Etihad gears up to welcome over 7m passengers this summer
UAE national carrier Etihad Airways said it is preparing to welcome more than seven million passengers at Zayed International Airport over the busy summer travel period.
In line with its preparations, the airline is advising its guests to plan ahead and take advantage of smart travel tools for a seamless experience at Zayed International Airport
"We are looking forward to hosting millions of guests at Zayed International Airport as they head off on their summer holidays, including those flying on our seasonal routes to Malaga, Antalya, Santorini, Nice, and Mykonos," remarked Shaeb Alnuaimi, Etihad's Director of Airport Operations.
"At every stage of the journey, we're focused on delivering the highest standards of safety, comfort and service. Whether it's our modern fleet, award-winning hospitality, or thoughtful travel experiences, our guests can expect a smooth and enjoyable journey from the moment they check in," he stated.
As part of its preparations, Etihad Airways has compiled essential tips to help guests prepare for their travels:
Flight Information and Updates
Staying informed is essential during busy travel periods. Guests can easily access the latest flight information through the Manage My Booking section on etihad.com or via the mobile app, where they can view or modify flight details, select seats, and access various other services.
Early Check-in Options
To avoid potential queues, guests are strongly encouraged to arrive at the airport at least four hours before departure during peak periods. For added convenience, Etihad offers multiple early check-in options:
Online check-in opens 30 hours before departure and is available through etihad.com or the mobile app. After checking in online, guests can use the many automated self-service bag drops at the terminal, allowing them to weigh and tag their bags and collect their boarding pass in under a minute.
It has several off-airport check-in and bag-drop facilities including Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal; The Fountains – Yas Mall; Mussafah and Al Ain.
Home Check-in and Land & Leave Services
For ultimate convenience, guests can start their journey with home check-in through Morafiq, available up to five hours before departure. Starting from AED185, this service includes baggage check-in, seat selection, and doorstep delivery of boarding passes.
Upon return to Abu Dhabi, the Land & Leave service offers a seamless arrival experience. Guests can proceed directly to their destination while Morafiq delivers their bags to any Abu Dhabi address within three hours of landing.
Pre-purchase Travel Options
Enhanced comfort options are available for purchase on etihad.com for travellers during the busy holiday period. Economy Extra Legroom offers more space to stretch out, while the Neighbour-free Seat option can be selected at least 72 hours prior to departure.
Guests can also enhance their pre-flight experience with First and Business Class Lounge access, available for purchase up to 90 minutes before departure, said the statement.
Baggage Policy
Economy Class guests are permitted 7kg of carry-on baggage, while First and Business Class guests can bring up to 12kg. Cabin baggage must not exceed the dimensions of 56cm height, 36cm depth, and 23cm width. Additional checked baggage allowance can be purchased at special rates through Etihad's website or mobile app before departure.
US Pre-clearance Facility
Travellers to US destinations must check in at Terminal A at least four hours before their flight. First, Business, and The Residence guests should arrive at the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Preclearance facility 90 minutes before departure, while all other guests must arrive two hours before departure. The facility closes one hour before flight departure.

Passenger traffic grew 2% and more than 120,000 flights were recorded during the year. Air cargo volumes exceeded 150,000 tonnes underlining robust activity in the aviation sector. Abri further pointed out that in response to the recent regional crisis, Oman hosted numerous international flights, leading to a 28% increase in air traffic over a 12-day period. In a bid to support growth and enhance service quality, CAA issued new operating permits to 19 foreign airlines in 2024. Significant upgrades were also made to national aviation infrastructure, including installation of a new air navigation radar in Jalan Bani Bu Ali to bolster airspace surveillance. Operational manuals were implemented at both Duqm and Marmul airports, while aviation security and cybersecurity policies were ratified to ensure high safety standards. The national meteorological monitoring network expanded to 80 stations, reinforcing the sultanate's climate and weather forecasting capabilities. Don't Ignore the Signs — Pulmonary Embolism Case Reinforces Importance of Pre-Travel Medical Advice Ras Al Khaimah, UAE: As international travel picks up during the summer holidays, RAK Hospital is urging travelers — particularly those with underlying health conditions — to consult their physicians before long flights. The advisory follows a recent emergency case where a male patient developed a pulmonary embolism (PE) — a potentially life-threatening blood clot in the lungs — days after returning from an 8-hour flight from the UK. The patient arrived at RAK Hospital's Emergency Department with persistent right-sided chest pain that had lasted three days. A CT pulmonary angiography confirmed acute pulmonary embolism, and the patient was admitted to the ICU for monitoring and treatment with anticoagulants. Fortunately, he was in stable condition and recovered well, but the case serves as a serious reminder of the health risks associated with prolonged immobility during air travel. 'Pulmonary embolism often begins as a blood clot in the leg — a condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) — which can travel to the lungs and block blood flow,' explained Dr. Suha Alsheikh Suleman, Specialist Pulmonologist at RAK Hospital. 'Long-haul flights, where passengers remain seated for extended periods with limited movement, significantly increase this risk — especially in individuals who are obese, pregnant, have heart or lung conditions, clotting disorders, or a prior history of thrombosis.' Travelers are strongly advised to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as chest pain or tightness, shortness of breath, coughing (sometimes with blood), rapid heartbeat or palpitations, pain, redness or swelling in one leg, or lightheadedness and fainting after a flight. These could be warning signs of pulmonary embolism (PE) — a serious condition that occurs when a blood clot travels to the lungs, blocking blood flow and potentially leading to severe complications or even death if left untreated. 'If ignored, pulmonary embolism can result in lung damage, heart strain, or even sudden death. Recognizing symptoms early and acting quickly can be lifesaving,' added Dr. Suha. How to Stay Safe While Flying: RAK Hospital emphasizes that high-risk individuals should take the following precautions, especially before long-haul travel: Consult your physician before travel: Consult a physician for a 'fit-to-fly' clearance especially if you have chronic respiratory, heart conditions, or a history of PE or DVT Move frequently: Walk or stretch your legs every 1–2 hours during flights Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol, caffeine, and smoking Wear compression stockings: Particularly for individuals with obesity, cancer, pregnancy, or history of clots Avoid sudden temperature shifts: Travelers moving between extreme heat and cold (or vice versa) are at a higher risk of dehydration and increased blood viscosity, which can elevate the chances of developing DVT and pulmonary embolism. They are advised to stay well-hydrated and avoid prolonged sitting. 'We advise all patients with known risk factors to have a proper medical consultation before travel. A simple check-up can prevent serious in-flight or post-flight complications,' said Dr. Suha. 'In cases like this, the goal of treatment is to prevent the enlargement of the existing clot and to stop the formation of new clots.' The patient has since been discharged in stable condition and prescribed blood-thinning medication for the next three months. Dubai's new road upgrade: Smoother flow between Sheikh Zayed, Al Wasl
Image credit: WAM/Website Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the launch of the Al Safa Street Improvement Project, a key infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving traffic flow, supporting urban growth, and enhancing overall quality of life in one of Dubai's most vibrant districts. Read- The project extends over a 1,500-metre stretch of Al Safa Street, from its intersection with Sheikh Zayed Road to its junction with Al Wasl Street. It forms a core part of RTA's broader master plan to modernise the city's transport infrastructure in line with Dubai's rapid population growth and urban expansion. Bridges, tunnels, and a traffic revolution The ambitious development includes the construction of two new bridges and two tunnels, totalling 3,120 metres in combined length. It will also see the widening of surface roads, upgraded intersections, and the installation of advanced traffic signal systems. Once completed, the improvements will significantly cut travel times on Al Safa Street—from 12 minutes to just 3 minutes—and will double traffic capacity from 6,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of 'Al Safa Street Improvement Project is part of RTA's master plan to enhance the road network in the area, including the development of Umm Suqeim and Al Wasl Streets,' he said. Supporting a thriving urban hub The upgraded route passes through one of Dubai's busiest districts, home to major destinations such as City Walk, Coca-Cola Arena, top-tier schools, residential communities, and luxury hotels. Al Tayer noted that the project enhances access to Downtown Dubai and connects with Financial Centre Street, an area inhabited by over one million residents. 'This district hosts a variety of tourism, cultural, and sporting events,' he added. 'It's essential that we support it with infrastructure that enables fluid movement and sustainable growth.' Design that blends efficiency with aesthetics Beyond functional upgrades, the project places strong emphasis on aesthetic and community-centric features. Plans include dedicated pedestrian walkways, cycling tracks, and vibrant urban spaces designed to promote interaction and enrich the public realm. Landscaping will also be integrated to soften the urban environment and improve livability. Key infrastructure features According to Al Tayer, the development encompasses the following major construction elements: Bridge 1: A four-lane bridge measuring 1,005 metres will serve traffic coming from Al Wasl Street toward Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Street. It will have an estimated capacity of 6,400 vehicles per hour. Bridge 2: This two-lane, 360-metre bridge will facilitate traffic from Al Satwa Road to Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Street. Capacity is estimated at 2,800 vehicles per hour. Tunnel 1: Spanning 1,005 metres with two lanes, this tunnel will support traffic moving from Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Street toward Al Wasl Street. It will handle 3,200 vehicles per hour. Tunnel 2: Located at the intersection of Al Wasl and Al Safa Streets, the 750-metre tunnel will feature two lanes in each direction and accommodate a total of 6,400 vehicles per hour. In addition, Al Safa Street will be widened from three signalized lanes in each direction to four lanes, two of which will allow free-flow traffic and two controlled by signals. Beyond the asphalt: Lighting, drainage, and utilities The project also includes: Upgraded lighting systems Directional signage Rainwater drainage infrastructure Relocation and protection of utilities These enhancements will contribute to a safer, more efficient roadway while maintaining service continuity for surrounding developments. Part of a larger network upgrade The Al Safa Street project is one piece of a multi-phase plan by RTA to transform Dubai's arterial corridors. Al Wasl Street overhaul Spanning 15 km from Umm Suqeim Street to 2nd December Street, the Al Wasl Street Development Project will include: Six upgraded intersections Five new tunnels totaling 3,850 metres Widening the road from two to three lanes per direction Travel time reduction of 50 per cent Capacity increase from 8,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour Umm Suqeim Street expansion Stretching 6 km from Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road, this project will: Upgrade six major intersections Add four bridges and three tunnels with a total length of 4,100 metres Increase road capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour Reduce travel time between Jumeirah and Al Khail Roads from 20 minutes to 6 minutes Al Tayer emphasised that these interconnected projects will significantly improve connectivity between Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road. 'This network will meet current and future demands while promoting safety, efficiency, and sustainability across Dubai's road system,' he said.
