US natgas prices slide on mild weather, lower demand

Business Recorder16 hours ago
NEW YORK: US natural gas futures fell more than 6% on Monday, pressured by mild weather that kept heating and cooling demand subdued, allowing for larger-than-usual storage injections.
The front-month gas futures for August delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) were down 25.3 cents, or 6.8% to $3.49 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) by 10:04 a.m. ET (1404 GMT).
The decline marked a weak end to the second quarter, with prices dropping nearly 15% over the three-month period, snapping four straight quarters of gains and marking the worst performance since January 2024.
'The weather has moderated from that heat we just had, the prices are easing off a little bit,' said Thomas Saal, senior vice president for energy at StoneX Financial.
'The market (had initially) shown quite a resilience to additional production or additional supply going into storage. So the storage injections have been rather hefty and so that has kind of revealed that the market is well supplied and that has been weighing on prices.' Peak demand will likely come in July or August as broader heat sets in, Saal said, adding that while there had been some hot weather, it hadn't yet covered most major gas-consuming regions, so the real test is still ahead.
Financial firm LSEG said average gas output in the Lower 48 US states rose to 105.9 billion cubic feet per day so far in June, up from 105.2 bcfd in May, but still below the monthly record high of 106.3 bcfd in March due primarily to normal spring pipeline maintenance earlier in the month.
LSEG estimated 199 total degree days (TDDs) over the next two weeks, compared with 234 estimated on Friday. It also forecast average gas demand in the Lower 48, including exports, dipping slightly to 105 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) next week from 105.4 bcfd in the current week. The normal for this time of year is 170 TDDs. Total degree days measure the number of degrees a day's average temperature is above or below 65 degrees Fahrenheit (18 degrees Celsius) to estimate demand to cool or heat homes and businesses.
The average amount of gas flowing to the eight big US LNG export plants fell to 14.3 bcfd so far in June, down from 15.0 bcfd in May and a monthly record high of 16.0 bcfd in April.
Despite being the world's top natural gas producer and LNG exporter, many consumers in the US Northeast remain cut off from gas access due to limited pipeline infrastructure, relying instead on heating oil in their homes and businesses.

Bessent says US trade deal with India is very close

The U.S. and India are nearing a deal to lower tariffs on American imports to the South Asian country and to help India avoid levies imposed by the Trump administration rising sharply next week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Tuesday. 'We are very close with India,' Bessent told Fox News in response to a question about progress on trade negotiations. Indian officials extended a visit to Washington last week through Monday to try to reach agreement on a trade deal with President Donald Trump's administration and address lingering concerns on both sides, Indian government sources told Reuters. India is one of more than a dozen countries actively negotiating with the Trump administration to try to avoid a steep spike in tariff rates on July 9, when a 90-day tariff pause ends. India could see its new 'reciprocal' tariff rate rise to 27% from the current 10%. The U.S.-India talks have hit roadblocks over disagreements on import duties for auto components, steel, and farm goods, ahead of Trump's deadline to impose reciprocal tariffs. India to finalise interim trade deal with US as early as this week, FT reports 'We are in the middle – hopefully more than the middle – of a very intricate trade negotiation,' Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told an event in New York on Monday. 'Obviously, my hope would be that we bring it to a successful conclusion. I cannot guarantee it, because there's another party to that discussion,' said Jaishankar, who is in the a meeting of the China-focused Quad grouping. He added that there 'will have to be give and take' and the two sides will have to find middle ground. Bessent told Fox News that different countries have different agendas for trade deals, including Japan, which Trump complained about on Monday. But Bessent added that career trade negotiators are impressed with the offers that countries are making to the U.S. 'People who have been at Treasury, at Commerce, at USTR for 20 years, are saying that these are deals that they have never seen before,' Bessent said. So far, only Britain has negotiated a limited trade deal with the Trump administration, accepting a 10% U.S. tariff on many goods, including autos, in exchange for special access for aircraft engines and British beef.

Wheat up 2-4 cents, corn down 5-7, soy down 8-10

CHICAGO: The following are U.S. expectations for the resumption of grain and soy complex trading at the Chicago Board of Trade at 8:30 a.m. CDT (1330 GMT) on Tuesday. Wheat - Up 2 to 4 cents per bushel CBOT wheat ticked up, with fresh weakness in the dollar helping underpin prices in the face of an advancing harvest in the United States and elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere. The U.S. winter wheat harvest accelerated to 37% complete, up from 19% last week and above a range of analyst expectations, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported on Monday. CBOT September soft red winter wheat was last up 4-3/4 cents to $5.43 per bushel. K.C. September hard red winter wheat was last up 1-1/2 cents to $5.28-1/4 per bushel, and Minneapolis September spring wheat was last down ¾ cent to $6.19 per bushel. Wheat, corn down 3-4 cents, soybeans up 2-4 Corn - Down 5 to 7 cents per bushel CBOT corn fell as an unexpected jump in U.S. crop ratings reinforced expectations of ample supply. The USDA rated 73% of the nation's corn crop in good-to-excellent condition, above the average trade guess and the best since 2018 at this point in the growing season. Warm weather and showers across the U.S. Midwest have provided ideal growing conditions for the nation's corn and soybean crops over the past week, according to analysts. Favorable U.S. crop prospects come as Brazilian farmers are harvesting what some analysts expect to be a record second-corn crop. CBOT December corn was down 6-3/4 cents to $4.02-1/2 per bushel. Soybeans - Down 8 to 10 cents per bushel CBOT soybeans eased as steady U.S. crop conditions along with a higher-than-anticipated quarterly estimate of U.S. stocks also maintained supply pressure. The USDA in its quarterly stocks and acreage report pegged U.S. June 1 stockpiles of soybeans above average analyst expectations, though traders did not see significant changes. The USDA rated 66% of the nation's soybean crop in good-to-excellent condition, unchanged from the previous week and in line with expectations. CBOT November soybeans were last down 9-3/4 cents to $10.17-1/4 per bushel.

Standard Chartered Bank faces $2.7bn lawsuit over alleged role in 1MDB fraud

KUALA LUMPUR: Liquidators trying to recover money from Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund 1MDB have sued Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore, alleging it enabled fraud that led to more than $2.7 billion in financial losses more than 10 years ago. Standard Chartered on Tuesday said that it emphatically rejected the claims. The move is the latest in a wide-ranging effort to recover money belonging to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), from which U.S. investigators say about $4.5 billion was stolen between 2009 and 2014 in a complex, globe-spanning scheme. Shares in Standard Chartered fell on Tuesday and were down 2.7% by 1110 GMT, against a 0.3% drop in London's FTSE 100. Malaysian authorities have previously said there were billions of dollars more that were unaccounted for. Liquidators from financial services firm Kroll, which filed the lawsuit in the High Court of Singapore, said in a statement on Monday they were seeking to hold Standard Chartered accountable for its role in allegedly enabling fraud to be committed against 1MDB. Three companies in liquidation linked to 1MDB say Standard Chartered permitted over 100 intrabank transfers between 2009 and 2013 that helped conceal the flow of stolen funds. Standard Chartered, Emirates ink MoU They also allege the bank chose to overlook obvious red flags in relation to the transfer of funds, resulting in the losses, the liquidators said. 'According to this lawsuit, the transfers demonstrate serious breaches and control failings which ultimately enabled the theft of public funds by people operating at the highest levels of the Malaysian government during that period,' the liquidators said. Standard Chartered said it had not yet received the legal filing documents. 'Any claims by these companies are without merit and Standard Chartered will vigorously defend any lawsuit commenced by the liquidators,' Standard Chartered said in a statement to Reuters. It added the liquidators had earlier publicly stated the firms involved were shell companies with no legitimate business and were linked to alleged 1MDB mastermind and fugitive Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low. Low has consistently denied wrongdoing. The liquidators said the funds that flowed through the Standard Chartered accounts included transfers to the personal bank account of former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is serving a six-year prison sentence after being convicted of graft linked to 1MDB. The fund transfers also involved business payments and purchases of jewellery and luxury goods for Najib's wife and stepson, the liquidators said. Najib and his family members have consistently denied wrongdoing. The Board of 1MDB welcomed the move by the court-appointed liquidators. 'The Malaysian people were the true victims of this global fraud, and all parties are determined to hold every facilitator to account - including financial institutions that failed in their most basic duties of vigilance and responsibility,' a spokesperson for the board said. At least six countries, including Singapore and Switzerland, have launched investigations into 1MDB dealings in a global probe that has implicated banking and high-ranking officials worldwide, including Najib and executives from U.S. bank Goldman Sachs. Malaysia said last year it had recovered a total of 29 billion ringgit ($6.92 billion) in 1MDB assets between 2019 and February 2024. In 2016, Singapore's central bank imposed penalties of S$5.2 million on the local unit of Standard Chartered for money laundering breaches related to the 1MDB scandal. The Monetary Authority of Singapore said its investigations into Standard Chartered revealed 'significant lapses in the bank's customer due diligence measures and controls for ongoing monitoring' but did not find 'willful misconduct'. News of the lawsuit on Tuesday weakened Standard Chartered's share price. 'While it's tough to gauge the lawsuit's outcome, the potential hit - about 7% of market cap – is likely enough to weigh on shares in the short term,' said Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown. Standard Chartered is facing a separate $1.9 billion lawsuit in London over allegations the lender broke U.S. sanctions against Iran in a more widespread way than it has previously admitted.
