'It's been one of those things that has been in the makings for a while,' Huskies head coach Brandin Cote said.

'The last couple of years, I've wanted to take a look at some of the different things we could do. I know other (U Sports) teams have done it. I know the U of S did it way back when, when Dave King was here, and that's kind of where the thought process came along from a long time ago.'

Cote said he spoke with King and other Huskie hockey alumni from that time period about how they enjoyed it.

'(King) felt that, at that point of time, it was a good way to bolster the program and thought it really helped them. That was the historical piece of it.'

UTE Budapest includes Saskatoon native Keegan Danserou, former Regina Pats forward/defenceman Dyson Stevenson, and former Melville Millionaire and Regina Cougars forward Ian McNulty.

HK Nitra has former University of Alberta Golden Bear defenceman Elias Carmichael and former Notre Dame Hound/Kamloops Blazer goalie Dylan Ferguson.

HK Spišská Nová Ves has former Saskatoon Blades defenceman Samuel Barcik as well as one-time and Blades draft pick and prospect Jonny Tychonick.

Cote noted the Huskies were considering new ways to bring more value to their program.

'I just felt this was a really good opportunity. It helped our recruiting for sure. We're getting three guys from pro hockey who want to continue to play pro hockey once they're done their degrees or whenever that may be; we have other guys on our roster who are more than capable and would like to do that, and experience something like that when they're done with our program.

'To be able to expose them to that and see what it's all about, to maybe get a little bit of exposure when they're over there and meet some people, it just felt like the right time to be able to pull the trigger and do it. It'll be exciting for us,' Cote said.

Jets owner Woody Johnson completes purchase of stake in Premier League club Crystal Palace
LONDON (AP) — Crystal Palace confirmed Thursday that New York Jets owner Woody Johnson's purchase of Eagle Football's shareholding in the Premier League club has been completed. 'I am honored and privileged to be joining the ownership group of Crystal Palace Football Club,' Johnson told the club website. Palace announced last month that Johnson had signed 'a legally binding contract' to buy the shares of fellow American John Textor, who had a 43% stake in the London club, with reports at the time placing the price between $220 million and $260 million. The latest club statement gave no financial details. Johnson joins chairman Steve Parish, Josh Harris and David Blitzer as a partner and director of the club, and has also signed the Premier League's Owners' Charter. 'It is an organization with a proud history, tradition, and deep roots in English football in South London, which I came to admire during my time as US Ambassador to the United Kingdom,' Johnson said. Palace finished 12th last season in the 20-team Premier League. Competition dispute Johnson's arrival at Palace comes with the club in dispute with UEFA over which European competition it will play in next season after winning the FA Cup in May — its first major trophy in 120 years of existence. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Palace was demoted from the Europa League to the Conference League after falling foul of UEFA's rules governing multi-club ownership, but has submitted an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. UEFA determined that as of March 1, Textor had control or influence in Palace and French club Lyon. Textor said he had agreed to sell his stake in Palace to Johnson, but the move came too late to satisfy UEFA. ___ AP soccer:

Arsenal completes signing of Spain U21 defender Cristhian Mosquera
LONDON (AP) — Cristhian Mosquera became Arsenal's fifth signing of the off season on Thursday after completing a move from Valencia. The Spain Under 21 defender cost a reported 13 million pounds ($17.5 million) and signed a five-year deal with the option of a further 12 months. 'We identified Cristhian as one of the strongest young defenders in European football, and he is an important signing for our future,' Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta said. Arsenal, which has finished runner-up in the Premier League for the last three seasons, has been active in the market this summer. The move for Mosquera comes after deals for midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard, forward Noni Madueke and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. The London club is also widely expected to sign a striker, with Viktor Gyokeres a reported target. The 21-year-old Mosquera was born in Spain and is also eligible to play for Colombia. He won gold at the Paris Olympics with Spain last year. 'He is a young player with exciting talent and enormous potential, who will fit well into our squad as we continue to prepare for next season,' manager Mikel Arteta said.
