Orkney 2025: highlights from the opening ceremony

Watch ITV Channel's highlights from the Orkney 2025 opening ceremony. HRH The Princess Royal declared an official start to the 2025 Island Games in Orkney last night (12 July). The Games' opening ceremony saw athletes from across the Channel Islands join more than two thousand others from around the world - swelling the small Scottish island's population by more than 10 percent. They'll spend the next week representing Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney and Sark on an international sporting stage - fighting for victory against athletes from countries as far-flung as Bermuda and the Cayman Islands. Last night's ceremony was a celebration of sport, culture, and island life - featuring a procession by athletes through the centre of the island's town, performances by local schoolchildren, and highland pipe bands. The Games' iconic 'Water Ceremony' tradition also took place, with each team invited to blend together waters from their respective islands within a ceremonial structure. The event's host - television presenter Lorraine Kelly - said the atmosphere at the ceremony was "just electric". "I could really feel the anticipation in the air!", she said, adding "Orkney is my favourite place and I'm so looking forward to watching the Games over the next week". Today sees the start of competition in Badminton, Football, Lawn Bowls, Sailing, and Squash. The triathlon is also taking place.

Glasgow football club receives £2500 to run free camp

The money was awarded as part of the supermarket chain's yearly Scottish Sport Fund initiative, which aims to build a healthier Scotland by helping community sports clubs. Glasgow City Foundation Camps were given the top amount of £2500. Their club, which is a registered Scottish charity, was set up in 2015 to improve the health, education, and well-being of girls and women through sport. They run a football academy for more than 130 girls and work alongside Glasgow City FC, Scotland's leading women's football team. The club said the money will be used to set up an October holiday camp for girls across Glasgow and the west of Scotland. This will give girls the chance to stay fit, gain confidence, and interact with positive role models during the school break. Sarah Crilly, from Glasgow City Foundation, said: "We are so grateful to have received such generous funding from Aldi Scotland. "This support will allow us to run a fully free October holiday camp for girls in our local communities, helping to remove cost barriers and encouraging more girls to participate in football." Other clubs in the region, including Tir Connail Harps and Rottenrow Bluesox Hockey Club, were each given £500. Rottenrow Bluesox Hockey Club (Image: Supplied) Aldi Scotland introduced the Scottish Sport Fund in 2016 to help people of all ages and abilities get involved in physical activities within their communities. Over the past decade, Aldi Scotland has supported over 650 clubs across Scotland, distributing almost £500,000. This fund has helped improve community access to sport across the country. Graham Nicolson, group buying director at Aldi Scotland, said: "Since launching in 2016, the Scottish Sport Fund has supported a diverse range of clubs with vital funding to invest in much-needed equipment and resources. "It's inspiring to see the impact this support has on clubs like Glasgow City Foundation, and how it contributes to encouraging active, healthy lifestyles in communities across Scotland." The fund opens for applications throughout the year in different regions of Scotland, inviting local teams to apply for up to £2,500 in funding. The money helps the clubs cover costs for equipment, training, and other resources necessary for their operation.

Hibs have broken their record transfer fee to sign striker Thibault Klidjé on a three year deal from Swiss Super League side Luzern. The 24-year old forward, who has been capped 18 times for Togo, becomes the Easter Road club's fourth signing of the window following the arrivals of Jamie McGrath, Raphael Sallinger and Josh Mulligan. He previously played in France's Ligue 1 with Bordeaux before signing for Luzern in 2022. Klidjé was not part of the squad though, signing two weeks after the Edinburgh club knocked them out of the competition. How much have Hibs paid for Thibault Klidjé? What was the previous record transfer fee? Hibs have not officially confirmed the transfer fee but have qnnounced that it is a club record. The previous record was held by Ulises de la Cruz for over two decades after the Edinburgh club paid around £700,000 for his services in 2001. The Edinburgh Evening News understands that the Hibees have smashed that record and forked out over £1 million for Klidjé. That makes him the first official seven figure signing by a Scottish club, other than Celtic or Rangers, since Aberdeen paid £1 million to Oldham Athletic to sign Paul Bernard in 1995 - although some signings for 'undisclosed' amounts since then have been rumoured to be above that number. The Togo international joins Hibs off the back of a fruitful season in the Swiss Super League, he had 15 goal contributions in 39 appearances for Luzern last season, scoring 12 as his side finished sixth in the Swiss top-flight. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Across club and country, Klidjé has made over 100 senior appearances and adds an extra dimension to the Hibs front-line. On the international stage, he has earned 18 caps for Togo and scored two goals. What have head coach David Gray and sporting director Malky Mackay said about new Hibs signing Thibault Klidjé? After Klidjé put pen-to-paper, Hibernian FC Head Coach David Gray commented: 'We're delighted to have attracted someone of Thibault's quality to the Football Club. He adds extra pace and trickery to our front line and performed well for Luzern last season, and at 24 has a lot of room for development. We want to help him progress, and look forward to working with him moving forward.' Hibernian FC Sporting Director Malky Mackay added: 'We have been tracking Thibault for a long period of time and are excited to have finally got our man. I would firstly like to thank the Gordon Family and our Board for showing this ambition and investment. 'It's been our aim to continue to add top quality young strikers to our club and we have been given the chance to do that with Thibault. He is a young, driven, ambitious player who importantly wants to come and play for Hibs. We welcome him to Easter Road and look forward to him pulling on the strip.'
