Iran's Pezeshkian injured in Israel's June 16 strike
Shafaq News – Tehran
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian sustained a minor leg injury during Israel's June 16 airstrike on a high-level meeting of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, the semi-official Fars News Agency reported on Sunday.
The strike hit a secure government compound hosting top Iranian officials, including the heads of all three branches of government. Fars noted that Pezeshkian and others took shelter in underground chambers and evacuated through a designated emergency route after the blast wounded several individuals.
According to the report, Israel used six precision-guided munitions aimed at exits and ventilation shafts, apparently designed to trap officials inside and cripple the compound. Power was immediately cut, but the delegation escaped through a reinforced corridor.
Iran has launched an internal investigation into a suspected security breach, Fars affirmed, hinting at possible 'insider intelligence' behind the operation and comparing the strike's sophistication to Israel's past assassination of Hezbollah's Hassan Nasrallah.
In a recent virtual interview with American Commentator Tucker Carlson, Pezeshkian accused Israel of trying to assassinate him, asserting, 'They moved in that direction, but they failed.'
The 12-day war between Iran and Israel, which erupted on June 13, caused heavy casualties and widespread infrastructure damage. The United States also entered the conflict, conducting strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

Syria battles sixth day of raging Latakia wildfires
Shafaq News – Latakia Syrian Civil Defense teams entered their sixth day battling fierce wildfires in the Latakia countryside, facing extreme weather, rugged terrain, and remnants of war, while receiving support from neighboring countries, including Turkiye, Lebanon, and Jordan. A Shafaq News field team accompanied the firefighters on the ground, documenting the extensive destruction as flames devoured thousands of trees and vast forested areas in one of Syria's richest natural woodland regions. Moaz al-Sayyed, a member of the Civil Defense, told Shafaq News that steep slopes, active winds, high temperatures, and the presence of landmines from past conflicts have made firefighting operations both difficult and dangerous. 'The mountainous terrain—composed of valleys and ridges—combined with poor infrastructure and limited access routes, is restricting the teams' ability to contain the fires effectively.' He noted that crews are currently prioritizing efforts to stop the flames from reaching the protected Al-Farnlaq Nature Reserve, considered one of Syria's most biodiverse forest zones. — Raed Al Saleh ( رائد الصالح ) (@RaedAlSaleh3) July 7, 2025 On Monday, Civil Defense teams evacuated the village of Al-Ghassaniyeh (Falaq) in the Ras al-Basit area after strong winds pushed the fire dangerously close to residential homes. Meanwhile, Syria's Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, Raed al-Saleh, confirmed that the government has formally requested assistance from the European Union. He said Cypriot firefighting aircraft would join suppression efforts starting today. Al-Saleh reported that more than 10,000 hectares have been damaged so far, calling it 'a true environmental disaster.' He asserted that authorities are coordinating with local and international agencies to implement short-term, medium-term, and long-term reforestation and recovery plans. According to official figures, Turkiye has sent 16 specialized firefighting teams, Jordan has deployed six helicopters and support crews, and Lebanon has contributed two firefighting helicopters. More than 80 field units, backed by approximately 180 firefighting vehicles, are operating under a central command center established by the Ministry of Emergency in coordination with other ministries and relevant agencies. Syrian army units—both ground and air—have also joined the operation, alongside local volunteers and civil society organizations.

Autonomous Administration offers help as wildfires ravage Syria's coastal forests
Shafaq News – Qamishli The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria announced on Tuesday its readiness to assist in extinguishing the wildfires that have swept across Syria's coastal forests in recent days, causing significant destruction to vegetation and raising fears of worsening environmental and economic damage. In a statement, the Environmental Authority of the Autonomous Administration described the fires as 'an escalating environmental disaster whose consequences go beyond natural impact.' It expressed solidarity with residents of the affected areas and pledged to provide 'all possible forms of assistance to contain the fires and prevent their spread.' The Authority also called on the international community and environmental organizations to intervene and support ongoing efforts to protect Syria's forests and prevent future disasters. Syrian Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, Raed al-Saleh, previously confirmed that Damascus had requested support from the European Union to combat the blazes, which have continued for a sixth consecutive day in the Latakia countryside. UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria, Adam Abdelmoula, stated that the fast-moving fires in northwestern Latakia had forced hundreds of families to flee their homes, while large areas of farmland and vital infrastructure have been destroyed. He added that UN teams are conducting emergency assessments to gauge the scale of the disaster and identify the most urgent humanitarian needs. Firefighting teams from Turkiye and Jordan have joined Syrian Civil Defense efforts, providing aerial support with helicopters. The blaze has already destroyed hundreds of thousands of trees across an estimated 10,000 hectares (about 38.6 square miles). Syrian Civil Defense teams warned that unexploded ordnance left behind from the country's 14-year conflict may be present in some of the affected forested areas, complicating containment and evacuation operations.

Joint Iraqi–Peshmerga offensive targets ISIS in Kirkuk
Shafaq News – Kirkuk/Erbil Iraqi forces and Kurdish Peshmerga launched a wide-scale security operation on Sunday in the Qarachogh mountain range, northwest of Kirkuk, following reported movements by ISIS remnants in the rugged area over recent days, A senior security source told Shafaq News. 'The operation is based on precise intelligence that also helped identify suspected hideouts and tunnels believed to be used by the militants,' the source confirmed. The operation is designed to hunt down ISIS remnants, destroy their infrastructure, and prevent any renewed insurgent activity in the region. The effort is being coordinated between the Iraqi Army and the Peshmerga under the supervision of joint operations command centers. The Qarachogh Mountains, straddling the border between Kirkuk and Erbil provinces, remain a strategic hotspot, frequently witnessing military campaigns aimed at denying ISIS fighters the ability to regroup and launch attacks on nearby villages and security positions.
