India-EFTA Trade Deal to Come into Force from October 1: Piyush Goyal

The free trade agreement between India and the four-nation European bloc EFTA will be implemented from October 1, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Saturday.
India, on March 10, 2024, signed a trade pact with the four-nation bloc – the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) – which not only gives access to India's goods and services to that market but also opens possibilities of $100 billion in investments in the country over 15 years.
"India-EFTA TEPA to come into effect from 1st October," Goyal said in a post on X.
The EFTA trade pact, the negotiations for which began in 2008, includes 100% market access to Indian non-agricultural products and concessions on processed agricultural products (PAP), while keeping primary agricultural products out of the ambit of the pact.
EFTA will eliminate or reduce import tariffs on 99.6% of India's exports. India will eliminate or reduce import tariffs on 95.3% of the exports from EFTA nations. However, the effective duty on gold, which forms 80% of exports from EFTA countries, remains untouched at 15%.
The trade pact also has provisions for mutual recognition agreements in professional services like nursing, chartered accountants, and architects, among others. This should allow these professionals from India to have more opportunities in the four EFTA bloc countries.
On intellectual property rights, the two sides agreed to follow the high standards of the Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement. India's interests in generic medicines and concerns related to the evergreening of patents have been fully addressed.

India's 8 Core Industries Post 1.7% Growth In June

New Delhi: India's core industries comprising eight sectors reported 1.7 per cent growth in June 2025, down from 5 per cent in the same month of 2024, data released on Monday by Ministry of Commerce and Industry showed. On a month-on-month basis, the expansion in June is relatively up, when these key sectors grew by 1.2 per cent. Commerce ministry data showed the production of steel, cement and refinery products recorded positive growth in June 2025. The Index of Eight Core Industries (ICI) measures the combined and individual performance of production of eight core industries -- Coal, Crude Oil, Natural Gas, Refinery Products, Fertilizers, Steel, Cement and Electricity. The Eight Core Industries comprise 40.27 per cent of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP). The cumulative growth rate of ICI during April to June, 2025-26 is 1.3 per cent (provisional) as compared to the corresponding period of last year. The summary of the Index of Eight Core Industries is given below: Coal - Coal production (weight: 10.33 per cent) declined by 6.8 per cent in June, 2025 over June, 2024. Its cumulative index declined by 0.3 per cent during April to June, 2025-26 over corresponding period of the previous year. Crude Oil - Crude Oil production (weight: 8.98 per cent) declined by 1.2 per cent in June, 2025 over June, 2024. Its cumulative index declined by 2.0 per cent during April to June, 2025-26 over corresponding period of the previous year. Natural Gas - Natural Gas production (weight: 6.88 per cent) declined by 2.8 per cent in June, 2025 over June, 2024. Its cumulative index declined by 2.5 per cent during April to June, 2025-26 over corresponding period of the previous year. Petroleum Refinery Products - Petroleum Refinery production (weight: 28.04 per cent) increased by 3.4 per cent in June, 2025 over June, 2024. Its cumulative index remained constant during April to June, 2025-26 over corresponding period of the previous year. Fertilizers - Fertilizer production (weight: 2.63 per cent) declined by 1.2 per cent in June, 2025 over June, 2024. Its cumulative index declined by 3.8 per cent during April to June, 2025-26 over corresponding period of the previous year. Steel - Steel production (weight: 17.92 per cent) increased by 9.3 per cent in June, 2025 over June, 2024. Its cumulative index increased by 7.0 per cent during April to June, 2025-26 over corresponding period of the previous year. Cement - Cement production (weight: 5.37 per cent) increased by 9.2 per cent in June, 2025 over June, 2024. Its cumulative index increased by 8.4 per cent during April to June, 2025-26 over corresponding period of the previous year. Electricity - Electricity generation (weight: 19.85 per cent) declined by 2.8 per cent in June, 2025 over June, 2024. Its cumulative index declined by 2.0 per cent during April to June, 2025-26 over corresponding period of the previous year. "Although the year-on-year (YoY) growth in core output improved slightly to 1.7 per cent in June 2025 from 1.2 per cent in May 2025, it remained decidedly tepid, with as many as five of the eight sectors recording a contraction in their output in the month," said Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist, ICRA Ltd. "While an elevated base weighed upon coal output, excess rains in the latter half of June 2025 impacted electricity generation." "Encouragingly, the output of the cement and steel sectors rose by a robust 9.2-9.3 per cent in June 2025, although this was supported by a favourable base in the case of the former. The growth in volumes of these segments has been quite healthy in Q1 FY2026, which implies that the construction sector is poised to record a robust GVA growth in the quarter. Given the subdued growth in core output, ICRA expects the IIP growth to print at 1.5-2.5 per cent in June 2025," added Nayar. Release of the index for July, 2025 will be on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

ED summons Meta, Google on July 28 for ads on betting sites

Representational Image NEW DELHI: Meta and Google, being investigated by ED for hosting advertisements on their platforms for illegal betting sites, have been given a fresh date of July 28 to appear before the probe agency, after they sought adjournment of the summons issued for Monday. Sources said the tech companies sought more time to collect documents sought by the agency in their ongoing probe against some illegal betting sites operating in India. These betting sites have collected hundreds of crores from Indian citizens by engaging in illegal activity. ED in a statement in Jan this year had said that scammers have been posting ads on platforms like Google, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, offering betting options, part-time jobs, online shopping and jobs, among others. Victims register through a link provided to them and pay a small initial amount, like Rs 100. The scammers then ask for more deposits, promising higher payouts. "However, when victims attempt to withdraw their earnings, they are told to complete more tasks and pay additional fees. This cycle continues until victims deposit large sums, often in lakhs, only to realise they have been scammed." In online shopping fraud, scammers attract people with "offers of very cheap products found via Google or social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like AirSense 11 – Smart tech for deep sleep ResMed Buy Now Undo Victims receive a purchase link on WhatsApp, register, and pay for the item. The fraudsters then demand additional payments, citing reasons such as customs duties and delivery charges. In the end, the victim loses their money and never receives the purchased item. " Earlier, ED had attached assets worth Rs 337 crore in a crackdown against illegal betting related to Lok Sabha results of 2024 and unauthorised broadcast of IPL cricket matches. "The attached assets included demat account holdings, lands, flats and commercial warehouses located at Ajmer (Rajasthan), Kutch (Gujarat), Daman, Thane and Mumbai (Maharashtra) worth Rs 220 crore of the online betting app Fairplay and its promoters," the agency had said. This was in addition to assets worth Rs 117 crore attached earlier. The funds laundered through shell companies have been siphoned off to overseas shell entities based out of Hong Kong SAR, China and Dubai. "More than 400 bank accounts of shell entities were found to be used for these purposes, which are under examination along with trailing/utilisation of funds collected from the public by Fairplay," ED had said.

300kmph, radar-proof: Army buys BITS-Hyd students' hostel-built drones

Hyderabad: Bomb-dropping Kamikaze drones — 300kmph, radar-proof. Assembled inside a hostel room of BITS Pilani's Hyderabad campus. The Army buys in. Two 20-year-old engineering students of the institute have stunned India's defence circles by building and selling cutting-edge UAVs to Army units across Jammu, Haryana's Chandimandir, Bengal's Panagarh, and Arunachal Pradesh — all within two months of launching their start-up Apollyon Dynamics. Their mission: reduce India's dependency on imported drones. Jayant Khatri, a mechanical engineering student from Rajasthan's Ajmer, and electrical engineering student Sourya Choudhury from Kolkata built their drones with off-the-shelf parts, customised the systems for Indian terrain, and pitched them to Army officers via cold messages on LinkedIn. What followed was a whirlwind — a live demo of bomb-dropping and racing drones, followed by more demonstrations to military regiments. Orders began flowing in. The company was born. Their standout product: a Kamikaze drone that hits speeds over 300kmph, five times faster than standard commercial UAVs, and delivers 1kg payloads with pinpoint accuracy. "Our drones are not just fast — they can't be detected on radar," said Choudhury. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do you have a mouse? We started with a defence-tech club on campus. Then came the orders — that's when we knew we had to go big," Choudhury said. The team now includes six second-year students and is working on next-generation VTOL (Vertical Take-off and Landing)) and fixed-wing platforms to boost mission flexibility. They also offer hands-on training to military personnel — even those with no prior flight experience. "It's heartening to see what they've achieved," said professor Sanket Goel of BITS Pilani. "Their start-up has already secured multiple orders from the armed forces." In "3 Idiots", Joy Lobo's passion for machines died in silence — no support, no takers. In real life, two students built war-ready drones in a hostel room. The Army called back.
