NSE gets Sebi nod to launch electricity futures. 3 things exchange expects to achieve
NSE has received approval from the capital market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) to launch monthly electricity futures contracts. The move comes with a view to deepen India's power markets and support long-term structural reforms initiated under the Electricity Act, 2003.
ADVERTISEMENT In a press release issued on Wednesday, NSE called it a "significant milestone".
"India's journey toward achieving its net-zero emissions target demands substantial investment—estimated at over $250 billion year on year till 2047 as per Niti Aayog report. By 2030, renewable energy sources such as solar and wind are expected to contribute over 50% of the nation's installed power capacity. A robust and dynamic electricity derivatives market is essential to attract this scale of climate finance from both domestic and global investors," the release said.
Through the launch of monthly electricity futures, the NSE aims to achieve 3 things :1) Provide market participants with effective hedging tools against electricity price volatility.2) Enable more accurate price signals in the power sector.
ADVERTISEMENT 3) Encourage capital investments across the electricity value chain—generation, transmission, distribution, and retail.Commenting on the development, NSE MD & CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan said, "This approval is only the beginning of NSE's vision for a broader electricity derivatives ecosystem. Plans are underway to gradually introduce contracts for difference (CFDs) and other long-duration electricity derivatives such as quarterly and annual contracts subject to regulatory approvals.'
ADVERTISEMENT In his view, a calibrated and phased approach will ensure both market integrity and investor confidence and it is crucial for the spot and futures electricity markets to evolve in tandem to create a virtuous cycle of liquidity and stability.A financially settled futures market will allow participants to hedge their risks effectively while a robust day-ahead spot market will ensure reliable price discovery, Chauhan said.
ADVERTISEMENT Sebi nod to the NSE comes on the heels of an approval given to MCX to launch its own electricity derivatives.

'Trading Members of the Exchange are hereby informed that effective from Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the equity shares of Kalpataru Limited shall be listed and admitted to dealings on the Exchange in the list of 'B' Group of Securities,' a notice on the BSE said. Kalpataru shares will be a part of Special Pre-open Session (SPOS) on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, it added, and the shares will be available for trading from 10:00 AM. Ahead of Kalpataru share listing today, the trends in Kalpataru IPO grey market premium (GMP) today and analysts signal a muted listing. Here's what Kalpataru IPO GMP today and analysts predict about the listing price. Kalpataru shares are showing a muted trend in the unlisted market with a flat grey market premium (GMP). According to market experts, Kalpataru IPO GMP today has dropped to ₹ 2 per share. This indicates that Kalpataru shares are trading higher by ₹ 2 in the grey market than their issue price. Kalpataru IPO GMP today signals that the estimated listing price of Kalpataru shares would be ₹ 416 apiece, which is at a flat premium to the IPO price of ₹ 414 per share. Analysts also expect Kalpataru IPO listing to be muted or flat. 'Kalpataru Projects International is expected to list with marginal gains over its issue price. The company has a credible track record in the infrastructure and EPC space, with a diversified order book and international presence. However, concerns around execution timelines and sectoral headwinds may cap immediate enthusiasm on listing day. While the pricing seems reasonable and supported by long-term fundamentals, the upside at listing is likely to be modest,' said Mahesh M. Ojha, AVP Research & Business Development at Hensex Securities Pvt. Ltd. He suggests investors may consider booking partial gains on listing, while those with a longer-term outlook may choose to hold, especially if they have confidence in the company's capacity to monetize its order book efficiently. 'Kalpataru IPO saw a lukewarm response. There is no active grey market premium, which means Kalpataru stock may not see much gain when it lists. Although the company has recently improved its profits during the first nine months of FY25, investors are still concerned about its past losses, high levels of debt, and an expensive valuation,' said Gaurav Goel, Founder & Director at Fynocrat Technologies. The bidding for Kalpataru IPO commenced on Tuesday, June 24, and concluded on Thursday, June 26. The IPO allotment date was June 27, and Kalpataru IPO listing date is today, July 1, Tuesday. The equity shares of Kalpataru will be listed on both the stock exchanges, BSE and NSE. Kalpataru IPO received 2.26 times subscription in total. It got bids for 5.15 crore equity shares as against 2.28 crore shares on the offer, as per NSE data. The public issue was booked 1.29 times in the retail category, and 3.12 times in the Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs) category. The Non Institutional Investors (NII) segment was subscribed 1.31 times. ICICI Securities, JM Financial, Nomura Financial Advisory And Securities (India) Pvt Ltd are the book running lead managers, while MUFG Intime India (Link Intime) is the Kalpataru IPO registrar. Why 125+ CFOs have resigned in Q1. Hint: it's personal
Mumbai: More than 125 chief financial officers (CFOs) have exited listed companies in the first three months of FY26 — a sharp 25% jump from a year earlier — as per disclosures made to the BSE. Some of them walked out overnight, citing a cryptic phrase, 'personal reasons'. The sudden resignation last Monday of Mastek Ltd's CFO Raghavendra Jha, barely a month into the job, is the latest in a string of such departures. In a one-line email addressed to the company's chief executive, Jha said he was putting in his papers due to personal reasons, without providing any other detail. Such exits have cast doubts about corporate governance and regulatory compliance. When a listed company's key managerial personnel, including CFOs, resign, they are required to provide a detailed reason for their departure, as per the listing obligations and disclosure requirements of market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi). Experts said the KMPs are merely ticking the box in terms of complying with this requirement by citing vague reasons when resigning. 'The abrupt resignation of key managerial personnel, especially CFOs, often signals deeper issues within a company," said V. Balakrishnan, a former CFO at IT services major Infosys Ltd and founder of Exfinity Ventures, a venture capital fund. 'While regulators require disclosure of resignation reasons, the frequent use of vague terms like 'personal reasons' has become a convenient cover." Balakrishnan pointed out that in several instances, irregularities at companies have surfaced shortly after such exits. For example, Ankit Jain, the former CFO of Gensol Engineering, resigned in early March citing personal reasons and pursuit of other professional avenues as the reason for his departure. A month later, Sebi released its interim order against the company and its promoters, disclosing severe lapses in governance and diversion of funds. Similarly, IndusInd Bank's former CFO Gobind Jain's resignation this January was followed in March by the bank disclosing that it had financial discrepancies of over ₹2,000 crore in its derivatives portfolio. Jain had cited personal travel to the US and pursuit of other career opportunities as the reason for his exit. 'This raises serious concerns and strengthens the case for Sebi to broaden the disclosure mandate," said Balakrishnan. 'The onus must be on the board to reconcile these stated reasons with any financial lapses discovered later, and to be held accountable for any oversight or complicity." Currently, Ankit Jain is the CFO of SB-Constantia Flexibles, a joint venture between Constantia, an Austrian firm, and SB Packagings, a Delhi-based packaging firm. To be sure, in most cases when executives resign citing personal reasons, they end up joining a different firm. The pursuit of another career is the second most-cited reason for exits. However, experts say that the ambiguity created by this term allows even cases where there are serious issues at the firm to pass under the radar. Shriram Subramanian, a corporate governance expert and managing director of proxy advisory firm InGovern, said boards need to be cognizant that they are working in the interest of shareholders. 'If there is any other reason for the resignation like fraud or disciplinary action, they should disclose as much to the exchanges instead of letting it slide as 'personal reason'," he said. Meanwhile, Mumbai-headquartered IT services company Mastek, which ended FY25 with $408.4 million in revenue and is valued at $890 million, said there were no governance concerns behind CFO Jha's resignation in just over a month of joining. Jha did not respond toMint's messages requesting comment. 'We are not happy with having two CFOs in the last six months; it creates a wrong impression," said Ashank Desai, the company's chairman. Last December, Arun Agarwal had resigned as CFO after serving in the role for just over four years. 'Mastek stands for the highest corporate governance. I can vouch for it," said Desai, who co-founded the company in 1982.

Vadodara's green financing model: VMC launches book on successful bond issue
The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC), in partnership with Deloitte, launched 'The Green Book: On Climate Finance and Green Municipal Bonds' in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on the sidelines of a Security Exchange Board of India (SEBI) event, following the successful Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) listing of Municipal Green bonds in March 2024. Taking VMC's success as a case study and benchmark for other civic bodies eyeing the stock exchange for generating funds, the Green Book shares the efforts undertaken by the VMC in launching Asia's first and a pioneering green bond. 'The Green Book, compiled through a joint effort of VMC and Deloitte, is an attempt to document the success and achievement of the VMC along with details of the efforts that went into listing the Green bond that will inspire other urban local bodies to take similar steps… The process and rules of SEBI are also included in the book,' said VMC Chief Accountant Santosh Tiwari. Tiwari has also been instrumental in the previous successful listing of a five-year Rs 100 crore bond at the BSE on March 23, 2022, for 14 projects under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme and had received 36 bids on the BSE BOND platform for Rs 1,007 crore, which was 10 times the issue size. The success of the listing had also enabled the VMC to become eligible for an incentive of Rs 13 crore from the Central government. The BSE BOND platform is an electronic platform provided by the BSE for the private placement of debt securities. It facilitates online bidding for these securities, aiming to improve price discovery and transparency in the fundraising process. The Green bond was VMC's second market issue. On Monday, Vadodara Mayor Pinky Soni, Municipal Commissioner Arun Babu, Deputy Mayor Chirag Barot, Standing Committee Chairman Dr Sheetal Mistry and Chief Accountant Santosh Tiwari, remained present at the event where SEBI whole-time member Ashwini Bhatia as well as SEBI Executive Director Pramod Rao and Deloitte Executive Director Vivek Mittal released the book. Babu, who took over as the Municipal Commissioner of Vadodara earlier this year, said, 'The bond is an innovative mechanism for green financing in the urban sector. Vadodara is playing a pioneering role in green financing.' The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) in March 2024 had successfully raised Rs 100 crore from the Certified Green Municipal Bond for Sustainable Water Infrastructure, which opened for bidding on the Electronic Bidding Platform (EBP) of BSE. The VMC received 44 bids on the BSE BOND platform for Rs. 1,460 crore within a second of opening the bid. The VMC said that the funds received from the bonds would be deployed in three projects — a 100 Million Litres per Day (MLD) sewage treatment plant (STP) at Sherkhi, a 21 MLD STP and pumping station at Undera and building new auxiliary pumping station (APS), pressures lines and drainage network at Bil village, which will help in disposal of sewage water effectively. Standing Committee Chairman Dr Sheetal Mistry said, 'The VMC has set a regional precedent with the success of the Green bond, which is certified by the Climate Bond Initiative (CBI) as a first for India and Asia. The book will provide other urban local bodies to take inspiration and follow the path set by the VMC in raising funds for infrastructure projects without depending solely on Central government grants.' Aimed at fostering sustainable urban development aligned with the Paris Agreement, these bonds are dedicated to enhancing liquid waste water management infrastructure across Vadodara, according to the VMC statement.
