‘We don't want our music killing people': Bay Area band leaves Spotify over CEO's AI weapons deal

Deerhoof, the long-running San Francisco indie rock band known for its eclectic sound and DIY ethos, announced it will remove its entire music catalog from Spotify, citing ethical concerns over the streaming platform's leadership and its ties to military artificial intelligence technology. The band's decision follows reports that Daniel Ek, Spotify's co-founder and chief executive, has invested approximately $700 million into Helsing, a European defense technology company developing AI software for military use. Ek, who also serves as chairman of Helsing, made the investment through his firm Prima Materia, which led a recent funding round in the company. ''Daniel Ek uses $700 million of his Spotify fortune to become chairman of AI battle tech company' was not a headline we enjoyed reading this week,' the band wrote in a statement posted to social media Monday, June 30. 'We don't want our music killing people. We don't want our success being tied to AI battle tech.' Deerhoof, who recently released the album 'Noble and Godlike in Ruin,' emphasized that the decision was made easier by the fact that Spotify constitutes a relatively small part of their income. 'Spotify only pays a pittance anyway, and we earn a lot more from touring,' they wrote, while acknowledging the economic challenges other artists might face in making a similar move. The band also offered a broader critique of Spotify and its impact on artists. 'Spotify is flushing itself down the toilet,' they said. 'Eventually artists will want to leave this already widely hated data-mining scam masquerading as a 'music company.'' Deerhoof 's label, Joyful Noise Recordings, voiced support for the decision. 'As a label, we too are sickened by the fact that our releases have inadvertently contributed to the global war machine,' the label wrote in a separate statement. 'We serve the artist. It is ultimately their decision to present their material on whichever platforms they choose. It is with this in mind that we hold no judgement towards any artist that wishes to keep their music on the platform.' The move places Deerhoof among a small but vocal group of artists who have boycotted Spotify in recent years. Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Graham Nash previously pulled their catalogs from the platform over its exclusive deal with podcaster Joe Rogan, though most have since returned. While the exact timeline for their music's removal remains unclear, the band said takedowns will happen 'as soon as possible,' and thanked their labels for assisting with the process and absorbing the financial impact. 'We know we are asking them to make a sacrifice, and it means a lot to us,' they wrote.

Deerhoof Are ‘Quitting Spotify' Over CEO Investing in ‘AI Battle Tech' Company

Deerhoof announced they are leaving Spotify after its CEO, Daniel Ek, invested nearly $700 million in defense company Helsing, which makes military drones and AI defense software. 'We don't want our music killing people,' the band said in a statement, explaining why they're planning on taking all of their music off the streaming platform. 'We don't want our success being tied to AI battle tech.' Spotify did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone's request for comment. More from Rolling Stone Bailey Zimmerman Announces Album 'Different Night Same Rodeo' Riley Green, Shaboozey, Kelsea Ballerini Lead 2025 Spotify House Lineup at CMA Fest Morgan Wallen's New Album Is Already Spotify's Most-Streamed Country Album of 2025 Earlier this month, the European startup company Helsing announced that it had raised 600 million euros ($693.6 million) in a round of funding, which was led by venture capital firm Prima Materia, co-founded by Ek, and where he also serves as chairman of Helsing, as CNBC notes. Prima Materia has been investing in Helsing since 2021. The band continued in their statement: 'AI battle tech is clearly emerging as the hot new big ticket item for the super-rich. It's increasingly clear that the military and police exist primarily as the security detail for the billionaire class. The more of the killing you can get computers to do, the better your bottom line. Computerized targeting, computerized extermination, computerized destabilization for profit, successfully tested on the people of Gaza, also finally solves the perennial inconvenience to war-makers–It takes human compassion and morality out of the equation.' Deerhoof accused Spotify of 'flushing itself down the toilet,' adding: 'Eventually artists will want to leave this already widely hated data-mining scam masquerading as a 'music company.' It's creepy for users and crappy for artists. Music-making lasts forever but this or that digital get-rich-quick scheme is sure to become obsolete.' They added: 'One of the claims often made about Spotify is that it theoretically makes one's music discoverable by anyone who signs up, no matter how remote they may be from the self-proclaimed centers of hipness. But just because someone is far from Western gatekeepers does not mean they lack culture, or need to hear our band. Deerhoof is a small mom and pop operation, and know when enough is enough. We aren't capitalists, and don't wish to take over the world. Especially if the price of 'discoverability' is letting oligarchs fill the globe with computerized weaponry, we're going to pass on the supposed benefits.' Deerhoof noted they were not sure how soon their music would be removed from the platform, but that they plan to have it done 'as soon as possible,' and that their various labels are supporting them in their decision. The band have released 20 albums since their 1996 debut, Dirt Pirate Creed, via multiple indie labels, including Kill Rock Stars, Polyvinyl, and Joyful Noise Recordings, who will have to each remove the group's music from Spotify.
