Bharat Bandh on 9 July 2025: Over 25 crore workers to go on strike — Are banks, schools, colleges open tomorrow?
The Bharat Bandh tomorrow may potentially disrupt services across the country, as many workers from several unions will be protesting the 'anti-worker, anti-farmer and anti-national pro-corporate policies of the government'.
A forum of 10 central trade unions and their associates has called for a general strike or 'Bharat Bandh' on July 9.
The forum in a statement has urged workers to make 'the nationwide general strike a grand success'. It has also said that preparations by unions in all sectors of formal and informal/unorganised economy are underway.
'More than 25 crore workers are expected to take part in the strike. Farmers and rural workers will also join the protest across the country,' Amarjeet Kaur from All India Trade Union Congress was quoted as saying by PTI.
The forum had last year submitted a charter of 17-point demand to Labour Minister Mansukh Mandavia, the workers' union forum said in its latest statement.
In its statement, the forum of unions has alleged that the government has not been conducting the annual labour conference for the last 10 years and continues to take decisions in contravention to the interest of labour force, attempting to impose four labour codes to weaken collective bargaining, to cripple unions' activities and to favour employers in the name of 'ease of doing business'.
The government has abandoned the welfare state status of the country and is working in the interest of foreign and Indian corporates, and it is so evident from its policies being pursued vigorously, the forum said.
Trade unions have been fighting against "privatisation of public sector enterprises and public services, policies of outsourcing, contractorisation and casualisation of workforce", it said.
Banking, postal, coal mining, factories, state transport services will be affected due to the strike, Harbhajan Singh Sidhu from Hind Mazdoor Sabha was quoted as saying by PTI.
Moreover, an association of bank employees on Monday said the banking sector will join the Bharat Bandh tomorrow. Bengal Provincial Bank Employees Association, affiliated to the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) further said that the insurance sector will also join the strike.
Electricity supply in the country may get affected on July 9 as over 27 lakh power workers will go on the Bharat Bandh tomorrow.
While no official bank holiday has been announced by banks and other government offices on July 9, services are expected to be disrupted.

New Delhi: Moscow-headquarteredRosneft Oil Company on Sunday described the European Union's (EU) latest sanction on Nayara Energy's 20-million tonne refinery in Vadinar, Gujarat as 'unjustified and illegal'. 'The Nayara Energy refinery is a strategically important asset for the Indian energy industry, providing a stable supply of petroleum products to the country's domestic market,' the Russian state-owned energy major said in a statement on Sunday. 'The imposition of sanctions against the refinery directly threatens India's energy security and will have a negative impact on its economy.' Rosneft also said that Nayara Energy–in which it holds 49% stake–will take steps to protect the interests of its shareholders and consumers. 'We are counting on the fact that Nayara Energy will take measures to protect the legitimate interests of its shareholders and consumers, which will be supported by the governments of Russia and India,' it said. Rosneft emphasized that it is not a controlling shareholder of Nayara Energy–the company's share in the authorized capital of the enterprise is less than 50%. The enterprise is managed by an independent board of directors, it said. On Friday, in an attempt to target Russia's ability to raise revenues from its oil and energy sector as it wages war with Ukraine, the EU unveiled sanctions on Nayara's Vadinar refinery and also lowered the price cap on Russian oil by 15% to $47.6 per barrel from $60. Among other steps, it also imposed sanctions on more 'shadow fleet ships', which are largely used for moving crude oil from Russia. Rosneft's statement on Sunday further said that the EU's grounds for imposing sanctions are completely far-fetched and false in content. Nayara Energy is an Indian legal entity whose economic activity is aimed at the development of its asset. The entity is taxed entirely in India, it said, while adding that Nayara Energy shareholders have never received dividend payments and the accumulated profits have been used exclusively for the development of the refinery and petrochemicals and the company's retail network in India. The statement added that these sanctions are examples of extraterritorial implementation of politically motivated restrictions that blatantly violate international law and infringe on the economic interests of a sovereign state. To be sure, Nayara has the largest private sector retail fuel network of the country with about 6,500 fuel bunks, out of the total of about 90,000 petrol pumps in India–a market dominated by state-owned oil and gas companies. The statement further said such actions of the EU demonstrate complete disregard not only for international law, but also for the sovereignty of third countries. 'Rosneft views these sanctions as part of the EU's destructive policy aimed at destabilizing global energy markets. The restrictions on Nayara Energy are yet another example of the EU's use of unfair competition practices,' said the Russian energy major. The statement by the Council of European Union had also said on Friday: 'The bloc will ban the import of 'refined petroleum products made from Russian crude oil and coming from any third country – with the exception of Canada, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States – thereby preventing Russia's crude oil from reaching the EU market through the back door'. Following the EU's move, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson of the ministry of external affairs, said in a statement late on Friday night that India does not subscribe to any unilateral sanction measures. 'We are a responsible actor and remain fully committed to our legal obligations,' he said. The MEA spokesperson said that the government of India considers the provision of energy security a responsibility of paramount importance to meet the basic needs of its citizens. "We would stress that there should be no double standards, especially when it comes to energy trade," Jaiswal added.

'Rosneft Oil Company considers the European Union's decision to impose restrictive measures on the Indian refinery of Nayara Energy as unjustified and illegal," it said in a statement. 'These sanctions are yet another example of extraterritorial implementation of politically motivated restrictions that blatantly violate international law and infringe on the economic interests of a sovereign state." The European Union on Friday imposed sanctions on the Indian oil refinery of Rosneft and lowered the oil price cap, as part of a new raft of measures against Russia over its war in Ukraine. The fresh sanctions package on Russia included new banking restrictions and curbs on fuels made from Russian crude oil. The lowered oil price cap – currently set at USD 60 per barrel – means Russia will be forced to sell its crude at reduced rates to buyers like India. As the second-largest purchaser of Russian oil, India stands to benefit from this move. Russian crude currently accounts for nearly 40 per cent of India's total oil imports. Citizens group condemn incidents targeting Bengali-speaking migrants
New Delhi, Jul 20 (PTI) A group of prominent citizens under the banner Bharatiya Bhasha Samooh on Sunday expressed concern over the recent incidents related to Bengali-speaking migrant labourers in various parts of the country. The group said it believed that linguistic attack is a 'serious threat to the diversity of our country". 'In the last one month, there have been reports from various parts of the country that Bengali-speaking migrant labourers are being harassed, beaten, arrested, deported to Bangladesh, and not released despite valid identity documents being shown to the police," the group said in a statement. The group feels that the only 'crime" of Bengali-speaking people is that they speak in their mother tongue. It claimed that migrant workers from Delhi, Maharashtra and Odisha were directly sent to Bangladesh despite possessing valid Aadhaar and PAN cards. 'We strongly condemn the arrest and harassment of these Bengali-speaking citizens. These actions violate the rights of migrant workers guaranteed by the Indian Constitution, and their fundamental rights,� such as the right to equality, the right to life and personal liberty, and social security for inter-state migrant workers," the statement said. The signatories to the statement include economist Jayati Ghosh, and activists Shabnam Hashmi, Sandeep Pandey, Subhash Gatade, and Anil Chamadia.
