They have been using the facility for training sessions for free till now.
"Instead of promoting youngsters who make an effort to undergo rigorous training to win laurels for the state, the govt is trying to make it difficult for them. The Sree Kanteerava Stadium is a govt facility and it's unfair to ask the state or national or international athletes to pay Rs 300 per month or Rs 3,000 per year to train there," a coach, who conducts training sessions at the venue, told TOI.
According to coaches, many students have stopped training at the stadium as they don't want to pay the newly introduced fee. "There are a lot of underprivileged kids who come to train at the stadium and it's a big setback for them. The officials are saying they will waive off the entry fee for deserving candidates but not everyone will be having the BPL cards," they said, adding: "What was more shocking was that DYES even asked the coaches to pay an entry fee.
"
As per the decision taken by the DYES and the Stadium Management Committee, the trainees aged below 16/above 60 and top athletes should pay Rs 300 per month or Rs 3,000 per year. And for those who are above 16 years and below 60, the entry fee is Rs 600 per month and Rs 6,000 per year. The department will charge another Rs 50 as ID card fee. For one day, the entry is Rs 30, states the application form for the ID card, of which TOI has a copy.

The coaches also wondered why the DYES is still restricting access to the field area. "We are forced to pay the entry fee but are allowed to use only the track. The field area is still out of bounds for us. From the hurdles to the starting blocks, the coaches themselves are getting equipment to train the athletes and yet, they are charging an entry fee. From this week, they have made it very strict at the entry gate. It's high time the govt reviewed the decision," they said.
Meanwhile, DYES officials said they will ensure that not a single child who wants to train but is not able to pay the fee will be left out. "We will ensure that all the deserving kids who can't bear the fee will be allowed to train on a case-to-case basis. We have introduced a nominal fee just to streamline the system as there were a lot of coaches who were using the facility and taking hefty fees from their wards," they said.
When asked about the decision to charge entry fee from state, national and international athletes, they said: "We are open to feedback from athletes and coaches and if needed, we can look into their grievances as we have just introduced this new measure."

Tenders floated for two world-class sports complexes in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: In a major push to transform the city into a hub for sports and fitness, the state youth empowerment and sports department has initiated the process to establish two state-of-the-art sports complexes on the public-private partnership (PPP) model. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The department has floated tenders to appoint private agencies for transaction advisory services for projects at Honnaganahatti (off Magadi Road) and Ravuthanahalli (off Tumakuru Road). The move follows chief minister Siddaramaiah's 2024-25 budget announcement that Bengaluru would get four international-standard, multi-sport complexes. "We will establish world-class sports complexes in all four directions — east, west, south, and north — of the city," said R Chethan, commissioner, youth empowerment and sports department. "We have requested the govt to allot land for two more places." The ambitious project is estimated to cost Rs 280 crore and is designed to reshape the city's sporting landscape. It will feature ultramodern outdoor and indoor sports arenas, an adventure sports zone, a sports mall, a sports equipment manufacturing centre, hostels, staff quarters, basic amenities, a hospital, and a fitness and rehabilitation centre. Currently, the department owns the land for both sites. At Honnaganahatti in Bengaluru south taluk, it has around nine acres where a stadium already exists. The facility currently hosts about 500 users per day and includes a 400m athletic track, swimming pool, outdoor gym, mud volleyball court, and a pavilion. Officials believe upgrading this into a world-class complex could attract up to 2,000 users daily. At Ravuthanahalli, the department owns 15 acres, and projections indicate similar footfall. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now With no comparable infrastructure nearby, the complexes are expected to serve not just city athletes but also draw talent from across the country. Officials also point to the rationale behind opting for the PPP model: "Since this project includes international standard sports infrastructure development, private sector entities with better knowledge about modern sports can execute it. Also, the department does not have the necessary funds to implement this project." Besides bridging the funding gap, the PPP model is expected to ensure cutting-edge technology and broader access to athletes and fitness enthusiasts. Revenue for the private partners may come from user charges, training and coaching fees, advertising, hospitality services, and healthcare and rehabilitation facilities.

Delhi Raises Stakes For Olympic Medals — Up To 7cr For Winners
New Delhi: Announcing two major initiatives to boost sports and education, Delhi govt on Tuesday increased the cash awards for Olympic and Paralympic medallists from the city and announced the approval of the Mukhyamantri Digital Scheme to provide free laptops to meritorious students. Minister Ashish Sood said the decisions "for Delhi's development, students and youth" were taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Rekha Gupta at Delhi Secretariat. "There were historic decisions made under the Mukhyamantri Khel Prothsahan Yojana. Earlier, Olympic and Paralympic medal winners were awarded Rs 3 crore, Rs 2 crore and Rs 1 crore for gold, silver and bronze medallists, respectively. To encourage the sports ecosystem in Delhi, Olympic gold medallists will now be given Rs 7 crore, silver medallists will receive Rs 5 crore, and bronze medallists Rs 3 crore," he said. The Cabinet also decided that young sportspersons participating in state- and national-level events will be provided Rs 5 lakh each for coaching and training purposes, he said. The honorarium will be given to students from classes 6 to 12. So far, National Games winners were provided Rs 3 lakh, Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh for winning gold, silver and bronze medals, Sood said. Govt has now decided to provide Rs 11 lakh for winning any medal in national-level sports events, he added. Govt will provide Rs 20 lakh per year to "elite sportspersons" who participate in national and international games and sports events, the minister said. Meanwhile, Sood said the move to provide students free laptops under the Mukhyamantri Digital Scheme was aimed to ensure their holistic development. "As many as 1,200 meritorious students who passed Class 10 with good marks will be given i7 laptops. This will benefit students from underprivileged backgrounds," he said, adding that this will be in line with the National Education Policy, and children from underprivileged backgrounds will benefit from the scheme. Sood also criticised the previous AAP dispensation over "non-functional" computer labs in govt schools. "There were some people who called themselves the fathers of the education revolution. There are 1,074 govt schools. I invite you to witness the education revolution there... None of them has a functional computer lab," he alleged, adding, "At a time when we are talking about experiential learning, AI and data science, our govt school students don't have functional computer labs or information and communication technology (ICT) labs. " Sood announced that Delhi govt will set up 100 ICT labs in state-run schools.
