'A sad day for our city': Highway crash kills LA police sergeant
Sergeant Shiou Deng was killed in the crash, which took place at around 2 a.m. local time on the southbound side of the freeway, according to LAPD and California Highway Patrol officials.
He had stopped at the scene of a prior collision when he was struck by another passing vehicle, CHP logs show. Deng had just arrived and exited his patrol vehicle to help when he was hit and fatally injured.
CHP Assistant Chief Joe Zizi said a person was killed in the initial crash that Deng was responding to, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Further details of the collision were not available.
Who was Shiou Deng?
LAPD Sergeant Deng served the city of Los Angeles for more than 26 years with "honor, courage, and compassion," LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said "with profound sadness" in a written statement.
"He was a deeply respected leader within our department and a trusted protector of our communities. His loss is immeasurable, and the grief we feel is shared not only by the men and women of the LAPD, but by the entire law enforcement family and the residents he served so faithfully," McDonnell wrote.
The chief expressed condolences to Deng's family and friends and colleagues.
"We are doing everything in our power to support them, and we ask the public to hold them in your thoughts and prayers," McDonnell said. "As we mourn, we also honor Sergeant Deng's extraordinary legacy — a legacy defined by integrity, bravery, and an unwavering commitment to public service. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him, served with him, and were protected by him."
Mayor says Deng's 'last act was one of service'
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said it was "a sad day for our city" and ordered city flags to be lowered to half-staff in his honor.
"The men and women of LAPD put their lives on the line for Angelenos each and every day," she said via social media. "This morning, I met with officers at the hospital who described him as caring and selfless. His last act was one of service — putting the safety and wellbeing of others above all else."
Information regarding a memorial service was expected to be announced in the coming days.
Collision prompts temporary 405 Highway closure
Following the collision, CHP officials closed all southbound lanes near Moraga Drive shortly before 2:30 a.m. until further notice.
However, officers have now cleared the roadway and reopened all lanes, CHP confirmed on X at 12:18 p.m.
"Thank you to all drivers for staying safe on the road," CHP wrote on X.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis offers $10,000 reward for investigation into alleged attacks against a transgender woman
Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis is offering a $10,000 reward in the investigation of a transgender woman and small business owner who was beaten multiple times. Since the start of April, the Los Angeles Police Department has been investigating the alleged attacks as hate crimes against 61-year-old Sabrina De La Peña. The attacks have involved physical assaults, pepper spray, the use of weapons and verbal threats, police said. "This violent hate crime has no place in our neighborhoods," Solis said. "Now more than ever, we must reject hate and safeguard our most vulnerable communities, which include our transgender and LGBTQ+ Angelenos. I encourage anyone who may have information to please come forward." The series of attacks began on April 8 when a man entered De La Peña's shop and tried to flirt with her. Detectives said the man left the store after she denied his advances, but he returned shortly after and allegedly sexually assaulted De La Peña. Detectives also said that the man returned multiple times with more suspects and continued to beat her. According to police, on three separate instances, the group of men allegedly beat De La Peña with a skateboard, pepper-sprayed her and threw an unknown liquid on her. LAPD officers released four pictures of one of the suspects accused of beating a transgender woman on multiple occasions. KCAL News "They punched me. They kicked me. I tried to go outside, they pushed me inside," De La Pena said in an interview with CBS News Los Angeles. "I received more than 50 punches. After that, I started screaming, and when nobody was coming, I said OK and asked God why?" De La Peña claims she has been attacked six times since April. On May 27, detectives arrested 30-year-old Samuel Parros for assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the attacks against De La Peña. Police believe two other men joined the suspect during the alleged hate crimes against the 61-year-old transgender woman. LAPD The LAPD has released surveillance photos asking for the public's help in identifying two more suspects. Solis' reward will be given in exchange for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individuals responsible for the alleged attacks. Anyone who may have information regarding the incidents is asked to contact the LAPD Rampart Division Detectives at (213) 484-3495. 7-Eleven worker dies after allegedly being attacked by manager
7-Eleven spokesperson told a local TV station that the company was fully cooperating with the investigation and that the suspect was fired. A 7-Eleven employee in Los Angeles died after allegedly being attacked by her manager, who authorities are searching for, according to local police and the deceased worker's family. Jessica McLaughlin was found unconscious by Los Angeles police on June 24 after patrol officers received a radio call around 2:15 p.m. regarding a felony battery at the convenience store on Melrose Avenue, according to a department news release. McLaughlin, who police said was in her 20s, got into a verbal dispute with another woman inside the 7-Eleven that escalated into a physical altercation, the department stated. Once discovered by police, McLaughlin was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead on July 2. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office is in the process of determining McLaughlin's cause and manner of death, police said. 'This attack should have never happened' McLaughlin's brother, Sean McLaughlin, created a GoFundMe to cover the costs of his sister's funeral. "Jessica McLaughlin is my sister — but she's so much more than that. She's a daughter, a best friend, and the kind of auntie every kid dreams of having," Sean McLaughlin wrote on the GoFundMe page. "She's been my rock these past five years while we've lived together. She was always there — for me, for our family, and honestly, for anyone who needed her." Sean McLaughlin also described on the GoFundMe page what allegedly transpired on the day of his sister's death, accusing "one of her managers" of "violently and senselessly" attacking her on June 24. The brother alleges his sister's manager "held her down, sat on top of her and didn't let her breathe." "While some coworkers tried to help and stop it, they were attacked too. When she finally got free, she collapsed. She wasn't breathing," Sean McLaughlin wrote on the GoFundMe about his sister. As McLaughlin's coworkers gave her CPR and called for help, the manager "ran to the back room to try and delete the security footage — and then fled the scene on her bike," the brother wrote. Neither the LAPD nor McLaughlin's brother identified the manager allegedly involved in the incident. "This attack should have never happened," Sean McLaughlin wrote. More news: Father and son identified as campers found dead at Isle Royale National Park GoFundMe for Jessica McLaughlin nears $50,000 goal The GoFundMe created by McLaughlin's brother is nearing its $50,000 goal. As of July 3, it has received over $31,000 in donations. "We're trying to give her the goodbye she deserves," Sean McLaughlin wrote on the GoFundMe page. "We want to give her a beautiful service — something that honors who she was and how deeply she was loved." A 7-Eleven spokesperson told KTLA that the company was fully cooperating with the investigation and that the suspect has since been fired. USA TODAY contacted 7-Eleven and Sean McLaughlin on Thursday, July 3, but has not received a response. Jonathan Limehouse covers breaking and trending news for USA TODAY. Reach him at JLimehouse@
