A ninth officer has been restricted from working in Bury during the investigation.A date for the hearing will be set as soon as possible, the force added.
'Deeply concerning'
Meanwhile a separate probe, by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), is examining an unrelated incident of alleged racial discrimination against an officer, also in the Bury district.GMP said that investigation involved seven officers, of whom five remained suspended."The GMP and IOPC investigations relate to deeply concerning allegations into racist remarks about two officers in unrelated incidents," said GMP's head of professional standards, Det Ch Supt Mike Allen."We have conducted a thorough investigation and have fully supported the IOPC with their work, too."Ensuring we uphold the highest standards of professional behaviour across GMP is essential, and it is only right that when matters such as these are reported to us, we take all necessary action. "We now await the outcomes of these ongoing proceedings."GMP said it had worked extensively with officers, staff and the community in Bury to improve cultural awareness.

Watch: Illegal firework display on Hammersmith Bridge sparks blaze at nearby school

Two men have been arrested after an illegal firework display on Hammersmith Bridge sparked a fire at a nearby school on Sunday evening (3 August). Footage shows the bridge engulfed in flames as dozens of flares and fireworks were set off. It caused a hedge at nearby St Paul's School to catch fire. 'Two men, aged 22 and 18, were arrested on suspicion of arson. They both remain in police custody,' the Met Police said. No injuries were reported. A spokeswoman for St Paul's School told the Evening Standard: 'The fire was in a hedge - but the damage is very limited and only to the hedge itself,' praising staff and the fire brigade for preventing further spread. Anyone with information is urged to call 101, quoting CAD 6861/03AUG.

Home Secretary says police should reveal suspects' nationalities

Senior political figures, including the Prime Minister and Home Secretary, are urging police forces to increase transparency regarding details of criminal suspects. Yvette Cooper is developing new guidance for police to routinely disclose the nationality and asylum status of individuals charged with crimes, aligning with calls from Reform UK leader Nigel Farage. The controversy escalated after Warwickshire Police declined to release the immigration status of two men – reported to be Afghan asylum seekers – charged in connection with the alleged rape of a 12-year-old in Nuneaton, citing national guidelines. Advocates for increased transparency argue it is essential for rebuilding public trust, combating misinformation, and addressing public concerns amid ongoing protests related to asylum seeker accommodation. Both the College of Policing and the Law Commission are reviewing existing guidance and rules concerning the release of information by police.
