Celtic star Payton is diagnosed with dementia aged 57
The striker has been diagnosed with early-onset form of the killer condition that has struck several footballers including Hoops legend Billy McNeill.
Mr Payton who played for the Parkhead club in the 90s is convinced playing football has caused his serious health problem.
He said: 'I was just experiencing the usual symptoms - forgetfulness, loss of memory and headaches, but I was n't expecting to have early onset dementia,
'It's properly frightening, you just don't know what's coming down the line.
'My partner more or less manages my day-to-day life, so I know exactly what I'm doing. where I need to be so I don't forget anything.
'The neurologist who did my scan said there are 68 tracts in the brain and 27 of mine are damaged.
'That's half the brain that's damaged.
'The neurologist said it's from football, there's no other thing it can be.'
He said that during his playing career he spent hours on end practicing heading footballs.
Now he has problems remembering what he's eaten just an hour before.
Mr Payton added: 'It was just header, header, bang, bang, bang.
'We'd do it every day, sometimes for an hour and a half.
'I must have headed the ball about 10,000 times, hence the fact I've ended with early onset dementia at 57.'
Several players from Celtic's 'Lisbon Lions' team, who won the European Cup in 1967, have been diagnosed with dementia, including Bertie Auld and Billy McNeill.
The former died at 83 after being diagnosed with dementia five months before his passing, while the latter died in 2019 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2010.
Lisbon winning goal scorer Stevie Chalmers also died from the condition.
In Scotland charities and loved ones have demanded more help for footie legends with dementia amid concerns they are missing out on aid available to ex-stars in England.
Hundreds of families of former players battling the condition down south have benefited from a £1.5million fund set up with English Premier League cash but there is no comparable scheme here.
The pleas for support came after Scotland's joint-top goal scorer Denis Law and ex-Aberdeen boss Jimmy Calderwood became the latest heroes to lose their fights with the memory-robbing disease.
Battle Against Dementia charity chief Douglas McCluskey urged game bosses to find more cash - amid links between heading a football repeatedly and brain damage.
He has campaigned alongside the family of former Celtic captain and manager Billy McNeill.
Their Billy Against Dementia fund have raised tens of thousands of pounds via raffles, T-shirt sales, charity golf tournaments and gala dinners.

UNA Strassen 0 Dundee United 1 (0-2 agg): Iurie Iovu's thumping effort keeps European dream alive for Jim Goodwin's men
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FORTY-ONE years ago Dundee United beat Rapid Vienna to reach the European Cup semi-finals. If, as expected. Rapid get through, United will head to the Austrian capital next week for a rematch with a Conference League play-off clash at stake. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Dundee United players celebrate winner in Luxembourg Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 2 Iovu powered home a header at the back post Credit: Shutterstock Editorial Iurie Iovu's 64th minute header settled the nerves of the 1,000 Arabs fans in the stands in Luxembourg last night. Until then Jim Goodwin's newlook side - 1-0 winners in the first leg - never looked completely assured of a passage into the third qualifying round. Rangers and Aberdeen had suffered shocks in the country before but United escaped unscathed. Incredibly it was their first Euro victory since the 17-0 aggregate win over Andorran minnows Principat back in 1997. It often wasn't a thing of beauty as they were pushed all the way by a Strassen side that finished second in their league last term but still have never scored in Europe. While stopper Iovu grabbed the headlines, this victory was about Craig Sibbald's display. He'd sat things out last week as Goodwin named United's first ever starting line-up without a Scot. But he showed just how important he will be this season with a dominant display. The ex-Falkirk midfielder battled away tirelessly and was often the man breaking up Strassen attacks and teeing up dangerous moments for United. One thing is for sure though - United will have to raise their game at the Allianz Stadion for the first leg. Jim Goodwin on THAT Darvel defeat, Aberdeen axe and rebuilding his career at Dundee United On Thursday, they often looked like what they are - a side still getting to know one another after 11 new arrivals in the summer. The clash was played 30 miles from Strassen's home ground at the 3,500-capacity Stade Municipal de la Ville in Differdange. United sold out their allocation and their fans made it feel more like a home game. Iovu might have opened the scoring earlier than he did after being picked out by Kristijan Trapanovski's corner just three minutes in. The unmarked Moldovan should have done better than head over from inside the box. It soon became apparent United wouldn't have it their own way as much like the first leg Strassen looked dangerous on the attack against United's high line. After Trapanovski was booked in the fifth minute Zachary Hadji drilled straight at Yevhenii Kucherenko when the free-kick was tapped to him. Moments later Ukraine goalie Kucherenko raced off his line to reach the ball on the edge of the area before Matheus De Souza then Daryl Myre drilled over. Sibbald started a brilliant sweeping move that should have ended with a goal when Vicko Sevelj picked out Zac Sapsford but the Aussie - who scored the first leg winner - got his timing horribly wrong and couldn't finish. Icelandic ref Vilhjalmur Thorarinsson was quick to flash Sibbald a yellow for booting the ball away but it didn't dim Sibbald's will to win. More quick-thinking saw him tee up Ivan Dolcek, whose shot was well saved by Koray Ozcan. There was a blow for United before the break when Trapanovski chased a ball towards the corner then pulled up and immediately signalled his hamstring had gone again. After two similar injuries last season the Macedonian had talked before the game about how he'd done all he could during the summer to ensure he'd return as fit as possible. He was replaced by Max Watters, who had been named on the bench after overcoming the knee injury he'd picked up in the first leg. Goodwin swapped Dolcek for Isaac Pappoe but the second half started much the same as the first, with Strassen's Ricardo Delgado firing wide. Neither side was managing to string many passes together and at times it was poor stuff. But after Pappoe fired straight at Ozcan the on-loan Ferencvaros midfielder played a part in the goal. He won a free-kick which saw Sapsford float a ball to the back post and Iovu did what he couldn't in the first half and nodded home. Dundee Utd player ratings DUNDEE UNITED: Kucherenko 6, Esselink 6, Iovu 7, Sevelj 6, Trapanovski 3 (Watters, 41 4), Camara 6, Sapsford 7 (Stirton, 78 4), Ferry 6, Sibbald 8, Dolcek 3 (Pappoe, 46 5), Keresztes 6. Justin Timberlake diagnosed with 'debilitating' disease as he shares health battle
Justin Timberlake has taken to social media to share that he has been diagnosed with Lyme disease, just one day after the end of his Forget Tomorrow World Tour. Justin Timberlake has opened up about his health struggles, revealing he suffers from a "relentlessly debilitating" illness. The disclosure came shortly after the ex-NSync star concluded his Forget Tomorrow World Tour. At 44, Justin turned to social media on Thursday to share his diagnosis of Lyme disease with his followers. In an Instagram post, he reflected: "As I'm reflecting on the tour and festival tour - I want to tell you a little bit about what's going on with me. "Among other things, I've been battling some health issues, and was diagnosed with Lyme disease - which I don't say so you feel bad for me - but to shed some light on what I've been up against behind the scenes, reports the Mirror. "If you've experienced this disease or know someone who has - then you're aware: living with this can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically." He shared his initial reaction to the diagnosis: "When I first got the diagnosis I was shocked for sure. But, at least I could understand why I would be onstage and in a massive amount of nerve pain or, just feeling crazy fatigue or sickness. I was faced with a personal decision. Stop touring? Or, keep going and figure it out." The pop icon explained that he chose to press on with performances because "the joy that performing brings me far outweighs the fleeting stress my body was feeling". He also expressed his contentment with his choice, saying, "I am so glad I kept going". He revealed that his choice demonstrated his "mental resilience" whilst creating far happier memories for himself and the audience - an experience he vows will remain with him forever. I am trying to be more transparent about my struggles so that they aren't misinterpreted." In his heartfelt message, he pledged to support others battling the condition. Justin then expressed gratitude to everyone who helped make his touring dreams a reality, saying: "There really is no way to put into words the feeling of being on a stage and getting to share the experience of live music with all of you. "It's a vibration of frequency that is unmatched. Sacred to me. I honestly don't know what my future is onstage but I'll always cherish this run! And all of them before! It's been the stuff of LEGEND for me." Concluding his message, Justin paid tribute to his wife and children, declaring: "You are my heart and my home. I'm on my way." His devoted followers were swift to shower him with support in the comments. One fan wrote: "Thank you for being open and thank you for pushing through to continue performing! I saw you 3x this tour and each time was phenomenal! I wish I could've seen more shows! We all love you and thank you for giving us all you do!".
