Teen hands over mother's jewellery worth RM140,000 to scammers
Besut deputy police chief Dep Supt Md Sani Md Salleh said the 18-year-old, who is awaiting admission to an institution of higher learning (IPT), lodged a police report on Saturday (July 12) claiming she had been duped.
"The teen received phone calls from three individuals posing as representatives from the e-wallet company and a police officer from Perak on July 1.
"They claimed that her particulars had been misused and she was implicated in fraud and money laundering cases," he said in a statement on Tuesday (July 15).
Md Sani said the victim then handed over her mother's jewellery to an unknown female suspect in a supermarket in Jertih town the next day (July 2).
He said the suspect promised to return the jewellery the same day but later told the teenager that the jewellery had been kept by the Police forensics unit for further investigation.
"The teenager was then told that she would have to pay RM28,000 to retrieve the jewellery. The teenager then lodged a police report upon realising she had been duped," he said.
Following that, police arrested a 37-year-old woman in Kuala Besut on Monday (July 14) and remanded her for four days until Friday to assist in investigations under Section 420 of the Penal Code. – Bernama

NGO: Azam's apology to Teoh family shows compassion
KUALA LUMPUR: The apology tendered by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock showed compassion on part of the graft-busters, a non-governmental organisation leader said today. Rapera Movement founder Datuk Seri Dr Jahaberdeen Mohamed Yunoos said the apology was an exemplary move by Azam. "The apology tendered by Tan Sri Azam Baki to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock and the additional compensation is a good initiative and compassionate move by the MACC. "Though he doesn't have to do so legally, such a compassionate initiative ought to be followed by other government agencies where relevant," he said in a statement today. Earlier, MACC announced that the commission was prepared to offer a goodwill contribution to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock to support the welfare and educational needs of his child. This follows findings from investigations into Teoh's death, which had spanned the past 16 years. Azam acknowledged the outcomes of previous probes, including the Royal Commission of Inquiry in 2011, the Court of Appeal's ruling in 2014, and the most recent police investigation, which had been classified as "No Further Action" (NFA) by the Attorney-General's Chambers. The commission also acknowledged that, on May 12, 2015, the government had paid RM600,000 in compensation to Teoh's family, along with an additional RM60,000 in legal costs as a full and final settlement under Sections 7 and 8 of the Civil Law Act 1956.

Senior Perak cop's teen murder trial: Defence to revise court submission after prosecution shifts stance
IPOH, July 16 — The defence in the trial of DSP Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak, who is accused of killing 17-year-old Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie two years ago, will be filing a new written submission related to Section 300(d) of the Penal Code. Defence counsel M. Athimulan told the High Court here today that they needed to review their previous submissions. 'Our submissions comprised both Section 300(c) and (d) of the Penal Code, but were more concentrated on Section 300(c). However, the prosecution's stand now is that they are relying on Section 300(d). 'This creates a need to revise our entire submissions. In view of that, we are seeking an adjournment to file this new submission, with the court's indulgence, in about six weeks,' he said. The court allowed the adjournment, giving the defence six weeks to file the new written submission, while the prosecution was given four weeks thereafter to respond. Judge Datuk Bhupindar Singh Gucharan Singh Preet fixed October 1 and 2 for the full hearing of submissions from both parties. Deputy Public Prosecutor Afzainizam Abdul Aziz said Section 300(d) was mentioned during the prosecution's opening statement on Nov 5 last year, but the defence's submissions had not focused on that section. 'In our opening statement, we stated that we would be relying on Sections 300(c) and 300(d) of the Penal Code. However, the submissions we received from the defence mainly focused on Section 300(c). 'Therefore, the defence now needs to submit arguments on Section 300(d) as well, to ensure there are no issues if the case proceeds to the appeal stage,' he said when met at the court today. According to the opening statement, Section 300(c) defines murder as an act done with the intention of causing bodily injury, and the injury is sufficient in the ordinary course of nature to cause death. Section 300(d), on the other hand, refers to an act committed with the knowledge that it is so imminently dangerous that it must, in all probability, cause death, even if there is no intention to cause death. The prosecution was conducted by Afzainizam together with Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani, while the accused was represented by lawyers Athimulan, Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid and Aiman Hakim Kamaruzzaman. Mohd Nazri is accused of causing the death of student Muhammad Zaharif Affendi near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Jati here, between 11.55am and 12.32pm on December 15, 2023. The charge is framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty, or a minimum of 30 years and up to 40 years' imprisonment. Johor customs seizes 3.8kg cannabis in drug smuggling busts
JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor Royal Malaysian Customs Department successfully intercepted two separate drug smuggling attempts, confiscating a total of 3.825kg of cannabis in operations conducted in Pontian and Batu Pahat. The first raid occurred on May 21 near Pekan Nanas, Pontian, where customs officers inspected two Pos Laju parcels. Inside, they discovered 130g and 97g of compressed plant material suspected to be cannabis. A man in his 40s, believed to be the courier, was arrested. Further checks led to the discovery of a black bag containing 55g of suspected cannabis, along with three smoking devices and a blender. The total estimated value of the seized items was RM22,860. Authorities also confiscated a motorcycle worth RM10,000. The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. In a second operation on June 5, the Marine Unit of the Batu Pahat Enforcement Branch intercepted an unregistered boat docked in a mangrove swamp near a ferry terminal. Officers found three compressed packages wrapped in Chinese tea packaging, containing 3.063kg of suspected cannabis with an estimated value of RM98,016. The boat, worth RM4,000, was also seized. Johor Customs Director Aminul Izmeer Mohd Sohaimi urged the public to report any smuggling activities via the Customs Toll-Free Line at 1-800-88-8855 or by contacting the nearest Customs office, assuring confidentiality for informants. - Bernama
