While it's hard to take a ton of stock into preseason polls, Notre Dame is still ranked as the No. 5 team in the first USA TODAY US LBM Coaches Poll of the 2025 season.
The Irish are behind just a few schools: Texas, Ohio State, Penn State, and Georgia but will have a chance to move up the poll, especially considering it's first two games are against No. 10 Miami on the road and No. 21 Texas A&M at home. They'll play No. 25 Boise State in the middle of the season as well.
The rest of the top-10 is Clemson, Oregon, Alabama and LSU. Other teams of note are Illinois at No. 12, Michigan at No. 14, and Indiana at No. 19.
Expectations are still very high in South Bend, despite some questions marks at quarterback and on the offensive line. Like last year, the defense is expected the carry the team until the offense gets more comfortable. The tough early schedule will go a long ways into how people will perceive Notre Dame, as they start off with two tough contests.

When are the AP preseason Top 25 college football rankings released? Will Texas be No. 1?

Find out the release date for the 2025 preseason AP Top 25 Ranking The preseason US LBM Coaches Poll is out and for the first time in school history, the Texas Longhorns are ranked No. 1. The ranking, combined with Ohio State's No. 2 ranking, makes history. The Longhorns-Buckeyes matchup will be the first No. 1 vs. No. 2 Week 1 matchup in history. But what about the AP Top 25 Ranking? Is Texas No. 1 in it? The answer is - we don't know yet. The AP Poll traditionally comes out after the Coaches Poll, whether it is preseason or during the year. When is the AP Top 25 college football rankings released? The AP will reveal its Top 25 college football rankings on Monday, August 11 around Noon ET. The poll will populate the rankings link of USA TODAY Sports (and other sites) soon after. The rankings will also be posted on X/Twitter. How often does the Preseason No. 1 win the National Title? Not much. Since the year 2000, only USC (2004) and Alabama (2017) have started and ended the season No. 1. The '17 Alabama team is the only team to stay No. 1 the entire campaign. A team does want to start in the Top 5 though. Over the past decade, only one team, LSU (2019), was ranked outside the Top 5 in the preseason AP Poll and the Tigers were No. 6. What if Texas is No. 1 in the preseason AP Top 25? It will be a nice feather in the cap of the program. It is like good PR. More fans, analysts and TV pundits will be talking about the Longhorns. Will it add pressure? Maybe. We'll see what this team is really made of in Columbus, OH on Aug. 30.

Aaron Judge returns from IL to Yankees lineup with New York mired in a 4-game losing streak

A change of venue Monday was not the cure for what's ailing the New York Yankees. But help is on the way. Manager Aaron Boone announced Monday after an 8-5 loss to the Texas Rangers that Aaron Judge would return to the lineup Tuesday after missing 10 games with a flexor strain in his right elbow. Judge was, indeed, listed in the Yankees lineup Tuesday as the designated hitter. He's batting in his usual spot at No. 3 in the order. He's not yet ready to return to his position in the outfield. Judge returns to the lineup on the heels of a four-game Yankees losing streak, including Monday's walk-off loss to the Rangers in extra innings. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Yankees blow lead, lose on walk-off The Yankees struck first with a leadoff home run by Paul Goldschmidt, then took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the second inning. But the Rangers batted around in the second to take a 4-3 lead. The Yankees retook the lead and held a 5-4 advantage heading into the bottom of the ninth. There, pinch hitter Joc Pederson sent it to extras. With the bases empty and one out, Pederson launched a 2-1 Devin Williams changeup over the plate into the right-field stands to tie the game at 5-5. The blown save was the third of the season for Williams, a two-time All-Star and lights-out closer with the Milwaukee Brewers. With Pederson's home run, Williams' ERA in his first season in New York inflated to 5.10. The blast set up Josh Jung for his 10th-inning heroics. With a man on second and two outs, the Yankees intentionally walked Wyatt Langford to get to Jung in the six slot. Reliever Jake Bird left a 1-1 sinker thigh-high and just inside that Jung turned on. The result was a no-doubt home run into the left-field stands that ended the game. Yankees in free fall, face critical games vs. Rangers The loss was the Yankees' fourth straight following an unprecedented three-game sweep at the hands of the Miami Marlins. They're now 7-10 since the All-Star break. The defeat dropped the once first-place Yankees to 60-53, 5.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East and 2.5 games behind the rival Boston Red Sox, who won their sixth straight game Monday night. It also left them with a 1.5-game cushion over the Rangers and in a tie with the Seattle Mariners for the last wild-card spot in the American League. This three-game series against the Rangers could end up proving critical for the postseason standings, and it's already going bad for New York. Can Judge help Yankees turn things around? Judge hasn't played since July 25 with the elbow injury that landed him on the injured list. He took batting practice over the weekend and will return to the lineup Tuesday on his first day of eligibility. As the Yankees face a multitude of problems, Judge's return can't come soon enough.

Netflix's Next Sports Epic: The Cowboys, Jerry Jones, And A Dynasty That Defined The NFL

The Dallas Cowboys have never been just another football team. Arguably more so than any other franchise in the NFL, the Cowboys are a cultural force and a perfect manifestation of America's obsession with what happens on the gridiron. That legacy gets the deep-dive treatment this month in Netflix's new docuseries "America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys" — a story about ambition, swagger, and the high-stakes bets that built a football empire. Dropping this weekend (on August 9), the series chronicles Jerry Jones' 1989 purchase of the then-struggling Cowboys and how that gamble transformed the NFL forever. Under Jones' watch, the Cowboys became not only three-time Super Bowl champions in the '90s but also the most valuable sports franchise on the planet. The series blends never-before-seen footage with interviews from players, coaches, and even fans to tell the story of how calculated risks paid off in spectacular fashion. Basically, the series is built around the Cowboys' inexorable march toward dominance — a period when they went from underperformers to winning multiple Super Bowls. Directed by the Emmy-winning team behind "Wild Wild Country," Netflix's docuseries unpacks how Jones reshaped not just a team, but the entire business of sports. Essentially, he risked his fortune to buy the team and went on to oust a legendary coach. Jones also revolutionized marketing and revenue streams through aggressive sponsorship deals and stadium innovations. This is a business story, in other words, as much as it is one about sports. Also in the docuseries, viewers will hear from players like Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, and Deion Sanders, while head coaches Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer recount the highs and lows of steering the team through an era of intense competition and media scrutiny. The series likewise features insights from big-name fans like former President George W. Bush and Nike co-founder Phil Knight, who reflect on the Cowboys' place in American culture. All of that, combined with archival footage, provides fascinating insight about "America's Team," one whose driving force can probably be summed up best by a quote from former quarterback Roger Staubach: "There are no traffic jams along the extra mile." With the franchise now worth more than $10 billion, "America's Team: The Gamble and His Cowboys" shows exactly how the groundwork for that success was laid in the '90s. And when you're finished watching, don't forget about the halftime performers: Netflix also has "America's Sweethearts," a docuseries looking at the Dallas Cowboys cheer squad that just returned for a second season.
