can shape the government that emerges after GE16. "I don't even know where we'll end up, but what's important is that we are part of the government, because only then can we realise and fulfil our struggle," he said. He said the party leadership had never forgotten the contributions and sacrifices of former prime minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Khaled said the party had not given up efforts to defend Najib's cause, but remained committed to upholding the royal institution and the Federal Constitution. He said any action must be carried out wisely and respectfully to avoid offending any party, warning that rash decisions could set a bad precedent for others. "The matter of the Addendum Decree involves the royal institution and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. We must act wisely and respectfully towards our monarchy. "If we fail to safeguard this, other communities may take it as a cue in how they deal with our rulers. "That is why our secretary-general's (Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki) statement was issued with the utmost decorum, to avoid offending any party. "When it comes to matters not involving the monarchy, I truly believe no one can match the strength, passion and commitment of Umno's leaders," he said.

These engagements aim to surface actionable insights that may inform future initiatives or be shared in broader industry discussions. --> Innovation Previews and Feedback Loops Selected MSME partners will receive early access to new features, tools, or strategic initiatives and provide feedback. --> Collaborative Partnerships The Co-Lab may serve as a platform for engaging with partners on potential joint initiatives that benefit the broader Malaysian MSME community. 'This collaboration with Shopee allows us to bring the voices and needs of MSMEs directly into the room with decision-makers and platform innovators. It's not just about selling more, it's about building a more inclusive digital future together,' said Dato' Fazli Nordin, Managing Director, Advokasi Perusahaan dan Industri. Velvet Wire Bouquets Bloom Into Steady Income For Housewife
REGION - SOUTHERN > NEWS By Sarinah Mat Kasim SEREMBAN, July 13 (Bernama) -- What started as a hobby driven by a passion for art has now become a lucrative source of steady income for a housewife here, thanks to her creativity in crafting flowers from velvet wire. Siti Amirah Pilus, 36, said she first ventured into floral arrangement in 2014 by taking orders for wedding gifts before switching entirely to crafting with velvet wire over the past three years. bootstrap slideshow 'I started learning how to do velvet wire arrangements after being captivated by a tutorial on Instagram. I became interested, bought the wire, and tried it out. I saw that the results were quite good. 'It was quite difficult at first, but eventually it became easier once I got the rhythm and pattern down to make creations like flowers, keychains, decorations, and bouquets,' she told Bernama when met at her home here. The mother of four said that small velvet wire arrangements can be completed within five minutes, while larger ones like bouquets take up to two hours and that her creations are sold at prices ranging from RM3.50 to RM250 depending on the type and customer request. She said most customers usually order velvet bouquet arrangements and decorative flowers as gifts for convocation or retirement events, as they remain beautiful and do not wilt like real flowers, making them lasting keepsakes. 'Alhamdulillah, the response has been very encouraging. Every month I earn over RM1,500 from these arrangements, and once made up to RM8,000 when the product went viral on social media,' she said, adding that she runs the business from home. The Jempol native said she is one of the entrepreneurs guided by the Community Development Department (KEMAS), from which she received a one-off assistance of RM5,000 through the Quick Win Programme.
