Inzaghi hails ‘extraordinary' Al Hilal after City upset

ORLANDO: Al Hilal's Italian coach Simone Inzaghi hailed his 'extraordinary' team after Monday's stunning 4-3, extra-time win over Premier League giants Manchester City at the Club World Cup.
'We knew had to do something extraordinary if we were to beat Manchester City and that is what the boys did tonight, the lads were simply wonderful,' said Inzaghi after the shock of the tournament in Orlando.
'We had to be extraordinary because well, Manchester City, we all know that team. So we had to climb Everest without oxygen to win the game and we made it.
'We were great. All the players were exceptional in everything, in the possession phase, non-possession phase,' added the former Inter Milan coach whose previous club were defeated by Fluminense just hours before the kick-off at Camping World Stadium.
'It is only right in this moment, this evening, to enjoy this achievement up against the Manchester City of Guardiola. The heart that they put in tonight…..' he said.
Inzaghi had only been in charge of the team for a few days before the opening game where his side drew with Real Madrid and said the credit for the performance belongs with the players.
'It is barely three weeks that we are together and you can see the level of application, they really put the effort in. As a coach clearly that is very satisfying.
'The lads delivered that performance, they have reached the quarter-finals,' he said.
City won all three of their group stage games and after a 5-2 win over Juventus in their last game before the knockout stage they were viewed as one of the favourites for the title.

City boss Pep Guardiola gave credit to Al Hilal but clearly hadn't seen such an outcome on the horizon.
'It is a pity, we have been on an incredible journey together and so good place. The vibe was really good, I cannot thank Manchester City enough and especially the players for training and how they have been playing,' he said.
'We would have loved to have continued, you can only be here once every four years, we had a feeling that the team is doing well but we go home and now it is time to rest and rest our minds for the new season,' he said.
The Spaniard praised the way Inzaghi's team had hurt them on the counter-attack.
'We were so open. When the crosses arrived, in the first action, they had the ability to pass the ball and attack and they have quick players. We created a lot and had a lot of chances against a team that defend so deep.
They punished us on the transitions,' he said.

Plenty of time for Bellingham brothers clash, says Kovac after Jobe's CWC suspension

ATLANTA: Jobe Bellingham may want to steer clear of tackling when the clock ticks over to the 28th minute of his next match. The midfielder was on track to face his brother Jude of Real Madrid in the Club World Cup quarter-finals but after picking up a yellow card in Borussia Dortmund's 2-1 win over Monterrey on Tuesday he will instead be looking on from the sidelines. That booking, for a foul on Nelson Deossa, was his second of the tournament and arrived in the 28th minute at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The 19-year-old's first yellow card came in Dortmund's 1-0 group stage win over South Korean side Ulsan HD – also in the 28th minute. 'I think we all saw that he was very disappointed,' Dortmund manager Niko Kovac said. 'I think he did not exactly know that the second yellow card is a suspension at halftime. He was a little bit surprised.' While one door has closed, Kovac said there will be more opportunities for the siblings to face each other. 'Okay, he's young. His brother is also young, so I'm convinced they will face each other, maybe next season in the Champions League, and then the future. The future is for them. 'And yeah, the Club World Cup would be nice, but now it isn't. Someone else must play for him, but it's also okay.' Real Madrid oust Juventus as Dortmund reach Club World Cup quarters Jobe, who sealed a 33 million euros ($38.92 million) move to Dortmund from newly-promoted Premier League club Sunderland in June, was substituted in the 55th minute to avoid any chance of a red card, said Kovac. 'I substituted him not because of his performance. I changed because he had a yellow card in this game, and you saw we had some very intensive duels, and I did not want that someone is maybe then booked twice,' Kovac added. Jude, 22, also played for Dortmund from 2020-2023 before making the switch to the Santiago Bernabeu. Dortmund play Real at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Saturday.

Real Madrid oust Juventus as Dortmund reach Club World Cup quarters

ATLANTA: Spanish giants Real Madrid beat Juventus 1-0 on Tuesday to set up a Club World Cup quarter-final clash against Borussia Dortmund, who edged Mexican side Monterrey. Serhou Guirassy struck twice for the German outfit as they scraped past Sergio Ramos's side 2-1 in a tight last-16 clash in Atlanta and denied the former Real Madrid skipper a match-up against his former team. Youngster Gonzalo Garcia headed home his third goal of the tournament to help Madrid edge Italian side Juventus at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami earlier. It was an impressive display from Xabi Alonso's Madrid side, unbeaten under the new coach, and they were further boosted by Kylian Mbappe's return from illness as a substitute. 'We had a lot of chances in the second half, but their goalkeeper was really good,' said Madrid shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois. The first half was a finely-balanced contest with Igor Tudor's Juventus starting brightly before Real ended it on top. Los Blancos kept turning the screw and found their goal when Trent Alexander-Arnold crossed for Gonzalo to head home after 54 minutes. Alonso decided to introduce Mbappe to the delight of the 62,149 crowd but the striker did not find any clear openings as Juve pushed for an equaliser. Madrid's coach was pleased with his team's performance, including that of Gonzalo – who he had compared to former Real great Raul – but also suggested that Mbappe might be ready for a bigger contribution in the next game. 'We will keep watching him… I think he will be much better for the quarters,' Alonso said. Alonso added that he was satisfied to see Real produce the necessary grit to grind out the result in the second half. 'We had to be patient, we had to mature into the game,' said the coach. 'With the players and myself, you know you have to grit your teeth and do what you have to do. And in the end, we had to hold on a bit, and I'm happy about that too.' Juve boss Tudor said his team became exhausted as the game developed. Saudi's Al Hilal knock Man City out of Club World Cup in huge shock 'In the end there were 10 of them asking to be substituted. Obviously you can't do that but there was an incredible tiredness,' he said, offering his reasons. 'There is the tension of the game which burns energy but then there is the heat and humidity,' explained Tudor, also noting they were at the end of a long season. Dortmund deny Ramos In Atlanta, Guirassy's brace was enough to help Dortmund past Monterrey in a hard-fought clash, setting them up to play a Madrid side who beat them in the 2024 Champions League final. 'Real has a great team, they have many good individual players,' Dortmund coach Niko Kovac told reporters. 'If we put everything on the pitch, (giving) the same performance as we saw today, I think that we will have a good chance.' Guirassy netted a first-half double but German Berterame pulled one back for the Mexican side who came close to an equaliser when a late Ramos header span just wide. After grinding through several games in the blazing afternoon sun during the group stage, Dortmund were grateful to be at the air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz Stadium and played at a faster pace in Atlanta. Karim Adeyemi set up both of Guirassy's goals as the Guinea international reached 37 for the season across all competitions. A booking for Jobe Bellingham means he will be suspended for the clash against his brother Jude's Real Madrid side. However Dortmund almost missed out entirely as Monterrey hit back in the second half, but after Berterame headed home to reduce the gap, goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made several good saves to keep them at bay. Ramos, sent up front for the final stages, put a header agonisingly wide in stoppage time as he tried to deliver on his penchant for late, decisive moments, like in Madrid's 2014 Champions League final triumph. 'The crowd and our fans and the people who understand about football, they saw that the team gave everything,' Ramos told DAZN, proud of his side's efforts.

There is growing confidence across all parties that an agreement will be reached. Veteran transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed Inter Miami's position. Romano also suggested the Argentina captain is open to continuing his American chapter, despite reports linking him to a potential move to Saudi Arabia. 🚨🇺🇸 EXCL: Inter Miami club sources' position on Leo Messi's future. Messi, who arrived in Florida in 2023, has become the club's all-time leading scorer with 50 goals. His most recent came from a trademark free-kick during the Club World Cup against FC Porto. Should he agree to terms, Messi is expected to see out his playing days in the US, with speculation mounting that he could also retire from international football after Argentina's title defence at the 2026 World Cup. Messi's continued presence would be a significant asset to Major League Soccer, which has seen a notable rise in global interest and commercial appeal since his arrival.
